talk of Africa
By GORDON MORLEY
Thanksgiving was the theme
for the October UCW meeting
held at the home of Mrs. Harvey
Steeper who opened the session
with an appropriate poem.
The devotional was taken by
Mrs, Jack Trevithick, Kathleen
Morley and Mrs. George Lee.
Mrs. Steeper gave a paper on
"Africa" noting the changes
taking place today, Mrs. Fred
Fenton gave a reading and
presided over the business.
Fourteen members answered the
roll call.
Group 1 ladies assisted the
hostess at the social hour.

been mentioned. Ross is a good
and tree friend of Legion, who is
as close to any Legion function as
his telephone. It was my
pleasure, on behalf of the
Legion to present to our good
friend Ross, the Royal Canadian
Legion Certificate of Merit.
As you may have guessed,
When the District Commander is
invited to a function it must be for
a reason and it generally means
putting him to work. However I
feel sure our District Com-
mander Comrade George Brown
of Chatham, derived a great deal
of pleasure from the task he was
called upon to perform. In
recognition of fine work, `The
Exeter Times Advocate' has done
over the years in the field of
`Public Relations' on behalf of
Legion, by publishing in word and
photograph the Legion at work in
the community; our District
Commander presented Bill
Batten, editor of this fine weekly,
with the Royal Canadian Legion
`Dominion Command' Media
Award with an accompanying
citation over the signature of the
Dominion President Comrade
Judge Redmond Roche 0,B,E„
K.St.J., E.D,, C.D., Q.C.
This is a most deserving award
and the Comrades of Branch 540
were pleased to have had the
opportunity to recommend the
Exeter Times Advocate for it, A
note of interest, this is only the
second time the Media Award has
been presented, quite a
distinguished honor to our many
..friends of the Advocate,
'Congratulations,'
We were also happy to welcome
the hard working immediate past
president of the Ladies Auxiliary
to Branch 272 of the Royal
Canadian Legion, liespeler,
Comrade Crane. to our presen-
tation night and trust she had an
enjoyable evening.
Smilin' Carl advises Saturday's
entertainment supplied by One
Eyed Jack was well received as
was 540's first attempt at
amateur night. Winner of First
prize was the husband and wife
team of Don and Sylvia Geiser
playing flute and piano duet,
Comrade Harry Bond and his son
won second place honors with
their rendition of some favourite
songs while third place went to
Pat Regan. This type of en-
tertainment was most ap-
preciated and Smilin' Carl ad-
vises he has another such night
laid on for January.
Our good Comrades of
Branch 116 Strathroy advise they
are sponsoring a mixed dart
tournament on Saturday
November 13, starting time 12
noon. The cost $1.00 per person
per event. Apparently there are
many awards to be won plus cash
prizes for doubles and team
events. Anyone interested in
entering a team please contact
our Sports Officer Comrade Gord
Elson.
540's Early Bird campaign is
progressing favorably, only you
can make it 100 percent suc-
cessful. 'Dig Deep' Comrade, pay
your 72 dues and let 540 again
lead the way and show the other
branches what can be done with
the co-operation of everyone.
Comrades are reminded the
District A Convention hosted by
our comrades of St. Thomas will
be held Saturday and Sunday,
October 16th and 17th. Here is
were we get into the 'Nitty Gritty'
of Legion. Here is where we
formulate Legion policy. Here is
where we meet our Comrades
from throughout District A,
discuss business, enjoy Legion
comradeship (which incidentally
is second to none), greet old and
make new friends, I could go on
and on. Make it a point to attend
Comrade, take your lady along -
you'll be glad you did.
Sorry folks-540's bus to
Oktoberfest in Kitchener is sold
out, my goodness the tickets went
fast - maybe next year we should
start a little earlier and try for
two buses. Must be quite a
celebration, next year I will put
my name in a little earlier for a
ticket.
And that's 30 for this week -
remember-Self-praise has no real
value. Put it in the same class as
anything else you get for nothing.
