Time.;Acfvocatok August 74, 1971 NFU launches boycott against food company The National Farmers' Union has officially launched a nation- wide boycott of Kraft Foods Limited. The announcement was made by NFU vice-president, Walter Miller, at a meeting in Lucan, attended by officials from locale in Western Ontario,. The Lucan meeting, a last in a series of similar meetings,, unanimously endorsed the recommendation to boycott Kraft. "We have tried all other methods to achieve a bargaining position in the dairy industry," said Mr. Miller. "We have tried to talk to government agencies and the dairy corporations. At first Kraft wouldn't even return our telephone calls. When we picketed their plant at Ingleside, the Ontario Milk Marketing Board performed the role of strike breaker for Kraft. Following the picketing action at Ingleside we again tried to meet with Kraft, but were turned .down." "There is no way farmers can carry on this present situation," the vice-president said, "with the larger multi-national dairy corporations establishing the Price and marketing conditions and having their position backed up by the government controlled Milk Marketing Board, the farmers will always come out on the short end. We are determined to establish a recognized bargaining position which will result in the NFU negotiating price and marketing arrangements on behalf of far- mers, The OMMI3 can continue to perform a brokerage function." "Make no mistake about it, this boycott is designed to force Kraft Foods to accept our terms," Mr. Miller continued. "The boycott will be launched on a low key basis and accelerated over the country in the weeks ahead. Our people are determined and we are going to win, The Agromart is turning into a one-stop farm service centre with top-quality farm products and the service to back them, Come on in. Exam night will be held at Brucefield Centennial School, August 30 at 8:00 p.m. Get results on milk issue Dairy farmer Jack Stafford, president of Huron County Federation of Agriculture commenting on news release of increase of the support price for industrial milk, attributed in- crease to action started by Huron County Federation, when they initiated a meeting in early March with Huron County Milk Committee, O.M.M.B. and in- terested dairy farmers in the county. At that meeting they asked for an increase in industrial milk of 50 cents, this present increase is a start in the right direction. O.M.M.B. sets the price for in- dustrial milk and has not yet decided if this full increase will be passed on to the farmers. "Production has declined sharply in the past few months," said Mr. Stafford, "and this action by Canadian Dairy Commission hopefully will alleviate the situation." economic specialists have been con- ducting months of research into crop- planning, livestock production and farm economics.
