Crediton bantam club wins
district group championship
Last week we said the summer was quickly fading
and that statement becomes much more evident when
one hears all the talk of the approaching hockey season.
Saturday when we were in Lucan attending the
very successful Lucan Lions Fair we had a brief chat
with George English who is organizing an intermediate
"C" club to play in district Ontario Hockey Association
ranks this winter.
George already has his club working out each
Wednesday night at the Huron Park arena.
Then a few minutes later we ran into Steve Storey
who has been a driving force behind the Lucan-Ilderton
Jets ever since they were formed about three years ago.
We should add that Steve is a hard worker for the -lets
on and off the ice.
The Jets who left the playoff ranks last year due
to a Durham protest when they were attempting to gain
the OHA "B" championship for the second consecutive
year will be back again this season using the Huron Park
arena as their home base.
Storey told us Saturday that the Jets would
probably line up a very attractive exhibition schedule
for the season bringing in top flight competition.
Most of the clubs in last year's grouping including
the Elmira Polar Kings are apparently folding leaving the
Jets without a regular league to play in.
Taking into consideration the very weak
competition provided by most of the teams during last
season (with Durham excluded) we feel the Jets should
be popular in this area with a good brand of hockey
assured each time they step out on the ice.
It is expected teams from Delhi, Tillsonburg,
Aylmer and Simeoe will play the Lucan-Ilderton club in
home and home sets with some semi-pro clubs being
lined up for possible opposition.
On the junior scene here in Exeter, members of
the Hawk executive are busy formulating plans for the
corning season with one of the features being a bigger
and better program that will be on sale for customers
with lucky draws involved.
The last time we talked to coach Bob White he
had indicated he would be back as coach again this year.
The playing personnel here will not be definite
for quite a few weeks as at least four members of last
year's club that went to the Ontario "D" finals are
getting try-outs with Junior "A" clubs.
Sometime ago Randy Preszcator was drafted by
the Toronto Marlboros and Pete Glover was selected by
the London Knights to attend training camps early in
September.
Monday of this week, John Ryan the chief scout
of the Niagara Falls Flyers was in the area and signed
Dashwood youngsters John Hayter and Pete Kleinstiver
to try-out forms.
All four players are expected to start training
about the 9th of September.
We had the pleasure to listen in on some of the
conversation Ryan had with the two boys in question
and their fathers and were impressed with the set-up in
Niagara Falls.
Ryan said that Hap Emms who owns the club and
his son Paul who will likely handle the coaching duties
are strict disciplinarians. If the boys make the club, they
are provided with schooling and accommodations along
with weekly spending money.
Sports history, too
In another section of this issue is printed a short
history of the village of Lucan in connection with next
week's Centennial celebrations in the Irish town.
We will just briefly dwell on some of the sport
highlights in Lucan over the past 100 years.
Starting with baseball, we find the records show
that the Irish Nine toured various Western Ontario
centres in 1895. They travelled mainly by train but
occasionally by horse-drawn stagecoach.
On one occasion, the team played in Exeter in the
forenoon, drove to Goderich and played in the late
afternoon and stopped off at Clinton on the way home
the next day for another contest.
In 1895, the Irish Nine won 18 of 19 games,
losing only to St. Thomas.
The star team of the Lucan Irish came in 1902
when top teams in Canada and some from the United
States challenged the local players to games.
Probably the best game ever played in Lucan took
place on June 2, 1902 when the Irish edged the
University of Toronto 3-2 in 15 innings. The Varsity
manager was so impressed with the play of the Lucan
club that he induced two of the players Jesse Tripp and
Walter Gibson to play the next season in Toronto.
Other members of the 1902 club were Angus
George, Dick Hodgins, Cliff Murdy, Bob Fox, Billie
Tripp, Dr. Oscar Lang, Art Hawkshaw, Bill Hawkshaw,
Heber McFalls, Fred Smith and Jimmie Anderson.
The Irish Nine juniors, nicknamed the Muskegons
won the North Wellington league championship shortly
after the First World War. Members of the club were
Alden Stanley, Clare We'stman, Tom Filmor, Clarence
Chown, Howard Cranston, Murray Mara, Jim Whiteford,
Frank Smith, Rout Riddell and Morris Murdy.
The first hockey team operated in Lucan in the
early 1900's.
In 1953, the Lucan Irish won the WOAA "B" and
the OHA "C" championships with the following players
in the line-up: Ray Yelle, Jake Barnes, Fred Revington,
Leroy Revington, Herb Stretton, Norm and Jack Hardy,
Bob Watson, Ron Stevenson, Bill Smith, Glenn
Revington, Len Gaudette, Ed Rowett, Ken Kirkpatrick,
Bob Gallagher, Clayt Thompson, Ross McTavish and
Don McAlpine with Jim Freeman as coach.
The newest history of course is the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets winning the OHA "B" title in 1969-70.

The Dashwood Tigers were
eliminated from the Huron-Perth
league playoffs Sunday night as
they lost 17-14 to the Mitchell
BP's in a wild scoring contest
that lasted more than three and a
half hours,
After losing the first game of
the best-of-three series, a week
ago, the Tigers bounced back to
down the Mitchell club 4-1 in
Dashwood Friday night to extend
the series to the limit.
The Tigers are expected to
start play in the Ontario Baseball
Association "D" playoffs this
weekend. Their first round op-
position will be Tupperville from
the Western Counties league.
Although arrangements were
not completed at press time,
Dashwood manager Glenn Webb
said he hoped his club would play
the first game in Tupperville
sometime over this coming
weekend.
In final league statistics
released this week by Bert
Clifford of Clinton, Dashwood
pitcher Bob Webb and Bob
Parkinson of Mitchell were tied
for the most wins with seven
each. Webb led the league in
strike-outs with 70.
In the hitting department Pete
Ravelle of the Tigers finished
with a .396 average, John
Hayter followed with .348 and
Bob Hoffman was the only other
Tiger over .300 with final average
of .307.
Excellent performance
The Tigers came up with
probably their best performance
of the season Friday night as they
downed the BP's by a score of 4-1
to tie the final series at a game
apiece.
Dave Ratz turned in a top notch
pitching effort and his team-
mates backed with nearly perfect
fielding.
Ratz gave up only two hits and
allowed only six Mitchell batters
Competition keen
in lawn bowling
Keen competition continues in
the twice weekly jitneys staged
by members of the Exeter lawn
bowling club.
Tuesday night, Lizzie Lamport
and Bill Etherington finished in a
tie for first place with identical
records of two wins, a plus of 14
and aggregate of 28.
Jean Johns was third with a
plus of 10 and aggregate of 27 to
go with a double victory. Howard
Ince was third and Mabel Glenn
placed fourth.
Saturday night Tom Yellow
was the winner with two wins, a
plus of 13 and aggregate of 26, A
plus of 11 and 29 aggregate with
two victories gave Mabel
McKnight second spot.
Harold Simpson was third
while Ray Smith and Stella
Taylor were tied for fourth
position.
'A men's pairs tournament is
scheduled for the Exeter bowling
greens on August 25.

to reach the bases. Catcher
Laverne "Porky" Wallace
slammed a bases empty homer
with one out in the ninth to
produce the only Mitchell run of
the night.
Worden's single to open the
game and Ballantyne's double to
lead off in the sixth were the only
other hits the BP's were able to
garner off Ratz's slants,
The Dashwood left hander
retired the side in order in four
innings, faced only four batters in
four other frames and had to
throw to five of the opposition in
the first inning. The Tigers
reached the scoreboard in the
first inning when lead-off batter
Bob Hoffman doubled, moved up
on an error and scored on Pete
Ravelle's fielder's choice.
The second Dashwood score
came in the second stanza on
Pete Ravelle's double and a
single from the bat of Gord
Vincent.
Ravelle blasted a homer over
the left field fence to start the
Dashwood sixth and after the
next two batters were retired
Gord Vincent repeated with
another blast over the fence.
Other Dashwood hits were Jim
Hayter's single in the second and
a double delivered by Dave Ratz
in the seventh.
Ratz fanned nine Mitchell
batters while his mound opponent
Gil Deelen gained the same
number of strikeouts.
Different story
On the Mitchell diamond
Sunday night there was little
comparison to the game of
Friday night. Runs, hits and
errors were prevalent as the BP's
pulled out a 17-14 decision.
While the Mitchell club was
getting a total of 17 runs, they
were rattling three Dashwood
pitchers for the same number of
hits.
Mitchell scored three runs in
the first inning and were away
and running piling up a 16-8
margin after five complete in-
nings of play.
While the BP's added their last
run in the seventh the Tigers kept
battling and scored two in the
eighth and four final runs in the
ninth.
Don Vipond led the Mitchell
batting attack with four hits and
a hit batsman in five trips to the
plate for a perfect night.
Veterans George Coveney and
Porky Wallace aided their
Mitchell cause with a home run
each. •
Coveney started on the Mitchell
mound and gave up seven hits
over the first eight innings.
Wallace took over in the ninth
and despite giving up four runs
retired the side on strike-outs.
Bob Hoffman singled and
scored on a single from the bat
of Whitey Denomme for the first
Tiger score in the first inning.
Denomme's triple was
responsible for the second Dash-
wood marker in the third and
singles by Bill Schade and Jim
Hayter sent another single run
home in the fourth.
The Tigers best inning was in
the fifth when they scored five
times. Three walks and a hit
batsman helped them on their
way, John Hayter and Stan Lovie
singled for the only base hits
during the rally.
Bob Hoffman's single was the
only hit during a two-run Dash-
wood rally in the eighth and
singles by Jim Hayter and Bill
Schade along with a triple by Bob
Hoffman sent the final four runs
for the visitors home in the ninth.
Bob Webb was the starting
Dashwood pitcher with Bill
Schade taking over in the second
and Dave Ratz coming on in the
fifth to finish up.
