In the senior boys section, Ron Janke of the local school turned in an ,excellent performance ending in a tie for the individual championship with Tim Smith of Mitchell. Each youngster picked up 22 points during the afternoon. Janke won the120-yard hurdles in a time of 16.8 seconds. The other South Huron senior win came when Gary Hartman was first across the finish line in the mile run in a time of 4.53.6. T-A photo At the final get-together of the Exeter Hawks for the season, Friday night, coach Bob White reminded the boys he would be calling the first practice for the 1971-72 season in less than five months. White won't have to worry too much about most of the Hawks staying in condition during the summer months. We happened over to the roller rink in Grand Bend Saturday night and found no less than eight members of the Hawks out loosening up. In addition, most of the youngsters will be playing golf and softball during most of the summer. Friday night's Meet the Hawks parade and dance was a huge success. It culminated the most successful season an Exeter junior hockey club has ever experienced. When we say successful, we mean in every way. The team was a big success on the ice and came within one goal of winning the Ontario championship. Financially it was also good with the team grossing over $4,000, Probably most important factor to the team's success was the fan support, especially in the seventh and deciding game in Haliburton. We were very impressed with a statement made by Bob White at the team's banquet Wednesday and again at the dance Friday night. White said many people said it was the flip of the coin that lost the provincial championship and a seventh game in Exeter would have made a different story. The kindly coach said he couldn't ask his players to turn in any better performance on any ice than they did in the final game in Haliburton. In his own words he said, "I don't care where we would have played the game, my boys gave me all I asked for and then some more." It was just a couple of unlucky bounces that beat us." Ladies' help appreciated • While many fans were instrumental in supporting the Hawks and organizing various projects three ladies in particular put in a lot of time and hard work. These three, Marg Murley, Val Gould and Murdena Glover were honored by the players and each received a beautiful potted flower plant. The ladies were responsible for raising a large amount of monies for the expensive bus trips to Haliburton and also decorated the Legion hall and prepared lunch for Friday's "Meet the Hawks" night. The individual Hawk trophy winners were named at last Wednesday's banquet at Grand Bend and in most cases it was a most difficult choice. In fact one of the polls among the players ended in a tie and a second vote was necessary. The most valuable player award during the schedule went to Larry Haugh who led the Western Junior "D" grouping in scoring. John Hayter, who was the mainstay of the Hawks all season long with excellent goal tending was named the most valuable player during the playoffs and no one can argue with this choice. Coach Bob White was responsible for naming the most improved player during the year. The coach told the banquet this was a most difficult choice to make as everyone on the club played to the best of his ability. White chose a member of the 'kid line' Brian Bestard as the most improved saying "Brian gave me one hundred percent at all times and tried to put into practice everything I told him." Brian has not received his trophy as he is still a patient in St. Joseph's Hospital following surgery less than a week after the final game in Haliburton. The rookie of the year trophy went to Randy Preszcator, an unanimous choice. All the award winners are well deserving. As someone remarked at the banquet, "it's too bad we don't have an individual trophy for every member of the club as everybody deserved one." Getting back to Randy Preszcator, as winner of the rookie award, he turned in good performances all year long while still being eligible to play in midget ranks. As a matter of fact, Randy celebrated his 17th birthday Friday and was suitably honored at the Friday dance. An added birthday present came Saturday when Randy received a letter from the Peterborough Petes of the OHA Junior "A" asking for his scoring record for the year. This information was required by the Petes early this week as the midget preferred draft was held, Wednesday. During the entire season and playoffs, Randy scored 24 goals and recorded 35 assists. Seven of these assists came in the finals against Haliburton. Early golf tourney The first golf tournament of the season for all school teachers in the Counties of Huron and Perth has been scheduled according to John McCarroll of Seaforth. McCarron, who is physical education director for the Huron-Perth Separate school board advises that the first tourney will be held at the Oakwood Inn golf course at Grand Bend, Friday, June 18. The event is open to any teacher from kindergarten to grade 13 and tee-off time at Grand Bend will be three o'clock in the afternoon. Trophies are being presented by Labatt's and All-Pro Sports of Stratford. The day will conclude with a dinner sometime after eight o'clock in the evening. A good year With the hockey season being extended so late into the season we haven't had much chance to think about the current baseball season. On the national scene, Canada's contribution to the Chicago Cubs, Fergie Jenkins is off to a terrific start. The big right hander won his seventh game of the season late last week and his 98th career victory. Fergie should be well on the way to his fifth straight 20 game season and his next win will set a record for victories by a Canadian pitcher, in the big leagues. At the moment he is tied with Russ Ford at 98.
