'Times.Advucate, May 27, 1971 FOR ALL GOOD SPORTS By Ross Haugh Locals drafted We have made the statement many times in recent weeks that the Exeter Hawks just completed the most successful season ever for a local junior hockey club. This will have to be repeated again after last week's midget priority draft by member clubs of the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "A" grouping, For the first time in the short history of selections of midget-aged players, members of an Exeter team were selected. The OHA clubs began choosing midget players about four years ago to balance the strength of all clubs and prevent any one club from becoming too powerful by picking up all the promising youngsters. Randy Preszcator, who was chosen rookie of the year on the 1970-71 Hawks team was the first draft choice of the Toronto Marlboros and will be called to their training camp, probably early in October. Randy was actually the 16th player chosen as the Toronto club lost their first selection to Peterborough Petes through a previous deal. The Peterborough club was also very interested in landing the Exeter centre but in their first two chances picked Paul McIntosh, of Guelph and Mike St. Cyr of Stratford, both clefencemen. They are apparently in need of defence players for the coming season. The other Exeter Hawk to get a call was Pete Glover who was the sixth choice of the London Knights and their second selection of a defenceman. To have two youngsters selected by Junior "A" clubs certainly augers well for the calibre of hockey being developed by the Exeter Minor Hockey Association. A third player from the district western junior "D" grouping was Bob Zehr of the Tavistock Braves who was selected by the Peterborough club as their first juvenile choice. The Ontario champion Haliburton Huskies also got into the act by providing a pair of players for the Junior "A" clubs. The Hamilton Red Wings picked up Cam Botting (No. 6) as their sixth choice and Peterborough took Derrell Stamp (No. 18) on their seventh turn at selecting. Getting the call from the Ottawa 67's was big defenceman Carl Ashford of the Caledonia Corvairs who met the Hawks in the semi-final round. The only other player selected in the draft with any interest locally was Barry Edgar, a centre with the Petrolia Midget "B" club. Barry is the son of Mait Edgar, a former teacher at South Huron District High School and now vice-principal at the Petrolia High School. A player selected does not have to join the club drafting him. If he objects, the drafting club must either arrange to transfer him to another club or let him return to his original club. None of the players can be claimed by professional clubs until after his 20th birthday and only then through the over-age draft. This eliminates professional clubs from controlling players in their teen-age hockey years. Most clubs from whom players were drafted will be compensated by the A teams although there is no established fee. Lots of action Recreation director Alvin Willert has organized a busy schedule for public school boys and girls in the local softball house league play. Two junior girls clubs, the Bob Kats and Tigers play each Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at four o'clock while the Expos and Mets play in the junior boys division at the same time. Intermediate boys teams, the Tigers and Giants play each Monday and Wednesday at four with the senior Tigers and Expos clashing Wednesdays and Fridays at the same hour. Willert is also planning on filling the swimming pool by June 12 and hopes to have it open for business by the 15th or 16th of June. Flowers to be planted in Riverview park and adjoining areas were expected to arrive Wednesday morning. The recreation director also said he is pleased with progress of the waterfowl program at Morrison Dam. A number of wild ducks were placed in the dam area more than a month ago and in recent days Willert has found six nests with as many as 12 eggs to a nest, A wild goose, going by the name of Pierre, donated by Jim Sangster of Hensall added to the population this week. Three more families of wild geese are expected along within the next week or so. Any persons walking in any of the Morrison dam area are asked to be careful not to molest the ducks that are nesting. Attention, Golfers Branch 468 of the Royal Canadian Legion in Hensall is sponsoring an open golf tournament on Saturday, June 5. . The tourney will be held at the Bayview golf club on the Bluewater highway at St. Joseph and tee-off time is ten o'clock in the morning. Legion past president Paul Neilands advises that everyone participating will be ensured of good golfing, good food and good prizes. A total of 14 prizes are being offered with seven going to the lowest scores of the day and seven more being handed out for, hidden hole scores. The entry fee is seven dollars which will also provide a full course T-bone steak dinner between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Entries may be sent to Stan Kochan at Huron Auto Body, Hensall or call 262-2818, • • AM t. ar4.4P,, •t? .. ........
