The Blyth youngsters scored in
every inning but one in hanging
up the 21-6 win over Exeter.
The first three Exeter runs
came in the second when Morley
Obre doubled and singles were
produced by Ken Pinder and
Greg Beattie.
Fred Robinson doubled and
scored on Perry Pooley's single
for the fourth Exeter run in the
third inning, Jim Gregus tripled
to score another marker in the
fifth and Jim Webb crashed a
bases empty homer in the sixth to
complete the Exeter scoring.
Ken Pinder and Perry Pooley

duties.
We made mention last week in this column of the
junior track and field workshop being held shortly at
South Huron District High school but would like to
elaborate a little more on it this week.
The R.E. Pooley Exeter branch of the Royal
Canadian Legion should be commended for their part of
giving local sponsorship to the two-day event.
The Legion is well known throughout Ontario for
sponsoring and developing track and field stars and hold
many clinics throughout the year.
This is the first time that one of these clinics or
workshops has been held in this area and we would hope
that district youngsters will attend in great numbers.
It will be held at the athletic field of South Huron
District High School next Monday and Tuesday nights
with each session getting underway at six o'clock and
running for about two and a half hours.
South Huron's track and field coach Doug Ellison
is in charge of local arrangements. Doug told us Tuesday
morning that he has received some response to the ad
that was run in this paper last week.
While the original ad listed the workshop being
open to boys and girls from 10 to 15 years of age,
Ellison emphasizes the fact that youngsters up to 18
will be more than welcome.
The workshop is being sponsored by the Legion
with the co-operation of the Youth and Recreation
branch of the Ontario Department of Education.
The purpose of the program is to expand interest
and participation in track and field at the junior level
and stimulate the formation of new clubs.
Carefully selected teams of demonstrators are
conducting these workshops at the junior level in many
Ontario centres from now until August 20. The teams
will include, specialists in each event and their expertise
is intended to supplement the knowledge of local
coaches.
Throughout the program, at the workshops and
meets, the demonstrators will be on the lookout for
promising young competitors.
One hundred athletes will be invited to Camp
Borden at the end of August for an eight-day session of
concentrated track and field training. •
Apart from providing their own transportation to
and from Camp Borden, there will be no further
expense to the athletes.
Any district youngsters wishing to participate in
the local track and field clinic should give Doug Ellison
a call at 235-1772 as soon as possible.
New Hall of Famers
At the June meeting of the Hockey Hall of Fame
selection committee, five more names were added to the
Hockey Hall of Fame.
Arthur Wirtz, long-time owner of the Chicago
Black Hawks was named to the builders section while
the newly named players were the late Harvey "Bucher"
Jackson, the late Terry Sawchuck, Dr. Gordon Roberts
and Cooney Weiland.
The last mentioned Weiland is a native of
Egmondville and just recently retired as head hockey
coach at Harvard University after spending a very
successful playing career with the Boston Bruins.
Ready for tourney
The Exeter fastball all-stars are busy preparing for
the annual Civic Holiday tournament to be staged at
Exeter Community Park on Monday, August 2.
In an exhibition game Saturday night at
Dashwood during Friedsburg Days celebrations, the
locals were edged 7-3 by Lieury.
A return game has been scheduled for the Exeter
diamond Sunday night at eight o'clock.
Ed Hearn, one of the organizers of the August 2
tourney reports that seven teams are definitely entered
with the eighth club to be named shortly.
All set to go in addition to the Exeter team will
be Breslau, Bridgeport, Goderich, Shedden, Ingersoll
and Sturdy Towing of London.
Ideas from the fans
During his illustrious and sometimes hectic
coaching career Punch Imlach has been known to come
up with new innovations.
Just recently management of the Buffalo Sabres
sent out a questionnaire to all season ticket holders
asking for their suggestions in improving conditions at
the rink or ideas for bettering the ice entertainment.
The response from the Sabre fans was terrific and
some unusual suggestions were included. One was to
install theatre-size screens at each end of the arena to
show instant replays. Another (from a male fan) was to
employ usherettes instead of the male ushers that have
been working at Memorial Auditorium.
