for Tigers in Huron-Perth
Our congratulations go out to Jane Smith of
Hensall who was recently named Pinto Queen by the
Ontario Maple Leaf Pinto Association.
Jane, a member of the Exeter saddle club will be
representing Ontario in a national Queen contest at Des
Moines, Iowa from July 15-17. Girls from most states in
the U.S. and some of the western Canadian provinces
will be contesting the North American Pinto queen title.
A pinto show will be held this Sunday afternoon
at Exeter Community park with all proceeds going to
finance Jane's trip to the national contest.
While points and ribbons will be handed out in
the Sunday show, prize monies will be eliminated in
order to obtain more proceeds for the trip.
Jane will be accompanied south by Janet
McDowell of Centralia. Her horse Kachina is being
vanned to Iowa for use in the show.
The girls will be judged on riding ability, poise,
beauty and personality.
Lots of bait
One of the most enthusiastic fishermen in this
area will have no trouble with having enough bait for
fishing for a long time.
Early this spring Ted Pooley imported about
1,700 African night crawlers from Florida.
We visited the Pooley residence early this week to
have a look at his worm family and he has them by the
thousands.
Pooley estimates his original 1,700 worms have
now multiplied to more than five thousand. With an
uneducated guess we would suggest his estimate is still
low as he has the crawlers of all sizes.
The African crawlers are ideal for Canadian
fishing trips as they like very hot weather. In fact, the
temperature in the Pooley "worm room" is kept
constantly at 84 degrees.
The worms are kept in a bedding of peat moss
and paper. The main food required is oatmeal and Ted
has devised a new method of feeding. He spreads the
oatmeal on a wire screening and the worms come up to
feed. This keeps the oatmeal from mixing with the
bedding and can be disposed of easily if it becomes too
old.
We will be waiting to hear of the excellent fishing
results obtained with African night crawlers.
Incidentally Ted has plenty of his fishing delicacies in
the 10-12 inch range ready for sale.
An interesting visit
During the summer months, people are always
looking for places to go on the weekends to spend some
liesure time.
We would recommend a trip to the Grand Bend
zoo for persons of all ages.
While it doesn't rival the city zoos, the Pineridge
zoo, located two-and-a-half miles south of Grand Bend
on the east side of Highway 21 has enough animals and
birds to occupy one's time for a couple of hours.
Starting from a hobby of about eight years ago
with a few wild ducks and geese, Ted Relouw now has
more than thirty different varieties of animals and birds
of all sizes.
He is constantly buying and trading with United
States and Canadian dealers and zoos and is also
importing from South America.
The slogan of the Pineridge zoo is 'something
different every visit."
The zoo grounds located on 24 acres of wooded
area are ideal for this type of venture with plenty of
shade provided for spectators, which is especially
welcome on warm days.
Close to home
While speaking of places to go for relaxation,
there is a spot still closer that is ideal for picnics and just
taking it easy.
The Exeter Riverview Park area is being improved
and extended a bit each year providing more facilities
for recreation and picnicking.
Alvin Willert and his recreation staff are doing a
wonderful job in keeping the park in a beautiful
condition.
The Exeter Lions club is also putting a lot of
work into developing the area to the east of the river
towards the curling club.
Picnic tables are also being placed in this area. In
our opinion this makes an ideal spot for a picnic with a
beautiful view of the rest of the park to the west
available.
Sets north records
We received a letter last week from Rainy River,
Ontario listing the accomplishments of a young girl
athlete with connections in this area.
Dale Desjardine, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Ches Desjardine of Rainy River won the midget girls
championship at the North Western Ontario Secondary
School Association track and field meet held recently at
Thunder Bay.
Dale who is the granddaughter of Mrs. Mabel
Desjardine, Dashwood and W. F. Jennison, Grand Bend
won the 100, 200 and 400 . metre dashes, breaking
existing records in two of the events.
She also combined with three other girls to take
the 440-yard relay in 55.3 seconds, a record for
Northwestern Ontario.
