Annual Feeder and Stocker Sale
on October 18 in Stratton,
Outario. The sale was opened by
the Hon, Wm. A. Stewart, Ontario
Minister of Agriculture and. Food.
There was keen bidding for the
1,797 head offered, with a total of
approximately $343,000 being
paid.
An average price of $43.70 per
cwt was paid for 526 steer calves
weighing 300 to 600 pounds, with
one lot of 35 head bringing the top
price of $48. In same weight
range, 200 heifers averaged $35,
with the top lot selling at $38.25

heifer calf prices, with one lot of
bull calves averaging 421 pounds
selling at $43.25 per cwt. Yearling
feeders sold at $30 to $ 35,
depending on quality.
Most of the cattle were sold to
southern Ontario feeders who
were enthusiastic about the
steady improvement in the
quality of stock from the area.
Speaking at the sale, Mr. Stewart
urged the Rainy River Cat-
tlemen's Association, which put
on the sale, to increase the
number of cattle in the sale if
interest from southern Ontario
buyers is to be maintained.

Old tree grants
given approval
The Ron. Wm. A. Stewart,
Minister, Ontario Department of
Agriculture and Food, announced
today a new program for the
removal of trees in old orchards.
Speaking at the official opening
of new apple storage and
packing facilities for the Quinte
Fruit. Growers Ltd. near
Trenton, Mr. Stewart stated that
the new program has been added
to Section A of the Capital Grants
Program for Ontario farfners, It
replaces the existing assistance
for removal of old orchards.
Under the new program, grants
will be made at the following
rate; orchards of under 50 trees
per acre $3 per tree; orchards of
over 50 trees per acre $1.50 per
tree. The trees may be removed
by any method acceptable to the
owner.
"Any commercial farmer or
grower in Ontario can obtain up
to $1,000 for the purpose," said
Mr. Stewart, "but he must stay
within the maximum limits of the
main Capital Grants Program.
Changing markets, and the need
for the fruit industry to change
with these markets, make this
program necessary for the
removal of varieties and trees
that are no longer profitable or
viable."
Mr. Stewart advised that all
applications for assistance under
the new programs should be
made through county
agricultural offices. Fruit and
vegetables specialists in each
local agricultural office will be
available for any advice and
management assistance required
under the Orchard Removal
Program.
