ETHEL CUSHMAN PLACES AN ELECTRO-CARDIOGRAPH IN ITS CASE Where life begins Your hospital cares; do you? is the theme for Hospital Day held across Canada this week. The hospital, one of the com- munity's most important in- stallations, is where life usually begins and often ends. In the interim, it has always been the place to go when you're sick, a place where the staff is oriented toward getting you well as quickly as possible. However, the hospital is becoming much more than that. In an era when doctor's house calls are becoming increasingly less frequent, the doctor and patients alike, are looking to the hospital as a treatment centre. South Huron Hospital is no exception and it is the urgent need for expanded emergency facilities that has caused the hospital board to appeal to the Ontario Hospital Services Commission for a new building with enlarged areas for emergency and x-ray treatment. The laboratory, too, is busier than it has ever been. Mrs. Walter Bentley, R.N. is in charge of collecting specimens which are sent to Stratford daily for full range diognostic tests. This service which came into being about two years ago,is notonly for in-patients. About 50 percent of the persons using the lab facilities are out-patients sent by doctors. * The local hospital reached further into the community this year when it began preparing meals-on-wheels for Exeter United Church to deliver to senior citizens. In the past, career days have been held to allow young people to come to the hospital to discuss with competent advisors what careers they could find in the field of medicine. For the last two years tours of public school children have been conducted through the hospital to acquaint the youngsters with the function and the importance of this community institution. It is also a teaching institution, and a class of about twelve girls are capably guided through a course for registered nurses' assistants, each year by Mrs. Jack Delbridge, head of the school of nursing. • Many different skills are required in the efficient workings of a hospital: the doctors with many years of training, the registered nurses, the RNA's and technicians, the office personnel, and the maintainence people who keep the building shining and beautiful inside and out. Responsible for the smooth running of South Huron Hospital is Administrator Alice Claypole. She is backed by the hospital board of directors. These men and women are responsible to the community and to the governments for the total operation of the hospital. The Hospital Auxiliary, a group of dedicated women, support the hospital by raising thousands of dollars for equipment and needs. They also do volunteer work and play an important role in the upkeep of the hospital. All these persons, with their different training and skillS press on to do what they can to cure the sick, and to ensure the people the greatest possible degree of well being. They care; do you? Support the hospital. Different skills required EVERY CORNER OF THE HOSPITAL IS KEPT SHINING BY THE MAINTENANCE STAFF. BILL BERENDS AND ALEX MEIKLE HOSE DOWN THE BOILER ROOM. Many facets of hospital
