equalizer.
The potential tying run was

game.
Dave Ratz started on the

This coming weekend will be a busy one for folks
interested in horse shows and events of the outdoor
type.
Saturday at Exeter Community park, the sixth
annual Mid-Western quarter horse show will be held
with entries expected from many points in the United
States and Canada.
Performance classes get underway at 8:30 in the
morning with the more exciting events going in the
afternoon. Show secretary Noel Veri reports that several
new classes have been added for the younger members
competing.
The Exeter Saddle Club presents the second
annual Pinto and Appaloosa Horse Show at the Exeter
Community Park, Sunday commencing at 8:00 a.m.,
judge will be Floyd Cline, Ann Arbor, Michigan and
there will be 44 line and performance classes, plus a
stallion parade class including all breeds. These two
breeds of horses are shown in their own class.
The Appaloosa horse registry, located at Moscow,
Idaho was formed in 1938 and only about 50
Appaloosas were found that met registration
requirements.
In fact, the breed had just about disappeared
following the surrender of the Nez Perce Indians in the
war" of 1877 and the scattering of their fine band.
But today it is a different story. Perhaps even
while you read this, the number 100,000 may be affixed
to an application for registration after being processed
through a series of registration desks.
The weight ranges from 950 lbs. to 1175 lbs. and
from 14.2 to 15.3 hands. The minimum height of a
mature Appaloosa (five years or older) is 14 hands.
There is no maximum height. Appaloosas have solid
coloured or mottled roan foreparts being light with dark
round or egg shaped spots over the loin and hips, some
are white with spots over the entire body.
Mares are often less colourfully marked, being a
mottled roan over the entire body. Appalloosas often
carry a fine thin mane and tail. If the tail is heavy it
should be trimmed to fall near the hocks. All
Appalloosas must be registered to compete in Registered
Appaloosa Shows.
Pintos were included in the first boatload of
horses to come to the new world with the Cortez
expedition in 1519, and in the ensuing years, were used
as mounts by the Indians and early cowboys.
The Pinto Association registers horses of all
breeds and types, including ponies, saddlebreds, parade
and fine harness horses. All horses at two years of age
must measure at least 14 hands and all stallions must
pass a strict, conformation at two years of age before
they can receive a number in the regular registry.
Pinto horses have two main colour patterns —
Tobiano and Overo. Tobiano spots are usually regular
and distinct. The Overo, the white will not cross the
back between the withers and the tail. The body colour
is basically dark, with irregular splashy white markings.
The Pinto registry is still open, so if any horse
owners own a pinto that they would like to show, bring
it to the Exeter Pinto and Appaloosa Show. A pinto
inspector will be on the grounds to inspect your horse.
But all horses must either be registered or inspected at
or before the show to participate.
Donkey baseball
Monday night at the Dashwood ball park, we
could say the action is sort of similar, but it will actually
be horseplay.
The Dashwood men's club will be meeting
Members of the Dashwood volunteer fire brigade in a
donkey ball game.
Donkey baseball is actually not a test of one's
baseball playing ability but really a challenge in first
staying aboard one of the long-eared animals and then in
getting them to move in the right direction.
We have had a look at the lineups of both clubs
and know that the fans in attendance will be in for a lot
of action in one way or another.
The men's club will be headed by their president
Joe Dietrich who is also Reeve of Stephen township. Joe
will have assistance from former municipal politicians in
an attempt to talk the donkeys into the right attitude.
Former Huron warden Jack Morrissey is
Dietrich's second lieutenant and we have a suspicion
another former warden Glenn Webb was purposely left
off the line-up and will be coming in late in the game as
a pinch-hitter.
Fire chief Gerald Martene has a formidable roster
with a couple of grocers in Hugh Boyle and Bill
Chandler who may be able to entice the donkeys with
some of their goodies and Jim and Bob Hayter ready to
take care of any mechanical failures that may occur.
If any friends or relatives of the participants have
fears of their safety we can assure them they have
nothing to worry about. The last paragraph of publicity
on the game reveals that Hoffman's Ambulance and Dr.
Gulens will be not too far away.
Friedsburg Days
While speaking of Dashwood, the village's
Friedsburg days slated for the Dominion Day holiday
will have plenty of sports features.
Glenn Webb, manager of the Dashwood Tigers is
in charge oe arrangements and has come up with an
excellent program. Sports events have been slated for
Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 2, 3 and 4.
Friday night's doubleheader will have the
Crediton and Dashwood pee *Nees battle in a baseball
game in the first half with Brucefield and Motherwell
meeting in the second half.
Saturday afternoon the Dashwood juveniles will
be in action with a night twin bill featuring the
Dashwood bantams in one game with an exhibition
softball game between the Worth Middlesex all-stars and
an all-star club from Exeter.
The ball portion of the weekend will come to a
close Sunday afternoon with the Dashwood Tigers
swinging into action.
Also on the program at various times will be a
tug-of-war test and horse shoe pitching contests.
Anyone wishing to compete either in tug-of-war
or horse shoes is asked to get in touch with Glenn Webb
or George temhn.
Using the same come-from-
behind methods, the Dashwood.
Tigers scored a pair of wins in the
Huron-Perth baseball league
during the past week to up their
season record to three wins in
four starts.
After trailing the Arva juniors
by a 12-1 score at the end of three
innings on the Dashwood
diamond, Friday night, the
Tigers bounced back to eke out a
15-14 decision.
Sunday afternoon in St. Marys
it was the same story with the
Tigers coming out on top 7-6 after
trailing 6-2 at the end of seven
innings of play.
The Tigers were at home last
night, Wednesday to the Mitchell
BP's and are idle until Wed-
nesday, June 16 when they travel
to Arva,
Bedard gets win
Dick Bedard went the full nine
inning distance Sunday to post
the close win over St. Marys,
giving up nine hits while fanning
five.
With St. Marys out in front 3-0,
the Tigers started into the run
column in the top of the third with
two markers on the same number
of hits.
Walks to Dave Ratz and Bob
Webb along with Whitey
Denomme's single and Pete
Ravelle's two-bagger provided
the opening Dashwood scoring.
St. Marys moved ahead 6-2
before the Tigers found the range
again in their half of the seventh,
scoring twice without the aid of a
hit off St. Marys hurler Dave
Zvonkin.
A St. Marys error, walks to
Ravelle and Ratz and two hit
batsmen sent two Tiger runners
home.
The final three Dashwood runs
came in the top of the ninth again
with the help of two St. Marys
miscues. The only Tiger safety in
the inning came from the bat of
Bill Schade.
St. Marys threatened in the
bottom of the ninth. With one out
and two runners on, Pete Ravelle
snagged a hot liner at third and
fired to second sacker Bill
Schade for a double play to end
the game.
Free scoring
Friday' night's game against
Arva was a free-scoring affair
with first the visitors breaking
loose with a big rally and then the
Tigers coming back with a rush
as they scored at least one run in
each of the last five innings.
The first Dashwood run came
in the first frame when John
Hayter singled and came around
to count on a similar hit from the
bat of Pete Ravelle.
Behind 12-1, the Tigers started
to roll in the fourth as they dented
the plate on three occasions.
Pete Ravelle opened the inning
with a single and came home
ahead of Gord Vincent when the
Tiger catcher belted one over the
fence for a home run.
Dave Ratz kept things moving
with a single and eventually
scored on an error and sacrifice.
The fifth inning was productive
as the Tigers took advantage of
an error and five free tickets to
first base. Adding to the charity
were singles by Bill Schade and
gained two hits apiece.
Completing the 27-hit total with
one hit each were Steve Thomp-
son, Bill Baker, John Wuerth,
David Lovell, Jeff Lindenfield
and Danny McIver.
The pitching duties for the
winners were shared by John
Wuerth, Dan Crerar and Harry ,
McNeil.
Larry Seymour collected three
hits to lead Huron Park in a
losing cause.
