Four local congregations

The theme of his message was
the present day departure from
Biblical Christianity and the
Biblical way in which one
becomes a Christian, He pointed
out, the Gale tion people heard the
message of the cross that
salvation was the Grace of God
alone. They had appropriated the
message' and thus become
Christians but false teachers
entered afterwards and en-
deavored to lead the new
Christians into legalism and
ritualism thus perverting the
gospel of the grace of God.
Rev. Savage pointed out. from
his text this was a departure
from the Lord and therefore a
serious matter.
There was a good attendance
and special music was provided
from Glenn Cairn Baptist
Church, London.
Lawrence Mordeau of Brant-
ford was best man while George

Other special services
Exeter United Church and
Emmanuel Baptist Church also
held special services Sunday.
At the United Church it was
Mission and Service day and Rev,
Walton H Tonge, of the Board of
World Mission, Toronto, was the
guest speaker.
He told the congregation too
many people were wringing their
hands over the present and
talking only of how good it used to
be. He said they should be
pleased their mission con-
tribution was going so far and
doing so much,
Rev. Tonge said that during his
11 years in Hong Kong, in every
major disaster, the first relief
received was from the church in
Canada.
In Hong Kong the best schools
are those operated by the
Christian church, Because of the
quality of work done among
African nations, the Canadian
government under Canadian
International Development
Association has offered to finance
up to 50 percent of the relief and
development projects taken on by
the church.
This past year, said Rev.
Tonge, more United Church
Young People than ever before
have applied to work overseas
under the Board of World
Mission. Rev. Tonge at present is
in charge of recruiting overseas
personnel for theUnitedChurch of
Canada,

Two of the community's oldest
congregations, Caven
Presbyterian and St. Peter's
Roman Catholic celebrated
anniversaries, Sunday.
At Caven, commemorating 110
years of the founding of that
congregation, Rev. G.J. Mac-
Willie, M.A., Ph. D. was the guest
speaker.
His sermon topic was "The
Makers of Meaning" and he
stated that of all the species of the
world man was the only one that
asked, "How come?" and who
was able to make meaning in his
life,
He pointed out that man has to
make the choice of what kind of
meaning he brings into his life,
from the practical aspects to his
spiritual outlook. He said the
example of Jesus Christ shows
the answer to the final reality of
meaning in men's lives,
Rev. MacWillie spent several
years in the ministry of the
Presbyterian Church before
becoming a professor' of
psychology at Kings College,
University of Western Ontario.
St. Peter's Roman Catholic
Church was filled as former
members returned to celebrate
with present parishioners the
100th year of the opening of their
church building. The
congregation was formed about
Celebrating the centennial
mass was a former mative.
Father Raphael Glavin, whose
ancestors were among the first to
settle in the community.
He spoke of the gift of faith that
ancestors brought with them
from the old country and said it
was this faith that was respon-
sible for St. Peter's church, the
cemetery and little school that no
longer exists.
Father Glavin made reference
to the physical sacrifices that all
pioneers made to get the
country opened up and started.
He also noted the sacrifices made
by the travelling priests who
attended the little clusters of
Roman Catholic pioneers.
The speaker turned his at-
tention to the new Canadians who
are now part of the community.
He pointed out that they, too,
have come through difficulties to
start a new life and commended
them for the sacrifices they made
and for blending into the new
world.
He said he was thankful for the
