Western Ontario farm crops
wilting under prolonged hot, dry
weather got a tremendous lift
Monday afternoon and evening
when close to one inch of rain fell
in most communities.
Officials at the Ontario
Department of Agriculture office
in Clinton said the rain was most
needed in the Exeter and
Brucefield areas, especially for
white bean crops.
Other parts of the county had
fairly adequate soil moisture
reserves despite the lack of rain
and continuous hot and humid
weather.
"The Monday rains were most
helpful," said Jack Urquhart,
manager of the Exeter plant of
usEDHAYINGEQUIPMENT
The local Canners manager
said the rain did wonders for the
corn crop, "It has shot up since
Monday and the color is the best I
have ever seen,"
Canadian Canners. "It will
certainly help our late plantings
of peas."
Urquhart said a small one-third
of the pea crop has been har-
vested with a yield he described
as "slightly above average".
A small problem encountered
in some hay fields in Huron
County has corrected itself ac-
cording to Huron's assistant Ag
Rep Mike Miller.
Miller told the T-A Wednesday
morning that danger from
alfalfa weevil has passed. "The
damaging part of the life cycle of
the weevil is over for this year
and it won't bother second cut-
tings of hay," he added. "But it
will be back again next year."
