Meet Mitchell Friday in crucial test
Tigers in contention for H-P top spot
The Dashwood athletic field
will be the scene of an important
ball game Friday night at eight
o'clock when the Dashwood
Tigers and the Mitchell BP's
meet in a regularly scheduled
Huron-Perth league contest.
A win for the Tigers in Friday's
game would put them in sole
possession of first place in the
league standings.
At the moment Mitchell is in
first place with ten wins and four
losses while Dashwood has nine
victories and the same number of
defeats.
Arva is in third place with eight
wins in 13 starts while the Clinton
Colts are fourth with six wins and
a tie, also in 13 games. Thorndale
follows in fifth spot with six wins
and seven losses while the cellar
inning pitching distance for
Exeter and was touched for a
total of seven hits.
Lets of hits
Ken Pinder was. the winning
pitcher in Sunday's 11-5 triumph
over Goderich while his mates
broke loose with a 17-hit attack.
Jeff Davis was the top local
batsman with three safeties in
four official trips to the plate.
Getting two hits apiece were
Randy Fisher, Morley Obre, Ken
Pinder, Greg Beattie, Jim Webb
and Mike Dougherty, Perry
Pooley and Fred Robinson each
collected one hit,
In the losing cause against
Clinton, Wednesday 'singles by
Jim Webb and Fred Robinson
sent one Exeter run home in the
second inning and another scored
in the third on hits by Jim Gregus
and Webb.
The final three Exeter markers
came in the fourth on two walks,
an error and singles from the
bats of Jeff Davis and Perry
Pooley.
The Exeter peewees lost two-of
three Western Ontario Athletic
games played over the past week
to bring their season record to
five wins and six losses..
Wednesday in Exeter, the
locals were downed 17-5 by
Clinton, Friday, also on their
home diamond they downed
Goderich 1.1-5 and Sunday af-
ternoon in Belgraye they were
edged 5-4.
Sunday, f1elgrave scored two
runs in the second inning and
finished with a three run rally in
the fifth while Exeter notched a
single run in the third and came
close with three more markers in
the sixth.
Morley Obre singled and
scored on Fred Robinson's single
for the first Exeter run in the
third.
Fred Robinson beat out a bunt
to start the Exeter sixth and
scored on Ken Pinder's double.
Jim Webb followed with a walk
and scored along with Pinder on
Laurie Skinner's two-bagger.
Ken Finder went the full seven
dwelling St. Marys club has only
a tie to show in 14 games.
During the past week, the
Tigers recorded a pair of vic-
tories. They trounced St. Marys
14-1 on the Dashwood diamond
Friday night and took a 14-8
decision in Thorndale, Monday
night,
Four hits produced only one
Dashwood run in the fifth when
several runners were cut down.
Jim Hayter opened the inning
with a double and promptly
scored on a similar hit from the
bat of Bob Hoffman. Hoffman
was then picked off second. Pete
Ravelle and Stan Lovie followed
with singles but Ravelle was
thrown out at the plate on Whitey
Denomme's grounder to end the
inning,
Dave Ratz doubled and scored
on Bob Hoffman's single for the
fifth Dashwood run in the sixth.
In the seventh, five hits, all
singles from the bats of Dave
Ratz, Bud Desjardine, Whitey
Denomme, Stan Lovie and Jim
Hayter accounted for a five run
splurge.
The eighth inning saw a slight
change with four hits sending five

Bantams win exhibition,

The Exeter bantams thumped
Seaforth 26-4 Wednesday night in
an exhibition game and suc-
cumbed to Crediton by 12-8
Sunday in regular Western
Ontario Athletic Association
play.
Brian Taylor with six hits in the
same number of trips to the plate
led the Exeter batting attack in
the win over Seaforth.
Next in line with three hits
apiece were Kevin Windsor and
Pool
splashes
With all summer sporting activities well underway
we are very safe in saying that more district youngsters
have an opportunity to partake of various recreation
activities than they ever had.
Right in Exeter, the swimming program at the
Exeter and district pool has been broken into two sections
for the second year giving every youngster a full
opportunity to participate. The divided program gives
boys and girls going on holidays with parents a chance to
pick their spot for swimming lessons.
At Victoria Park, the five to seven year-olds are
enjoying an active playground program with. the wading
pool being the big drawing card.
A chlorinator has been installed at the pool making
it a safe, healthy spot for the youngest boys and girls to
enjoy.
The softball and baseball programs throughout the
district are also more ambitious than ever.
Locally, the Exeter minor ball association has pee
wee, bantam and midget clubs entered in the WOAA along
with a pee wee house league operating every Saturday
morning at Exeter Community Park.
In Crediton, it's the same story with WOAA
representation in pee wee, bantam and midget baseball
ranks,
Dashwood also has an ambitious baseball set-up
with three minor clubs in addition to the intermediate
Tigers using the newly renovated Dashwood athletic field.
A new clubhouse with dressing rooms and wash
rooms is just being completed. It was partly financed by
the incentive works program of Stephen township.
Proceeds from last week's successful Friedsburg
Days will pour more than $2,000 into the athletic field
improvement project.
Two weeks ago, softball parks at Kirkton and
Lieury received financial aid from the provincial
government for improvements to their parks.
At Kirkton, the minister of Agriculture, the Hon.
W. A. Stewart officially opened the new lighted park.
Only weeks before that time a grant was received for the
installation of the floodlights.
The McGillivray township park at Lieury has
undergone an extensive face lifting with a new lighting
system and new entrance to name only a few of the
changes.
Lighted ball fields are also in operation at Hensall
and Lucan in addition to Huron Park giving a lot of
athletes of all ages an opportunity to engage in their
favorite summer pastime.
At Hensall, that village has an entry in the Exeter
and district Rec softball league and the Brucefield
Bombers also use the diamond for Huron ladies softball
play.
Quite a change
What a difference a year or two makes: That
statement can certainly be applied to the current situation
of Washington Senator pitcher Denny McLain.
Back in 1968 when the Detroit Tigers won the
American League pennant and went on to edge the St.
Louis Cardinals in the World Series, McLain won 30 games
during the regular season.
Now with the Senators it would not be stretching
the imagination too far to suggest McLain could become
infamous this year by losing the same number of games
(30).
A cooling spot
If the hot weather continues for the next couple of
weeks we know of a spot where area residents could cool
off for a few minutes and enjoy some sports action.
The Canadian hockey and sport training camp opens
at the Huron Park arena, Monday morning of next week.
This year the camp will be of three weeks duration
and will conclude on Saturday, August 7. In. addition to
full instruction in hockey fundamentals, teaching is being
provided in power skating, baseball and soccer.
Paul Roach, now a scout with the Buffalo Sabres of
the National hockey league is the director of the camp and
a full list of qualified and knowledgeable hockey coaches
will be on hand to assist with the instruction.
Included on the coaching staff is Ron Mason,
varsity hockey coach at Lake Superior State College at
Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. This is the university where
Dashwood native Jim Hayter spent the last term.
Mason is well known in this area as he spent his
junior playing days at Seaforth.
Others teaching will be Bill Hayward, the power
skating specialist of the Toronto Maple Leafs; Evans
Tannis, soccer coach at St. Michael's in Toronto; Jack
Costello, St. Clair College, Windsor and Brian Gilmour
from McGill University in Montreal.
Danny Brintnell while John.
Wuerth, Dan McIver and Dan
Crerar chipped in with a pair of
safeties each. Getting one hit
were Noel Skinner, Bill Baker,
and Dave Lovell.
Dan, Crerar was the starting
pitcher for Exeter with John
Wuerth taking over in relief in the
third frame.
The majority of scoring in the
game against Crediton took place
in' the early innings. Exeter
scored two runs in each of the
first and third frames and added
four more in the fourth.
Crediton replied with three
runs in the first frame, added a
half dozen in the second and
notched single markers in the
third, fourth and sixth.
A double by Bill Baker and
Kevin, Windsor's single scored
the first two Exeter runs while
Baker and Bill Wilson singled to
score two more Exeter markers
in the fourth.
Hits by Kevin Windsor, John
Wuerth, Bill Wilson and Dan
McIver sent the final four Exeter
runs home in the fourth.
Pitcher Larry Clarke's home
run was the big blow of the three-
run Crediton first. Others hitting
safely were Keith Davey and Ron
Bowers.
Ron Smith„ Roger Finkbeiner
and Keith Davey hit safely during
the six run Crediton uprising in
the second inning.
Clarke was the winning pitcher
for Crediton while Dan r Crerar
and John Wuerth shared hurling
duties for Exeter.
By DONNA DOIDGE
The confusion of the first week
of lessons is over and we have
settled down into a busy routine
of water work. The children have
three weeks of lessons left as
their examination date is August
2.
On Tuesday of this week it was
very cold and miserable early in
the morning. The younger
children were not put into the
water because they chill so
easily. Their lessons were held in
the dressing rooms learning
water safety.
Mothers are asked to remind
their children to wear their shoes
to the pool as we have taken two
children to the hospital this week
with large cuts on their feet. They
received medical care and
consequently will miss water
exercises for a week.
Adult lessons are progressing
very fast and very well. The adult
swimming hour on Tuesday and
Thursday will cease after this
week if participation does not
increase.
Same style
Against Thorndale, Monday
night, the Tigers used their
patented come-from-behind
pattern to gain a 14-8 win.
Thorndale opened with a five
run rally in the first inning and
the Tigers were in their usual
position. This time it didn't take
them long to recover as they
tied the score in their half of the
second inning and broke loose
with a six run rally in the fourth
to go ahead to stay,
John Hayter's double and
singles from the bats of Gord
Vincent, Dave Ratz, Pete Ravelle
and Gary Hartman sent the first
five Dashwood runners across
the plate.
In the fourth it was again a
double and four singles that
produced the Dashwood scoring
power. Pete Ravelle rapped the
two-bagger while John Hayter,
Bob Hoffman, Gord Vincent and
Gary Hartman connected for the
singles.
The final three Dashwood runs
in the sixth were accomplished on
John Hayter's single along with a
couple of Thorndale errors and a
pair of walks.
Gary Hartman, up from the
Dashwood juveniles got two hits
in three tries in his first in-
termediate start.
Bob Webb went the distance on
the mound for the Tigers and
picked up his sixth consecutive
pitching win without a loss. Webb
gave up only seven hits over the
nine inning route and was in
trouble only in the first and
seventh frames when all the
Thorndale scoring took place.
Webb chalked up 11 strikeouts
to run his season total to 51, the
best fanning record in the league.
Easy win
Lefty Dave Ratz had an easy
time in picking up his first win of
the season for the Tigers as he
held St. Marys to only seven hits
as Dashwood won 14-1.
Ratz was particularly effective
in the first two innings when the
first batter reached base safely
and he was able to get the next
three batters in order.
The Tiger hitting attack which
reached 18 hits, didn't really
break out until the third inning
when they scored three times,
Pete Ravelle's two-out homer
with Bob Hoffman and Gord
Vincent aboard took care of the
third inning counting.
The Exeter all-stars broke
loose with plenty of hitting power
as they swamped Lieury 15-2 in
an exhibition softball game at the
Exeter diamond, Sunday night.
This was the second of a two
game series, Lieury winning 7-3
in Dashwood last week.
The two clubs will be back at it
on Saturday night, July 24 at 9
p.m. at the McGillivray township
park at Lieury.
The combination of long ball
hitting and the effective pitching
of Jim Johnston and Don
Pickering contributed to the
Exeter win.
Johnston went the first four
innings and gave up one run and
four hits, all coining in the first
inning.
Pickering finished up and faced
only 16 batters in five innings.
The only Lieury player to reach
base against the offerings of
Pickering was Gary Leger who
was on an error and scored on
another wild throw in the ninth.
The Exeter club scored 15 runs
on the same number of hits off
usually hard throwing Bob
Robinson.
The local all-stars scored seven
times in the seventh inning to
ensure victory. Jim Russell and
Doug McArthur each slammed
long home runs during the big
rally.
Other hits in the Exeter
seventh were doubles by Don
Pickering, Jim Pfaff and
Baynham and a single from the
bat of Bill Farquhar.
Four Exeter runs came across
the plate in the third with Jack
Glover's triple, Barry
Baynham's double and singles by
Rick Schilbe and Gerry Finnen
doing the damage.
Junior golf club set
A junior boys gold club has
been formed at the Exeter golf
course.
At the first session Monday
night an executive was named.
Paul McKnight is the president
with Richard Ottewell handling
the combined duties of secretary-
treasurer,
A tournament committee in.
eludes Ian Johnston, John Vriese
and Jim Hearn.
About 20 members now belong
to the club arid new members are
welcome at any time.
An "A" flight is planned for
high school and university
students with a "B" section for
boys 14 years of age and under.
Tournaments are being
planned with other Western
Ontario clubs.
