Consitt BOX 130 236-4332 accordance with the standard of life which they have maintained in the past, As part of the right of support, a wife has an implied right to pledge her husband's credit for necessaries which is very dif- ficult to rescind. The extent of a husband's liability for his wife's debts is difficult to define. An advertisement in the local newspaper warning tradesmen that he will not be resonsible for his wife's debts is of little value according to my information. A better idea is for the husband to contact the local tradespeople separately and let the latter then take the responsibility as to whether they give credit to the wife or not. The wife is not responsible for her husband's debts except where he entered into a contract on her behalf and with her ex- press authority. And that, dear readers, is just some of the information included in "Law and the Woman in Ontario." Should you be in- terested in hearing what the law has to say about property rights, dissolution of marriage and inheritance, these subjects will be continued in another column at as later date. Voting It points out that nowhere in Ontario are women disqualified from voting by reason only of their sex. Any woman may vote if she's a Canadian citizen or a British subject and lived in the country the year prior to the election, The age qualification is 21 years in Federal elections and 18 years in provincial or municipal elections, Before an election a voters' list will be prepared by enumerators and once your name is on this list you need only go to the appointed polling station on election day to cast your vote. If your name does not appear on this list you will have to contact the returning official in your riding and have your name added. Anyone qualified to vote may run as a candidate except government employees, people holding government contracts and those guilty of corrupt practice. Marriage Providing no lawful cause exists to hinder the marriage anyone who is 18 years of age may be married three days after the issue of a licence, or the time specified by a Special Permit. Instead of a marriage licence, the couple may have marriage banns announced by their minister, the final announcement being made five days before the wedding, This alternative is not available to those who have had a previous marriage dissolved by divorce or annulment. Marriage may be solemnized in either a religious or civil ceremony. Civil marriages may be performed by a judge in his chamber or by a magistrate in his office and must take place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Girls, if you happen to have your eye on your step-father, forget it. In the sight of God, yes, but in the case of man it's taken several hundred years to bring his thinking up-to- date with St. Paul's. Until fairly recent times, women have not occupied a position of equality with men. At one time they were universally regarded as inferior beings or even as a form of property. Now, women have a legal status generally the same as men under both civil and criminal law, A little booklet put out by the Ontario Women's Bureau of The Department of Labour called, "Law and the Woman in Ontario makes interesting reading. Ocieit eeed This week we extend Birthday Wishes to the following: MRS. LAVINA KEENER, 86, September 24, MRS. ERNIE AP- PLETON, 80, September 29, ALEX RAGIN, 86, October 3. The Exeter Times- ' Advocate is always happy to extend greetings to our senior citizens. If you know someone who would like their birthday to appear in the column, please get in touch with us. Change of name I was surprised to read that there is no law which requires a woman to adopt her husband's surname upon marriage. This change of name if merely a custom. However, after marriage, a woman's passport is no longer valid and she must obtain a new one, which indicates not only her own surname if she chooses to continue using it, but also her husband's surname. - Support One of the duties the law places on a husband is that he must support his wife. He must do so in MRS. ANNE HELM centres, but they find life in Exeter pleasant and more relaxed. The children, eight-year-old Richard and six-year-old Elizabeth "like it very much" according to their Mother and have already made many friends. Anne, an avid reader, is "very impressed" with the local library and comments on it being much better than the one she used in Montreal. She is also interested in P.T.A. MRS.
