IN MEMORIAM —
MY GRANDFATHER -Mr.
Wilbur (Wib) Martin
In 1885 my grandfather
was born and today he is
ending his life in the same
community he found himself
eighty-six years ago - Exeter,
Ontario.
What can a man have ac-
complished in eighty-six years
in a small community by to-
day's metropolitan standards
of "big"?
For his own family: he
prepared them for a life of
great expectations - for an
unrelenting feeling and need
for a certain percentage of
excellence in every undertak-
ing and task performed; for
the community: he expected
very little for himself and
tried to give as much as he
could offering goodwill and
credit for jobs well done.
If you are 25 years of age
or over, my grandfather is, no
doubt, the man who supplied
you with your first two-
wheeler bicycle, or your
piano.
He is also the man who
moved in many kind ways to
make your life a little more
, human in a small community
- today he is not with the
community any longer.
He was, some two weeks
ago, made ' "great-grand-
father" with ;;the birth of a
daughter too his grandson
Peter. This will be the first
grandchild who will not have
the benefit of the generosity
and love my brothers and I
experienced - and although
little Margot Anne will not be
aware of her loss, she will no
doubt hear the stories of her
father's happiness as a child -
made complete during holi-
day trips to Exeter.
He is, to me, a subject of
constant interest, carrying
with him so many stories of a
town, a townspeople, and a
childhood of mine which is
totally recalled by so many
reminders that even the ap-
proaching fall sounds of in-
sects at the side of the road
can call forth a remembrance
of a jaunty felt hat with a red
feather tucked in the brim
and a happy grin and chuckle
amidst a chorus of "Casey
Would Waltz" whilst we do
an evening turn around the
"five mile block" in a little
blue coupe!
To my mother and my
Aunt Margaret he is a father
- sometimes stern I am sure
- but always a comfort and

Building offered
for use of town
Mel Gaiser and Jim Kneale
appeared before Exeter council
this week to see if there was any
interest on the part of the town in
renting or buying the property
owned by the two at the corner of
Main and Sanders St.
They suggested the present car
wash building could house the
fire department's equipment,
or they would be willing to alter
or add to the building in any way
requested by council.
There was little interest
displayed by council. Reeve
Derry Boyle said he couldn't see
any value in leasing property.
It was finally decided to leave
the matter with the protection to

He is and now "was" my

brother Peter named him
with his first spoken word,
which came out sounding like
"Bompie" and so he has re-
mained to us . . . Bom-
pie a little humorous you
may think on paper but a
tribute he would so love to
see in print I am sure, as he
was afterall, a family man,
who loved his home, his
friends, my grandmother, his
children: Patsy, my mother
and Margie, my aunt; his
grandchildren: Peter and
Bobby, my brothers - and
especially he loved Exeter
and the townspeople - and
so he never left it, except
today he is gone and I must
make mention of it because I
think it would make com-
plete a contentment that he
would feet if, in some quiet
way you knew our Bompie,
Mr, Wilbur (Wib) Martin as
we have always known him.

Three Exeter youths were
involved in an exciting incident also last week.
during a camping trip to
Algonquin Park last week.
Dave Keating, Glenn Cockwell
and Peter Moore were out in a
canoe on Lake Opeongo on a
fishing trip when they heard a
burst of gunfire.
They were unconcerned with
this but on returning to their tent
trailer found that a hole had been
ripped in the side and some of
their food was gone.
On reporting to a nearby
Department of lands and forest
ranger they were told very
casually, "Oh, yes, we shot a
black bear near your trailer."
Before being shot the bear
consumed a pound of butter, two
dozen eggs and a pound or so of
bacon.
The boys later had their picture
taken with the bear and brought a
few of. its claws home for a
souvenir.
The canvass side of the tent
trailer rented from Graham
Arthur Motors was badly
damaged. Mr. Arthur said this
week he was having the canvass
replaced by his insurance
company.
The bear shot outside the
Exeter boys camp weighed 150
pounds. Rangers shot two other
