While regular classes are closed, over 300 teachers will attend meetings, plan major field trips and other special ex- periences for their pupils, and visit schools in other centres. Provincial legislation through the Schools Administration Act permits observance of such a day when teachers participate in an approved program that will update and improve their knowledge :ant}: skills. Theme of this year's day is "individual involvement" and each teacher will do something which he or she has identified as being particularly beneficial to his own needs and those of his students. Convener of the committee planning the event, Mrs. Audrey Atchison, principal of Caradoc South School at Melbourne, has indicated that some of the ac- tivities include: 91 teachers planning orienteering and other outdoor education events; 43 studying presentations at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto; 139 visiting special school programs in Sarnia, Chatham, Windsor, Toronto, Kitchener, Waterloo and other localities; and a number at- tending a science workshop in London. very special importance is the fact that our very own Zone A 5 Commander Comrade Bill Smith received an award for 'service above and beyond the call of duty' - something to do with a happening during a recent full executive meeting held recently at North Bay. Comrades if Comments ap- pears to be a bit disjointed this week (did I hear someone say when doesn't it) possibly it's becauseI compiled it a little early - you see while you read this I am up in good old Sault Ste Marie visiting with my dad and renewing old acquaintances, Sure nice up this way in the fall, the scenery is really beautiful - the changing colors of the leaves on the mountain slopes - Come on Daley - quit getting sen- timental - Oh OK Comrades lets just say it is truly lovely. Don't forget Comrades November 11 is just around the corner and Branch 540's Poppy chairman comrade Harvey Hillman is going to need an hour or so of your time. The Royal Canadian Legion Poppy campaign and Remembrance observances is what it's all about Comrades. Surely we can spare just a couple of hours, once a year, to assist in this most important phase of Legion - Our Poppy program is where funds are raised to assist financially our less fortunate comrade, his widow or orphan - these funds are spent in our own community and every penny must be accounted for, and finally comrade put a few moments aside to gather with us at the cenotaph on November 11 to pay homage to our fallen comrades who paid the supreme sacrifice that we may continue to live in freedom. Comrade Crudge our branch treasurer, has advised Branch 540's building fund has been started and Comrade Gord Elson, branch sports officer donated the first contribution, being the profit from the corn roast. I can assure the comrades the fund has a long way to go before we can even think of expanding - any suggestions? District A Convention at St. Thomas is over and I am happy to say Branch 540 had good representation. Some interesting fact was mentioned. One item that caught my attention in particular was the fact that the Royal Canadian Legion and Ladies Auxiliary have awarded bursaries in the Province of Ontario in the amount of $340,000,00 since 1950 - the Comrades were also reminded if they intend to build under V.L.A. they had better get busy as the fund is 'kaput' in 1974. Further Comrade if you have a 50 percent disability, be it service related or not, you can build or purchase a house on a city lot.
