if children are in attendance,
whereas in the case of schools for
trainable retarded children, no
distinction between elementary
and secondary school age is in-
dicated and no fees are therefore
charged to separate school
supporters because such a school
is placed under the jurisdiction of
the secondary school segment of
the divisional board.
Joseph Tokar, Assistant
Superintendent of Education
spoke on an option progran
initiated in St. Michael's School
in. Stratford and in St. Bonifaee
School in Zurich and one which
will start in January in St.
Marys in Holy Name School.
The program is for one hour
and fifteen minutes each Friday
when a student in Grade 7 or 8 is
permitted to select the subject he
wishes to study from several
courses offered.
In St. Boldface the options are
typing, woodworking, cooking
and knitting, Mr. Tokar reported.
He said in the cooking
program, the four boys who chose
it are given instructions in it in a
private home near the school
while the six girls go to the
convent for lessons. Be suggested
this was better than buying
stoves and other equipment to put
in the schools and it produced
parent involvement which he
considered ideal.

All Are Welcome
Trtistee Ted Geoffrey, RH, 2
Zurich, chairman of the per-
sonnel committee of the Huron-
Perth County Homan Catholic
Separate School Board, and
Trustee F. J. Vere, Stratford,
were appointed at a board
meeting Tuesday to a committee
to draw up specifications for a
teachers' Group Life in-
surance plan.
On the committee, also, will be
two representatives from the
administrative staff of the board
and tWo teachers. The insurance
plan was included in the salary
contract for 1971-72 term and is to
be effective January 1, 1972 for
all employees in amount equal to
one times earnings plus depen-
dents' coverage of $1,000 for
spouse and $500 for each child
with 50 per cent of the cost being
paid by the board.
The hoard endorsed a
resolution from the Brant County
Separate School hoard that
financing for the Cerebral Palsy
School be designated to the
secondary school section of the
divisional board in order to be
consistent with legislation
regarding financing trainable
retarded children's education.
This resolution results from
Cerebral Palsy schools having
come under the jurisdiction of the
county boards of education upon
request a- of January 1, 1971.
Therefore, any children of
elementary school age whose
parent; are separate school
supporters must be charged a fee

platform of the Bell Aerospace of

morning.
W. M, Smith, vice-president of
the firm, which hopes to have its
first unit off the production line
by the end of December, said the
huge welded aluminum boxes —
it lakes eight for each hovercraft

the 38,000-pound craft.

payload, fuel and crew. There is
room for four passehgers,
The company plans to use the
Grand Bend runway as well as
Lake Huron for testing the 63-foot
long hovercraft.
Mr. Smith said the plan is to get
the machine onto the lake as soon
as possible. It can go over ice as
well,
The engines provide corn-
pressed air to operate the craft
by means of a seven-foot cen-
trifugal fan.
Once the first unit is off the line
it is planned to complete one
every two months.
The Grand Bend firm now has a
work staff of about 75.
An extremely versatile am-
phibious vehicle, the hovercraft
has demonstrated its capabilities
to perform passenger transport
and cargo-hauling missions
under adverse conditions in
climates from the tropics to the
Arctic.
The craft has shown itself
adaptable to providing year-
around surface transportation in
the Arctic. Tests have shown that
the low pressure of the air
cushion does not affect the
ecology of any environment. Supper

plan election too
Students of Stephen Central
school are having an election of
their own to-day with three
candidates ill the running;
Students from grades five to
eight will be voting in surroun-
dingsquite similar to those for the
provincial elections with a
similar polling booth and of-
ficials.
Michael Ondrejicka is running
as an Independent, Paul Geiser is
representing the New Stephen
Central Party and Cindy Becker
is running for the Young Con-
cerned Student Party.
The three candidates have been
campaigning with posters and
speeches to attract votes,
Paul Geiser is using the slogan,
"The man who gets things done."
of the school must give his con-
sent for the teachers to be absent
from duty on the dates involved.
The board was more generous
in the case of the SHDHS night
school where an instructor,
William Hart, wanted to set up a
ceramics class and had offered to
loregohis salaryand put it toward
a kiln which is vital to the study.
Board members agreed that
the kiln should be purchased
since when it was no longer in use
at SHDHS it could be utilized in
other county schools, and the
instructor's salary be paid ac-
cording to the regular schedule.
In other business, the board
approved mileage allowances of
12 cents per mile for student
services personnel, people who
by the nature of their work must
visit many schools in the county
and operate their own vehicles;
heard that construction progress
at the new Seaforth PS addition is
much slower than originally
hoped and that fears now are that
the school will not be completed
per contract at the end of
December; and found that the
next regular board meeting will
be Monday, November 15 with an
academic presentation at 3:30
p.m., committee of the whole
board (In Camera) from 7:30 to 8
p,m. and open meeting at 8 p.m.
An overseas tour to London and
Paris by the senior students at.
South Huron District High School
from March 27 to March 30 in-
clusive, was not turned down by
the board of education at its
Monday evening meeting, but it
was decided that since the
teachers who will accompany the
tour will lose Lime from regular
classes, they should he given a
leave of absence without pay for
the occasion,
It was pointed out by Dr. Alex
Addison, Clinton, that the board
would be supporting "affluent
students from affluent families"
if the teachers were permitted to
accompany the tour without
question. He said that since not
all school students would be able
to participate, those that stayed
at home needed a teacher more
than ever to compensate for the
knowledge they would miss on
the tour.
The board admitted the
teachers might abandon the tour
if they were not paid as though
they were in the classroom,
because upon retirement the
teacher could find himself or
herself with extra time to make
up.
However, it was agreed that
these tours could be booked for a
time other than school days —
during the Christmas or Easter
break, for instance.
The tour from South Huron is to
be a "private undertaking on the
part of the teachers, acting as
private citizens, and the principal
