Dashwood outs Crediton It's back to work after the annual Civic Holiday Week Vacation and one begins to realize the summer is almost over. Most baseball and softball teams in the area are into playoffs, the football season is well underway and we hear lots of talk about hockey training camps starting in less than a month, We have only one comment on our holidays in addition to being a very enjoyable one. It was too short. good year, too While all the talk in recent weeks on the baseball front has surrounded the pitching performances of Vida Blue and Fergie Jenkins, one other top notch hurler is being sort of overlooked. He is the unassuming left hamlet of the Detroit Tigers, Mickey Lolich. Sunday, Lolich notched his 18th win of the season and should also be on the way to a 20-game season. We aren't trying to take a thing away from Blue, who is having an outstanding season in his first year with Oakland but one season doesn't necessarily mean he will develop into a super pitcher. Fergie Jenkins said only recently, he didn't figure he had it made as top notch big league hurler until he had won 100 games. Fergie Jenkins has proved over the past five years and particularly this year that he is the best baseball pitcher ever produced in the Dominion of Canada. Jenkins in his fifth full year with the Chicago Cubs is well on his way to being the winningest pitcher in the National baseball league. The big strong right hander from Chatham has.18 wins to his credit when this was written and should without question become a 20-game winner for the fifth consecutive year. Fergie started out with 20 wins in each of 1967 and 1968, moved to 21 victories in 1969 and pushed his one year record to 22 wins last year. His strike-out total is also the highest in the senior circuit and is getting close to 200 right now. In a game against the Montreal Expos shown on television last week Jenkins showed he is a complete ball player as he came up with three hits and several runs batted in to help his own cause in an easy victory over the Montrealers. He also showed a lot of hustle and desire on the base paths. Unlike- a lot of pitchers, Fergie went from first to third on a single and went in the hot corner with a good slide. Jenkins showed the same attitude Saturday when he tossed his, helmet to the ground after striking out in the game in which he went on to gain his 18th victory. For this bit of temper he was fined $100 by plate umpire Ed Sudol in a reverse decision after apparently being tossed out of the game. Over the years there have been some good pitchers go south from our country to make good in the big leagues but it will be a long time before one as good as Fergie is produced, Before Jenkins came along the best Canadian pitchers have been Oscar "Lefty" Judd, Phil Marchildon, Dick Fowler, Joe Kraskauskas, Ron Taylor, Claude Raymond, John Hiller and Mike Kilkenny. Good sports show The Canadian National Exhibition opens in Toronto next week and will again feature a top notch slate of sporting events. Billed as the greatest show on water, "Aquarama 1971" will be featured on the waterfront everyday of the exhibition from August 19 to September 16. All seats for this show are free, Opening day, August 19, an all-star boxing card will be staged along with a CFL football game between the Toronto Argos and the Ottawa Roughriders and from then on it's a different sport almost everyday. Included on the list are judo, baseball, softball, fencing, karate, gymnastics, weight-lifting, table tennis, wrestling, lacrosse, horseshow pitching, outboard motor boat races, a Lake Ontario dog swim and a canoe splash. August 28 will feature a football clinic and kicking contest with Argo kicking specialist Dave Mann in charge. The Philadelphia Hobos softball team will be in for three days, August 26-28 and Eddie Feigner and his renowned four-man softball team will be in for three days, September 2,3,4. Also appearing will be the Tramp Champs who performed very successfully at the Kirkton Garden Party a couple of weeks ago. Tickets on sale When we said at the outset that the summer was fast fading away we failed to realize that the annual Midwestern rodeo here in Exeter is only a little more than three weeks away. Rodeo committee secretary Dalton Finkbeiner tells us that advance tickets for the rodeo that will be held on Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5 will go on sale at the town clerk's office Monday morning of next week. Officials are planning a bigger and better show for this year. Pee wees lead final The Exeter pee wees came up with a good performance Friday night in downing Goderich 7-2 in the first game of a best-of-three series for the Western Ontario Athletic Association pee wee "B" championship. The date of the return game in Goderich was not set at press time, Wednesday. A five run Exeter rally that started after one was out in the bottom of the sixth inning was responsible for the opening playoff victory. Goderich scored their only two runs of the game in the top of the second without the aid of a hit. Exeter bounced back with a single run in the bottom of the same frame and tied the score with another lone run in the third. In the second Jeff Davis was hit The Dashwood pee wees won their Western Ontario Athletic Association group championship Monday night by downing Creditors by a Score of 29-7. It was the first game of a best- of-three series, but the Crediton club conceded after Monday's game and pashwood will now move on to meet Belgrave in the next round. Doug Mclsaac, Wayne Clarke — Please turn to Page 7 by a pitch and came around to Score as Paul Brooks reached the vases on an error. Mike Dougherty walked and scored on a single from the bat of Min Gregus in the third. With the score tied at 2-2 the Exeter bats started to boom in the sixth inning, With one out, Morley Obre and Ken Pinder singled and Jim Webb cracked a double to score both runners. Jeff Davis and Paul Brooks were safe on errors with Webb scoring and the last two runs crossed the plate as the result of Perry Pooley's single. The only two Goderich hits given up by Exeter hurler Ken Pinder came in the sixth inning but failed to produce a run, With a healthy lead, Pinder struck out the side in the Goderich half of the seventh to end the game.
