Euchre was played with Mrs. Mary McCarty winning ladies' high; Mrs. Mary Hodgson, ladies low and Mrs. William Luther, the most lone hands. Men's high was won my Mrs. ' Wm, Little (playing mens card) men's low, by, Mrs. Wm. Froats(playing mans cards) and lone hand by Fred Mcllhargey, Birthdays were celebrated by Mrs. Rose Atkinson and Mrs. Harry Bond Sr. Lunch was provided by Mrs. Charles Windsor and Mrs. Norma Coleman, Next week's lunchcommittee is Mrs. M. Hodgson and Mrs. T. Hodgins and the new executive will be in charge. Former resident dies in Guelph Marian Ellen Clancy, age 54 daughter of the late Cecil Simp- son, formerly of Lucan and Clandeboye, passed away in St. Joseph's Hospital, Guelph, October 29, She is survived by sons, Brendon of Guelph, Frank and Andy of Galt and two sisters, Mrs. Nancy Rogers of London and Mrs. Carl (Patricia) Speichts Digby, Nova Scotia. Mrs. Clancy was an artist and spent several years in Ireland, returning to Galt after the death of her husband. Service was from the Murdy Funeral Home, Tuesday with interment in St. James' Cemetery, Clandeboye. Rev. Vincent Trimmer officiated. Thinner motto for Institute The October meeting of McGillivray Women's Institute was held at the home of Mrs. Effie Harrison and was opened by singing Institute Ode followed by repeating the Mary Stewart Collect. After a short business meeting the roll call was answered by "Dont's in the uses of drugs." The program was conducted by the convener, Mrs. John Dyke, and Mrs. Joe Carey gave the motto "If you wish to get thinner diminish your dinner." A reading was given by Mrs. Dyke. Lunch was served by Mrs. Parry Thompson, Mrs. Joe Carey and Mrs. Dyke. A penny sale concluded the evening, A memorial service will be held at the cenotaph at Lieury November 7, at 2:15 Early shopping for Christmas Do you like to do your Christmas shopping early? If so, November 9, the Lucan- Clandeboye C.G.I.T. are spon- soring a 'Lingerie Party' in the church school room in the evening. It will take the form of a Shopper's Mart and shoppers will be able to choose lovely, inex- pensive lingerie for daughters and friends. Tea will be served in the Christian Education Wing for which a silver collection will be taken. The proceeds will go towards gifts for the shut-ins. WI to get Ontario story The Lucan Women's Institute met at the home of Mrs. W.C. Tupling and opened with the Institute Ode and Mary Stewart collect. The motto "every effort we make for the happiness of others, lifts us above ourselves" was given by Mrs. F. Joliffe, Mrs. H. Snelgrove, vice pr- sident, presided for business. Fifteen answered the roll call with a shower of stamped cards for shut ins. The Ontario Womeris Institute Story, will be purchased for the library, and centennial pictures for the community historical record book, will be discussed at November meeting. Following a poem read by Mrs. B. Smith an interesting talk on her trip to Spain and Morocco was given by Mrs. Cecil Robb. The mystery prize was won by Mrs. Sheridan Revington and a social half hour brought the meeting to a close. Explorers show films Two UNICEF filmstrips, "Children of the Cities and Children of the Developing Countries", were shown to the pupils of Biddulph School by the Explorer leader, Mrs. Wm. Froa is . After school the Lucan- Clandeboye Explorers met at the United Church for lunch, songs and roll call. Blue Star girls had perfect attendance. Twenty-six girls went out collecting for UNICEF. Gold Star girls returned to the church to work on African scrapbooks. Next expedition is November 15. House league starts Lucan hockey teams got un- derway for the winter season by playing their firstgame:S" Friday night. Pee-wees played Dorchester to a 6-3 loss for Lucan. Bantams won 2-1 over Dorchester and the Midgets lost 6-0 to the same town. Saturday morning at 8 o'clock the Lucan Lions House League begins with the Bantams playing at 8 a.m. the Pee-wees at 11 a.m. Anyone wishing to register can still do so and if further in- formation is needed see Gary Manders of Granton. The Lambeth Pee Wee, Ban- tams and Midgets are coming to Lucan Friday night. Shower staged for new bride October 26, Mrs. Evan But- chart was hostess for a shower honoring Mrs. L, Lavier (Nee - Lori Crudge) Twenty-five ladies enjoyed an evening of interesting contests and charades. The bride was assisted in opening her gifts by the hostess' little daughter, Tayna, and Allifon Burt. Lunch was served by Mrs. Butchart assisted by Lynda Scott, and Judy Bond. Special guests were the mother of the bride, Mrs. Pat Crudge; grandmother, Mrs. Mabel Ryan and Mrs. Lavier of Exeter, the groom's mother, First skater: Did anybody laugh when you fell on the ice? Heslop, R.N. , Township Rim dies' suddenly John Douglas Long, 75, of Ilderton passed away suddenly in London Township October 28, 1971, Mr. Long was a retired farmer and worked for a number of years for the Ilderton Co-Op. He is survived by his wife Emma Cunningham Long of Strathmere Lodge and one sister Mrs. Alma Crawford of Lobo Township. The pall bearers were George, Keith, John and Glenn Crawford, nephews of Mr. Long, Arnold Paisley and Carlisle Henderson. Funeral was from Murdy Funeral Home, Saturday with interment in St, George's Cemetery, London Township, Rev. G. C. Johnson officiated. Church News Lucan United Church Sunday morning service of the Lucan United Church was con- ducted by Rev. W.C. Tupling, Robert Blackwell was at the organ, Mr. Tupling's sermon topic was "A new person in a new world". He reminded the congregation it was Reformation Sunday and said this day we remember our heritage as Protestant Christians, and seek ways to apply our faith to the modern world. From November 1 to 14 over C.F.P.L. or C.K.S.L. a series of minute spots announcement of United Church Thank-You campaign will be heard. The bale deadline is November 14. The couples club The Lucan United Church Couples Club met Thursday night at the church with Dr. Green of Thorndale as guest speaker. Dr. Green showed slides and spoke on the work at E.L.W.A. Hospital,Liberia, Africa which he had visited recently. Mr. & Mrs. Wm. Froats, Mr. & Mrs. Ernie Ross and Mr. & Mrs. W. Lockyer were in charge of the worship service and also served lunch. Next meeting will he December 9. Pentecostal services Lucan Pentecostal Holiness Church are presenting a gospel song in the Lucan Public School Saturday. The Embers Trio, Akron, Ohio, and the Singing Sisters of Chatham, will be guest singers. Rev. Harry Nunn of Toronto will be taking both the morning service and evening service at Pentecostal Holiness Church next Sunday. He is the General superintendent of the Pentecostal Holiness Churches of Canada. Holy Trinity Anglican Church The annual hot turkey supper held last Wednesday was again a tremendous success with over 650 people being served by the ladies of the Holy Trinity Church. Mrs. Gordon Atkinson the president of the evening A.C.W. with her committee was responsible for the supper. Thursday evening the junior choir enjoyed a Halloween party and supper at the church hall. About 34 choir members and guests were present. During the past month 12 members have had perfect at- tendance, eight have missed once, and seven have missed twice. The average attandance for the month is 27, The junior choir mother is Mrs. Calvin Haskett. Sunday afternoon the Sunday School held their Halloween party. PHONE 238-2481 GRAND BEND By SID DALEY Comrades, I cannot stress enough the apparent indifferent attitude of veterans and civilians alike toward Remembrance Day. To some it is just another day, To others a day away from work, Others feel Remembrance Day should be 'Celebrated' on the closest Monday so they can 'enjoy' a long week-end. If positions were reversed, I'm sure we could depend on 'Them' to Remember, 'They' would be happy to. Comrades, the freedom we enjoy came at great cost, the lives of our Fallen, let us not forget the Solemn Obligation we assumed when becoming a member of our Great Organization. I charge you with it, Comrades and urge you to set all aside and muster with us at the Anglican Church, Lucan on Sunday, ,November 7 at 10.45 a.m. for our annual church parade - Following which we will meet at our Cenotaph for our Act of Remembrance. Our comrades of Ilderton will host the Remembrance banquet this year at 7.30 p.m. November 11 at the Ilderton Legion, Hall. All veterans are welcome to attend. The following is the inscription on a memorial in Burma - it reads. 'When you go home Tell them of us and say For your tomorrow, We gave our today. (Think about it fora moment Comrade.) Branch 540's Poppy chairman, Comrade Harvey Hillman can still use your services on Friday and Saturday, November 5 and 6. Let us all work together and make certain our 1971 Poppy Blitz will be the best one ever. As you are aware, the funds collected are used exclusively to assist needy veterans, their widows and orphans. We ask our good friends of Lucan, to please leave their porch lights on during the evening of Friday November 5 to assist our canvassers and to indicate your willingness to participate in our campaign. The crowd may have been small however this did not deter from the fun the participants enjoyed at Branch 540's annual 'Spooks' dance, the following are the prize winners for the best eluding the teachers. , The children enjoyed apple bobbing, games, costume judging and their lunch. The program was in charge of the Sunday School superin- tendent, Dwight Henderson. Sunday is Remembrance Sunday. The service will be at- tended by members of the Royal Canadian Legion and the epistle and gospel will be read by members of the Legion. Patricia Egan, of Denfield, honored bride-elect Sadie Egan, Friday with a family shower. Guests came from Lucan, London and Parkhill and the bride received many gifts, Mrs. Joe Kelly, returned to St. Joseph's Hospital Friday last. Joe Morkin is still in hospital, quite seriously ill, Mr, Morkin underwent surgery recently. Mr. & Mrs, Joseph Grace Sr. of London, formerly of Lucan, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Ivanhoe Club this past week. Unfortunately during the course of the evening Mr, Grace was overcome with a heart at- tack and is in intensive care St. Joseph's Hospital. Principal Berdan of the Bid- dulph-Lucan public schools, was very pleased at the turn out and interest in parents' night last Thursday. Mrs, Catherine Fischer, spent last weekend with Mr. & Mrs, Roy Fischer and with Mr, Bill Varga of London, Saturday night she spent with Mrs. Lorraine Fiseher. .enjoying wiener and corn roast. 'Sunday evening she visited with Mrs. Clara Maiers also London. Mrs. William Darling was honored with a baby shower, October 27, at the home of Mrs. Archie Sinclair. After playing contests, the guests, friends and. neighbours presented Mrs, Darling with many lovely gifts. A lunch was served by Mrs., Sin- clair, Among those who attended the Scottish Rite Ball at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club were Mr. & Mrs. Frank Huff of Exeter and Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Culbert of Lucan. Miss Margaret Kelly and Mrs. Joe Kelly of Lucan attended the wedding of Miss Kelly's grand- niece in Michigan. The Lucan post office will be closed November 11. costumes - first, Doreen Gray made up as a duck - second Larry Hockey, third Vic Neil, the latter two made very fine facsimile of the opposite sex, Here it is Comrades and Ladies - I am sure you will agree it was worth waiting for - 'Branch 540's winter season mixed sports' starts November 9 at 8,30 p.m. - You wanted an active sports porogram - You have an active sports program. But only as active as you the members want to make it. Sports Officer Gord Elson, has laid it on Comrades, all you have to do is participate. Remember the date and time - November 9 at 8.30 p.m. Smilin' Carl advises he has the every popular 'Country Airs' returning to the Sea Land and Air Lounge on Saturday Night November 6. 540's President, Comrade DeGraw advises he recently received a letter from that Jolly Old Fellow Santa advising he will be visiting the children of the Lucan Legion, Sunday December 12. So be good kiddies - It won't be long. and that's 30 for this week - remember - Laughter feels good all over but it only shows in one place.
