HIGH SCHOOL • (1011 Sandy Elliot of Exeter has good reason for carefully scanning the sports section of the newspapers and listening and watching sports broadcasts on radio and television. The Exeter resident's grandson Howard Elliot of Chatham is making a big name for himself and Canada in the professional field of drag racing. Sponsored by his father, Howard, also a former Exeter resident, John Elliot is racking up wins throughout Canada and the U.S. and is currently the paints leader in the National Hot Rod Association. John is the junior member of the Sandy Elliot Std, sponsored team. His partner, Barrie Poole, is the first Canadian to ever win a major drag racing competition and that was in Pomona, California a few years back, John 21, is the son of Howard Elliot and the former Geraldine Armstrong of Exeter. His grandmother, Mrs. Helen Armstrong also resides in Exeter. The racing team is often dubbed the "Border Bandits" because of the large number of trophies they win away from their U.S. counterparts. Both were named super stock drivers of the year in 1970 by the Super Stock Magazine - the first time the honor went to two men, During the first part of 1970, John Elliot and Barrie Poole threatened to take Super Stock Eliminator back to Canada with them and hide it forever. Poole won the Winternationals and then Elliot came right back to win Dallas. And but for a late season charge by Ron Mancini and Ray Allen, Super Stock trophies would have undoubtedly all found their way to the north. Although Ford has yet to record a win record similar to GM or Chrysler, racers like Elliot have kept the "Better Idea" brand in the headlines con- sistently. Always a Ford fan, Elliot made his initial trip down a quarter- mile in a 1966 Mustang at St Thomas Dragway. From then on he was hooked on the drags - and Ford, It didn't take too long for the enterprising youth to get going as he won the A-SA class titles at the 1968 Windernationals and Nationals in a Comet and then made it to the semi-finals in Stock Eliminator at the World Finals that year. He was also the Division III Points Leader and a record holder for over a season, Running out of Sandy Elliot Ltd., he and teammate Barrie Poole proceeded to pick apart the American competition methodically and Elliot recorded a B-SA win ' at the 1969 Win- ternationals, won SS-GA at the Springnationals, and was low qualifier for the class at the Nationals. And except for one week during that year, he was the e.t. record holder at 11.70, and was the youngest driver to hold a Super Stock mark. Elliot's victory at the Springnationals was particularly significant in the light of the intense competition that was present at the event, despite the advent of the Pro Stockers, which was supposed to take a little away from the "handicapped- start" versions of Muscle Cars. Only one AMX made the first round and Elliot eliminated that entry of George Warren in the first round. He then 'beat the ladies' favorite, Judy Lilly in round two, and then turned the tables on his own teammate Poole in the semi's. His final round opponentwasas tough as they come since it was Bob Lambeck, the perennial points winner from Division VII. Elliot took care of him too, just as he done to all the rest, as he ripped off a great 11.29 to dispose of the MoPar, Unlike a number of other super stock drivers who have forsaken the ranks for the rich lure of pro stock, Elliot and Poole have wisely decided to maintain their pair of Mustangs, in search of more gold, handicap style. The pair has revealed a new Pro Stocker just a few weeks ago, and with twice as many brackets to compete in now, they could be double trouble! JOHN ELLIOTT Pee wees drop pair of games The Exeter pee wees were on the losing end of a pair of Western Ontario Athletic Association baseball games over the past week. Wednesday, the locals dropped a 6-1 decision to Dashwood and Sunday afternoon on the Exeter diamond they suffered a 6-4 loss at the hands of Belgrave. Exeter hurler Ken Pinder chalked up a total of 10 strikeouts against Belgrave but six walks, three in the first inning when Belgrave scored three times proved to be disastrous, With Belgrave out in front 3-0, Exeter scored their first run in the fourth inning. Greg Beattie and Bob Hoffman both reached base by way of successful bunts and raced home on a single from the bat of Ken Pinder. Fred Robinson scored the second Exeter marker in the fifth without the aid of a hit and Greg Beattie and Ken Pinder scored in the sixth, this time with the help of three bases on balls, Lots of fanning Dashwood pitcher Doug Melsaac was at his best Wed- nesday as he sent 17 Exeter batters down swinging in a seven inning game and only allowed three base hits. Paul Brooks singled and scored the only Exeter run in the top of the sixth. The other Exeter hits were a first inning triple by Fred Robinson and a single from the bat of Mike Dougherty in the third. Dashwood's first run came in the opening inning when Marty Becker singled and rode home on Mark Chandler's double. Singles by Paul Glaser, Fraser Boyle, Mike Masse and Pat Masse were responsible for four Dashwood scores in the fifth, Pat Masse scored the final run for the winners in the sixth. Rec ball - Continued from Page 6 Gerry Riehl scored in the second while McArthur, Rich] and Cooper completed the Dash- wood scoring in the third. John Payne's single sent two Grand Bend runners home in the first frame. Ron Crown tripled and Dan Dalton singled to produce the third Grand Bend marker in the fourth and Barry Clarke crossed the plate in the fifth with the help of hits from Dick Coulter and Stan Lovie. Dale Skinner was the winning pitcher with Kyle Harrison taking the loss for The Bend. Run in seventh wins Carl Butson's triple sent Brian Hosker home from second base in the seventh inning to give Dash- wood Industries a 5-4 win over the Dufferin Hotel, Wednesday night. . Dufferin took a two run lead in the first inning when Jim Glavin homered with Bill Boddycott on base with a single. Dashwood got one run back in the second on consecutive singles by Carl Butson, Grant Volland and Brian Hosker, Lloyd Math ers scored for the Dufferin in the second and Jim Glavin registered in the third to complete their scoring, Dave Elston came across the plate for DIL in the fourth on the strength of singles by Butson, Wein and Klumpp. In the sixth Bob Parsons tripled to send David tlston and Brad Klumpp home to tie the score at 4.4, Dave Elston was the winning pitcher for Dashwood with Don Appleby taking the loss.
