Randy Preszcator, who was chosen by the Toronto Marlboros as their first choice in the midget draft has signed with that club. Randy is now attending high school in Markham, The other Hawk to move up is defenceman Joe O'Rourke, now a member of the Chatham junior Maroons. Several local hockey players and fans have taken in some of the Chatham exhibition games and were impressed with O'Rourke's play on the Chatham defence. While we haven't had a chance to see him in a Chatham uniform we did hear about him last week. We were at a Boston Bruin workout for a few minutes and got into conversation with a London resident. The talk got around to the London Knight-Chatham game which was played the night before and the London man said he thought O'Rourke looked like one of the best Chatham performers. Our congratulations go to both boys as they attempt to move up the hockey ladder and we know all district fans will be watching their progress with a lot of interest. Same pattern The junior Panthers used the same pattern in chalking up their victory. The offence gained a total of 262 yards while Stratford could only crack the South Huron line for a mere 63 yards. Some fine running by Paul Truemner set up the first SH score as Perry Stover hit Brian Taylor with a 35 yard pass. In the second quarter, it was Stover through the air again, this time hitting Pete Wuerth on a successful 22 yard pass play for a touchdown. The final Panther major score came in the fourth quarter when Paul Truemner rambled seven yards into the end zone. Two of the South Huron touch- downs were converted by two- point passes, The other point was The two South Huron District High School, football teams got off to a flying start in regular Huron- Perth Conference play Wed- nesday by chalking up a double win. In the opener, the South Huron Panthers in quest of their third straight H-P championship blanked Stratford Central 25-0. The local senior Panthers with a good solid performance both ways also blanked the opposition from Stratford by a score of 18-0, The next action for the two South Huron clubs comes this afternoon, Thursday when they travel to Wingham for a double header, Good combination The senior win over Stratford was accomplished by good efforts by both the offensive and defensive units of coach Hon Bogart's club. The offence with quarterback Murray Glanville in charge gained 197 yards on the ground and picked up 89 through the air waves for an overall yardage gain of 286. On the other side of the ledger, the Panther defensive corps allowed their opponents only 55 yards on passes and contained their ground game to a plus of only three yards on 19 plays, The seniors hit tile scoreboard in the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns, both on short yardage situations. Pius Dietrich counted the first score on a one yard plunge and Don Truemner went over from two yards out shortly after. The final major score for the winners came midway through the third period when. Gary Eagleson picked off a Stratford forward pass and galloped 30 yards to the goal-line. The first quarter play was featured by Barry Baynham's the provincial crown, The Dashwood club got ex- cellent pitching from left Jim Guenther and right hander Brian Bestard. Guenther allowed only two hits in. winning the first game while chalking up eightstrike-outs. In the second game, Bestard allowed eight hits but was never in serious trouble as his mates staked him to an early lead. The Dashwood juveniles won the Ontario Baseball Association juvenile "D" championship Sunday with a double win over Welcome. In the opening game of a best- of-three series played early Sunday ofternoon in Dashwood, the Dashwood youngsters eked out a 4-3 win. The second game that started at 5:30 was strictly no contest as Dashwood scored eight times in the third inning and went on to record as easy 20-6 win to clinch rt '11111111111111111iiiiiiii11111011imiimiiiiIIII1111111111111lit First night for darters BOWLING SCORES 11111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111111 YJ The popular Exeter Legion mixed dart league opened the 1971-72 schedule Friday night with a full list of games. The hard throwing right hander from the Grand Bend area besides turning in a good pitching effort wielded a hot bat. Bestard cleared the straightaway centre field fence with a long drive in the big third inning with two mates aboard, tripled to the fence in the fifth, singled in the seventh also drew two bases on balls. The only Dashwood performer to reach the bases on every trip to the plate was third sacker Mike Chandler who whacked a double, two singles, walked twice and was hit by a pitch in six ap- pearances at the plate. The new champs scored twice in the first inning when Gary Hartman was safe on an error, Brian Bestard walked and both scored on Jim Guenther's single left. The big rally that put the score out of reach and chased Welcome starter Jim Smith to the showers came in the third. Of the first six Dashwood batters to the plate five hit safely and one drew a walk. Jim Guenther and Mike Chandler each doubled while Gerard O'Rourke, Peter Kleinstiver and Mike Fleet singled and Jim Neilsen walked to get the rally rolling. Gary Hartman reached first on a fielder's choice and Bestard followed with his long home run. Three more runs came across in the fourth with singles by John Hayter and Gerald O'Rourke providing the power. In the sixth John Hayter's double, his eighth hit of the two game series, Brian Bestard's triple and a single from the bat of Mike Chandler produced four runs for the winners. Bestard singled to send Chandler and Gary Hartman home in the seventh and scored himself on Jim Guenther's sacrifice fly to complete the Dashwood scoring. Errors help Errors by the Welcome infield in the first game helped the Dashwood cause considerably, especially in the late innings. With Welcome leading 3-2 in the bottom of the eighth, Gary Hartman and Gerald O'Rourke both reached the bases on errors and came home on John Hayter's solid single. It was Hayter's fifth con- secutive hit and proved to be the big important blow ensuring the Dashwood victory. Welcome was first to hit the scoreboard with a single run in the second inning. Dashwood came back in the sixth to score twice as Brian Bestard opened with a single. After the next two batters were retired Ed Holubowicz kept things rolling by reaching first on an error. Two following miscues on balls hit by Gary Hartman and Randy Becker sent Bestard and Holubowicz scampering home. The first two Welcome batters in the top of the seventh were able to reach base on a hit and an error and came around to count on a sacrifice and fielder's choice. The Dashwood club backed Guenther's pitching with a good solid defensive performance with a long running catch by Gary Hartman in the fourth inning being the feature. Wins own game The star of the second game that Dashwood won 20-6 was Better times ahead While the faithful Detroit Tiger fans in this area haven't had too much to cheer about since the 1968 World Series, things may be looking up for next year. Our favorite Tigers put on a bit of a spurt two weeks ago and came within four games of the front running Baltimore Orioles but then faltered. By taking the first three games of a series against the Orioles, the Tigers did get closer than most fans could hope for even at the all-star game break. We happened to catch a Detroit sports program Monday morning and an interview with Mickey Stanley. The versatile Tiger player said he doubted that the Orioles figured the Tigers were a threat even at the four game deficit.. Stanley went on to say that the Tigers with another first line pitcher would be right in the thick of things next year. In that vein it is almost certain the Detroit Club will go into the trading market and the latest rumours have the Tigers giving up either Willie Horton or Jim Northrup and a pitcher, possibly Canadian Mike Kilkenny for big Sam McDowell of the Cleveland Indians. With the closing of the home American league season for the Tigers Sunday afternoon records show the attendance at Tiger Stadium this summer reached 1,591,073, the second highest in the junior circuit. 'Boston Red Sox have the highest attendance for 1971 and the Baltimore Orioles are the only other club with a chance to get over the million mark with a couple of home contests slated for this week. More races Due to the success of harness racing at last year's Exeter Fair and again Saturday the Exeter Kinsmen club is sponsoring an afternoon meet on Saturday, October 9. Racing secretary Jim Wallace reports that two of the classes are filled and he has a couple of entries in the third division. Anyone with horses that qualify for this event are asked to call Wallace at 235-2300. Conditions for the race are non-winners of $2,000 lifetime and also horses that raced in claimers of $1,750 and less. Jets getting ready The Lucan-Ilderton Jets are now holding regular practice sessions at the Huron Park arena in preparation for the coming OHA intermediate season. Manager Don Urbshott has lined up several exhibition games, The Jets will travel to Woodstock on Wednesday, October 6 to take on the Woodstock Royals and will meet the same club back at the Huron Park arena, Tuesday, October 19. Plans are tentative for the Western Mustangs to visit the Jets on October 29. The club, provincial champs in 1969-70 are expected to play only exhibition games throughout the season with opposition coming from Tillsonburg, Aylmer, Delhi, Ingersoll, Detroit and Erie, Pennsylvania. District fans may be interested to learn that the Ontario Hockey Association has changed one section in the rule book that affected the Jets last year. After the final game of a playoff series, the Durham Huskies protested the eligibility of the Lucan-Ilderton club on the grounds they did not have the necessary four players residing in Lucan or Ilderton. The protest was upheld at that time and the Jets folded. After heating a resolution from the district club, the 014A has now inserted the words "Intermediate 13 and C" after the words "Junior A" in paragraph 109 of page 37 of the OHA manual, This means that the lets now have an unlimited territory as far as the residence of a player is concerned providing they do not infringe on another team's territory or draw from a higher population area.
