Lots of
changes
With a new hockey season come a lot of changes
at the Exeter arena most of which will increase the
enjoyment for hockey fans and players alike.
Spectators at Friday night's all-star game will be
Pleasantly surprised at the overall improvement at the
local ice palace.
First of all the overall appearance is greatly
enhanced by a new coat of white paint throughout most
of the arena which makes the place look much brighter.
What hits the eye first is the north end of the
arena where 'the Hawks dressing room and some seats
have been removed to make room for a new scraping
and flooding machine.
The new machine arrived Monday morning as the
result of the generosity of the Exeter Kinsmen club and
will certainly be an improvement to scraping the ice
surface by hand.
The new dressing rooms at the west side of the
arena are being finished this week and should be ready
for Friday's game.
To add to spectator enjoyment is the installation
of a new time clock and scoreboard and a greatly
improved public address system.
Busy schedule
The Hawks start their home junior season Friday
night when they take on the league all-stars in an
exhibition game.
The Exeter club, last year's league champions will
be allowed to use last year's full club. This will give the
local fans another chance to watch two over-age players,
Larry Laye and Mike Hoy in action.
The only two missing from the line-up will be
Randy Preszcator and Joe O'Rourke who have moved
up in junior company. Preszcator who is with the
Markham juniors has been sidelined for more than a
week with a throat infection. O'Rourke is with the
Chatham juniors.
The Zurich Co-Ops, scheduled to compete again
in the district Western Junior "D" grouping have folded
giving the Hawks an open date this Sunday afternoon.
Quick arrangements were made early this week
and the Norwich Merchants will be at the Exeter arena
Sunday afternoon at two o'clock to take on the Hawks
in another exhibition tilt.
It is expected some of the Zurich players will be
working out with the Hawks this week.
Open season
in an announcement released Friday by the
Ontario Department of Lands and Forests, open deer
seasons were listed for three areas in the Lake Huron
area including Huron County.
Hunters will be allowed to shoot deer in Huron
and all of Grey County except Keppel township next
Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, November 1, 2 and
3.
In the Bruce peninsula and Keppel township in
Grey the season runs all next week from Monday to
Saturday.
No dogs are to be used while hunting deer in
these areas and hunters can only use rifles in Grey
, county and the Bruce peninsula. Shotguns are the only
weapons to be used in Huron county.
Hunters successfully shooting female deer in these
areas are asked to collect and turn in the reproductive
organs. For detailed instructions or to turn in specimens
hunters are asked to contact the nearest Department of
Lands and Forests office,
Those successful hunters wishing to assist the
Lands and Forests in its Indian program may turn in any
deer or moose hides at the nearest office and collect a
handwarmer for their trouble.
These hides will be tanned and then sent to
Indian craftsmen for their use in making leather goods.
Top money maker
When it comes to financial remuneration, it
appears that the Boston Bruins rank record-smashing
center Phil Esposito almost on a par with super boy
Bobby Orr.
Fred Sharf, Espo's business advisor, said in a
recent interview that Esposito signed a contract with the
Boston club that classes him as one of the top
money-makers in all sport.
It is believed that Esposito, who notched 76 goals
last season, inked a four-year pact calculated to bring
him $175,000 a year, while teammate Orr is repOrted to
have received an unprecedented $ 1-million arrangement.
"Espo's contract is so substantial," says his
lawyer Arnold Bloom, "that Phil and his wife Linda and
his children will never have to worry about money as
long as they live."
Hawks get even break
in opening junior games
In their first two starts of the
season, the Exeter Hawks broke
