The Dashwood pee wees were
eliminated from further play in
the Western Ontario Athletic
Association Tuesday night when
they lost the third and deciding
game of best-of-three series to
Belgrave 11-7.
Dashwood won the first game
on their home diamond Wed-
nesday by a 10-6 score but lost
the second contest 11-5, Sunday
in Belgrave.
In the opening game win, Tom
Hayter started on the mound for
Dashwood and Doug McIsaac
The two clubs that finished in a
tie for first place in the regular
schedule of the Exeter and
district Ree softball league won
their first games of the playoffs.
Monday night in the first
games of similar best-of-five sets
in the "A" division, the Legion
edged Hensall 8-7 and the
Hawks downed the Kinsmen 4-2.
Second games will be played
tonight, Thursday with the
Hawks and Kinsmen meeting on
the Exeter diamond and the
Legion travelling to Hensall.
Two runs in the seventh and
final inning allowed the Hawks to
chalk up their opening 4-2 win
over the Kinsmen.
The game was a pitchers battle
from start to finish. Brian
Hodgins who picked up the win
for the Hawks allowed only one
hit while his opponent Jim
Johnston was as equally effective
being touched for only three well
scattered hits.
The Kinsmen started the
scoring with both their runs in the
second inning. Jim Russell and
Rob Grant drew walks and both
scored on a single from the bat of
Bob Lammie and a ground-out,
The only other Kinsmen base
runners were Jack Glover in the
third after walking, he was
thrown out trying to steal and
Rob Grant reaching base on an
error in the seventh.
The Hawks first reached the
scoreboard in the third when
Brian Hodgins reached first on an
error and scored without the aid
of a hit.
With two out in the fifth, Dale
McKenzie blasted a bases empty
homer to tie the score at 2-2.
In the Hawks seventh, Bill
Farquhar and Bill Bourne drew
free passes to first and came
around to count on George
Bruneau's single,
The other Hawk base hit was a
single by Ron Grasdahl in the
first inning.
Late rally
Two runs after two were out in
the bottom of the seventh inning
enabled the Legion to pull a
victory out of the fire by an 8-7
count over Hensall.
With defeat staring the Legion
boys in the face, Earl Wagner
started things off with a double
and in quick succession Jim Pfaff
and Jim Hewitt had also hit two
baggers and the game was over.
Hensall jumped out in front
quickly and were leading 5-0
after three innings of play.
Two bases on balls, Bill Bell's
single and a triple from the bat of
Morrison sent the first two
Hensall runs home in the first
inning.
In the second frame, Jack
Bettke and Morrison drew walks
and came around to the plate on
Bell's double.

FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haugh.
Good
season
With all segments of baseball and softball in this
area into the playoff stages it may be a good time to
stop for a moment and look back on this 1971 season as a
very important one, especially as far as minor baseball is
concerned in this district.
With various organizations as sponsoring bodies,
more youngsters had the opportunity this year to
partake in their favorite sport than they have for many a
year and probably ever,
Here in Exeter, baseball has been a dead issue for
quite a few years, but a newly formed Minor Baseball
Association took over and three clubs were entered in
the Western Ontario Athletic Association.
Pee wee, bantam and midget clubs performed this
year and they were decked out in new uniforms and
were able to use some brand new equipment thanks to
the Exeter Fastball Association that donated $400 to
the minor baseball cause.
The men that looked after the various duties of
manager and coach of the three clubs should certainly
be commended for spending a lot of time and energy in
helping the clubs get going.
The three Exeter clubs put up a good showing for
the first year back in business. The midget club lost out
to Listowel in the first round of WOAA playoffs but put
up a real battle.
According to the local coaches, the only reason
they lost out was because of the Listowel pitcher who
was almost unbeatable and is also a regular pitcher with
the Listowel intermediates.
It was also the same story in Crediton and
Dashwood with three minor clubs in action with most
of them compiling good records throughout the season.
In Crediton, the bantams and midgets won their
group and WOAA championships and are awaiting
further opposition in Ontario Baseball Association
playoffs.
The Dashwood situation is similar with the pee
wees and juveniles still in action for WOAA titles.
To everyone that has had a part in the rekindling
of minor baseball interest in this area we say a great big
"Thank you. 5
Big tourney
The big attraction as far as sports is concerned at
Lucan's Centennial celebrations will take place Saturday
with an all-day softball tournament.
Competing for good prize money will be clubs
from Lucan, Nairn, Sylvan, Parkhill, Lieury and
London.
Hawks fly away
When most of the Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "A" training camps open in early September no
less than seven members of last year's.Exeter Hawks will
be in attendance.
Last week we mentioned that Pete Glover was
heading to the London Knights, Randy Preszcator to
the Toronto Marlboros and John Hayter and Pete
Kleinstiver to the Niagara Falls Flyers.
Since that time we have learned that Joe
O'Rourke, Brian Bestard and Perry Stover will be trying
out with the Chatham Maroons.
We would like to wish everyone of the youngsters
the best of luck in their attempts to make the grade in
higher company.
Their success will certainly have a bearing on the
calibre of hockey that will be dished up by the Hawks
this year.
If most of them return to the Hawks, the local
club should have a good chance in grabbing the OHA
"D" championship which eluded them by only a single
goal in the 1970-71 final against the Haliburton Huskies.
Stepping up
One of the star players of the Brucefield Bombers
girls softball team over the past couple of years has been
chosen to play in the Canadian Senior ladies fastball
finals.
Sandra Graham, 17-year-old daughter of Mel and
Betty Graham of Stanley township was one of two
players picked up by the Kitchener Kieswetters,
all-Ontario champs.
The Kitchener club will represent Ontario in the
Canadian finals and also participate in a five day
tournament in Calgary later in the month.
Sandra is currently a member of the Milverton
Winstonettes, a senior ladies club.
Young NHL'er
We ran into an up and coming young NHL star at
an area wedding Saturday afternoon. He was Don Luce
who as traded during the off-season by the Detroit Red
Wings to the Buffalo Sabres.
Due to a lack of time we could only talk to Don
for a very few moments but we had the best Maple Leaf
fan in the Crediton area, Harvey Smith do a little
questioning for us.
Luce who played his junior hockey in St. Marys
and Kitchener said he was looking forward to playing
for Punch Imlach at Buffalo.
He feels that Boston, New York and Chicago are
the clubs to beat in the coming season and he named the
Ranger duo of Ed Giacomin and Gilles Villemure as the
best goal tenders in the big leagues.
