In nine months each had grown
from two microscopic cells to
some 26 trillion cells. No man-
made object can compare with a
baby's construction, and it has
the most baffling, highly
developed mechanism on earth.
And you say the age of miracles
is past . . thick again.
After viewing the babies for as
long as the rules allowed we went
to our daughter's room and
marvelled at the fact that 'our

telligent looking one of the lot,
It was really amazing, we said,
while the other babies were nice,
none of them had such a pink and
white complexion, none had
shown such mature emotion by
sticking out their tongues the way
she had, and not one of them bad
folded their hands under their
chins in the clever fashion she
had,
No doubt about it . , . she was
certainly exceptional.
Driving home later in the day I
was still daydreaming about the
dear little thing when I stole a
glance at my husband. He had a
smug, far away look on his face,
It struck me there was
something different about his
appearance.
The light dawned, "Why, he's a
grandfather . . . and isn't it a
fright how he's aged?
"My Stars," I muttered to
myself, "Look at his grey hair
(what's left of it), those crows
feet and sagging muscles!"
"Certainly am glad I'm not
falling apart like that," I thought
thankfully as I pulled in my
stomach and adjusted my wig.
I put on my glasses so I could
see him better,
It was true, There he was a
balding, aging, greying grand-
father.
I tell you it was shocking.
However, after I got to thinking
about it awhile I began to see
being married to a grandfather
wasn't so bad, It's just one more
thing that Jackie Onassis and I
have in common . . . besides our
beauty and great figures, that is!

FUTURE SEAMSTRESSES — Taking advantage of the summer course

dancing, Monday afternoon.
Wednesday afternoon's ac-
tivities were held on the lawn this
week with several outdoor games
played and well over 100
residents taking part.
Pastor Bigelow of Bayfield,
Baptist Church, led the Family
Night program held in the
auditorium last Thursday
evening. The musical numbers
introduced by Mr. Bigelow in-
cluded ladies duet by Mrs.
Chapman and Louise Talbot;
accordion solo by Shirley Keys;
vocal solo by Mrs. Bigelow;
numbers by the chorus and a
singsong led by Mrs. Chapman.
Also a reading by Nancy
Tawcett.
It was decided to have a band
concert on the lawn if possible
each Thursday evening in July
and August.
Potatoes are of particular
interest to the outdoor cook for to
many, no meal is complete
without a potato. For faster
cooking, use leftover potatoes or
potatoes precooked until they are
almost tender. The precooked
potato heats through in 20 to 30
minutes, while the raw potato
takes about an hour.
Place bundles of vegetables on
the grill or in and around the
ashes. Turn once or twice during
cooking. Potatoes can be tested
for tenderness by piercing
through the foil with a long
.pronged fork. Other vegetables
may be tested this way or a single
bundle can be opened for testing.
The cooking times will vary with
the vegetable and the size of
bundle. Allow plenty of time for,
cooking vegetables -•-at least 20
to 45 minutes.
minutes total cooking time.
There are a wide variety of
sauces a`nd marinades that
complement the mild flavor of
chicken. Suggested basting
sauces include; melted butter
combined with crushed garlic, or
lemon and honey, or herbs such
as thyme, oregano, rosemary,
marjoram, savory, tarragon or
bay leaf. Barbecue sauces, sweet
and sour sauce, or even French
or Italian salad dressing, will
create special chicken flavor
favorites.
BARBECUED CHICKEN
Chicken pieces or chicken
halves are tender, mild flavored
and versatile, cooked over the
coals of a barbecue. Tender
young fryers or broilers weighing
21 4 to 13 pounds, quartered or
halved, are best suited for grill
cooking.
Before starting to barbecue, be
sure the coals are covered with a
white, powdery ash and the grill
is 6 to 12 inches above the coals to
give a medium heat. Brush the
chicken with melted fat.
Place the pieces on the greased
grill, skin side up. The skin side
scorches easily and should be
kept down no more than 3
minutes at a time. Turn the
pieces every 3 to 5 minutes with
long-handled tongs and baste
frequently. Total cooking time
will be 40 to 60 minutes.
There is a special method for
barbecuing chicken breasts
resulting in exceptionally juicy
and deliciouS meat. The success
depends on the cooking. Brush
the breasts liberally with melted
fat and place on the grill over hot
coals. Turn frequently. At a grill
temperature of 375 degrees, they
will require about 20 to 25

BARBECUE VEGETABLES
Most vegetables are suited to
the barbecue. Potatoes (diced,
sliced or whole), shredded peeled
beets, sliced carrots, sliced or
whole mushrooms, small whole
or sliced onions, corn or any
combination of these vegetables,
barbecue well. All they need is a
sprinkling of salt, a twist of the
pepper grinder,plenty of butter,
foil wrapping, and they are ready
to cook on the grill. For cooking
vegetables in the coals use a
double thickness of foil.

Twenty-five years ago I used to
say I was sure I could get through
life withopt children, but I
thought a grandchild or two
would be handy to comfort me in
my old age,
Since, even in this age of
wonders, there seems no way to
bypass the troublesome business
of raising youngsters to attain
grandchildren we went into the
business quite seriously and had
four.
Last weekend it paid off . . the
first comforter of our golden
years arrived in the form of a
baby girl.
It was an awesome and spine-
tingling experience to press one's
nose against the nursery glass to
view that infinitely tiny, beautiful
bit of humanity, perfect in every
way and already a person in her
own right.
I suppose I must have been
unusually quiet because my son-
in-law said, "Well, how do you
feel?"
Swallowing the lump in my
throat I could only say, "Proud,
mighty proud."
When I finally tore my eyes off
the face of our little one I looked
over the contents in the other
baskets. There they were . . a
dozen brand new citizens for our
great wide wonderful world,
Some were sleeping con-
tentedly, others stirred, stret-
ched, yawned and grimaced as if
they were bored with the whole
thing already, while a few others
protested lustily with flailing
arms and legs and looked so
tough you'd swear they'd been
here before!
God bless their little hearts.
Every one of them had just
passed through a cataclysmic
experience . . that of beginning.
They had each made a lift off
more complex than a Cape
Kennedy launching. With all
systems go they had lost all
contact with their control bases,
their mothers.
For nine months their universe
had been silent, dark, warm, wet
and gently rocking. Suddenly,
they were thrust into a world that
was bright, cold, hard, dry and
noisy.
As if that wasn't enough they
were immediately slapped on
their backsides. No longer could
they hear the comforting sound of
their mother's heartbeats and
they had experienced, for the
first time, the awful sensation of

Prayer was the theme taken by
Mrs, Marjorie Steeper for the
short devotional period of the
July meeting which was held in
the church basement. The
opening thought was, "More
things are wrought by prayer
than this world knows of."
The scripture was read by Mrs,
Fenton and a poem "The time for
Prayer" was also read.
