Many entrants in parade Local talent entertains
Terrific weather for Kirkton fair
For the first time in many
years, the weatherman was in a
good mood for the Kirkton
Saturday.
The fair dates were moved
ahead two weeks this year and
the move proved to be successful
and district residents flecked out
to provide one of the better
parades ever seen in Kirkton.
The Kirkton Women's Institute
won the prize for the best
decorated float and the Brownies
were judged the best marching
group.
Harry Burgin piloted the best
vintage car before 1933, Trudy
Johns who led the parade won the
best horse and rider award and
Lana Marshall had the best
decorated bicycle.
Riding in the parade with
president Peter Simpson and
Ann Urquhart, 1971 Perth Dairy
Princess was Huron MP Bob
McKinley who officially opened
the fair.
In his brief opening marks,
McKinley recalled the days when
he was an exhibitor at the
Kirkton Fair with hereford
cattle.
The afternoon program was a
busy one with races for the
children, pony races and 4-H club
competitions with entertainment
by district youngsters.
Appearing with their various
Champion steer fed by David
Payoter purchased by
Coleman's, London for $35.7$ per
cwt. Reserve champion fed by
Brian Pym purchased by ilensall
Livestock Exchange for $35.00
per cwt. Steer fed by Jack
Christie was purchased by
Clarence P oor ting a, Kirkton,
The two divisions of the safety
poster competition were won by
Gary Urquhart and Susan Evans,
Craft winners were David
Stephen, Jim Spading, Jayne
Blackler, Ellen Eveleigh, Danny
Mills, Susan Schaefer and Debbie
Schaefer.
Winners in writing were
Patricia Willis, Lance
Giesebrecht, Bob Cowdrey,
Nadine Penner, Catherine Abbott
and Susan Coddington.
Best in art were Laurie
Westman, Lance Geisebrecht,
Diane Stacey, Joan Ross,
Catherine Abbott, Debbie
Schaefer and Denise Robinson,
Heading the map contests were
Susan Evans, Denise Robinson
and Debbie Schaefer.
The holder of the winning ticket
in the calf draw was George
Coddington, R,R 1, St. Marys,
Steers fed by Robert Blackler,
Morrison, Mrs. Murray Coward,
Mrs. Rosemary Schaefer and
Mrs. Tom Bern.
In crafts and hobbies including
decorated tube painting the top
winners were Mrs. M. Nairn and
Mrs. Lorna Murray.
Stan Francis gained threefirsts
in grains and, seeds while Mervin
Shute won two top awards.
Ewart Crago won the field
competition in mixed grain while
Junior Doupe was the winner in
grain corn.
Mrs. Burgin, top winner in two
other divisions was back in
business in the vegetable division
winning firsts for parsnips,
cauliflower, tomatoes, water-
melons, squash, cucumbers and
onions.
The junior section open to
public school students drew a
large number of entries.
Debbie Schaefer won two firsts
with flowers while Paul Simpson
topped the fruit and vegetable
department. Heading the wild
flowers were Susan Schaefer, S.
Willis and Rosemary Simpson.
In baking, the school winners
were Ellen Eveleigh, Debbie
Schaefer, Gary Urquhart and
Jayne Blackler,
singing and dancing numbers
were Nancy and Elaine Nickles
of Granton, the Westman sisters.
Michelle Robinson, Ellen
Eveleigh and Gary Urquhart and
Brian Hill.
John Urquhart proved to be the
best showman in. the Kirkton 4-H
calf club competitions with
Peggy Simpson showing the best
calf for seniors and Paul
Parkinson with the top junior
calf,
A lot of the prizes in the
domestic science section stayed
right at home in Kirkton. Mrs.
Harry Burgin was a big winner
with 12 firsts and five seconds in
the canned fruits and
vegetables department,
Also getting an even dozen red
ribbons in the baking and canning
section in addition to winning
four specials for pies and cakes
was Mrs. Coddington,
Mrs, Marion Urquhart checked
in with seven first prizes and the
best casserole dinner in a dish.
Mrs. Elaine Stephen copped four
first prizes and the McCormick's
graham cracker pie contest.
In the flower displays it was
again Mrs. Burgin that led the
way with an even dozen red
ribbons and six seconds. Mrs.
Verda Morrison followed with
nine firsts and Mrs. Ellis Strahan
was third with eight.
Fred McClymont of Varna
continued his dominance in fruit
with 30 first awards. Alvin Crago
took three first prizes in apples.
Competition was keen in the
ladies work department. Donna
Coddington was the winner with
11 firsts while five other ladies
were not far behind.They were

in the 4-H Beef Calf Club were -

In the Junior Beef Calf Club
(not 4-H) the winners for the best
calf were Brian Pym with a gain
of 395 lbs., Mark Harrigan,
Gerald Johns, Larry Rundle, Phil
Harrigan, and Norman Bilyea.
The winners for showmanship
in the Jr. Calf Club were - Larry
Rundle, Brian Pym, Gerald
Johns, Norman Bilyea, Phil
Harrigan, and Mark Harrigan.
Best calf in the Junior and Senior
division was fed by David
Paynter with a gain of 404 lbs.
Trophy for best showmanship in
the two classes was won by Beth
Passmore, 2nd in showmanship
won by Joan Pym,
Winners in 4-H Holstein Senior
Class were Peggy Simpson,
Wendy Heard, John Urquhart,
Carl Foley, Katherine Simpson,
Paul Van De Walle, Vernon
Thomson, Earl Thomson, George
Foley, Doug Hamilton and Leslie
Youngson.
Junior 4-H Holstein Calf Club
winners were Paul Parkinson,
David Foster and Dennis
McCorquodale.

Judge for the Holstein Calves

and the judge for beef calves was
George Early, Kerwood.
