Meet the

most faithful. Grand Bend hockey
fan,
The guest speakers at the
banquet were Bill Inkol of CKCO,
TV, Kitchener and Dennis
Dupere of the Toronto Maple
Leafs.
Dupere answered numerous
questions fired at him by the
eager youngsters,
In answer to a query if Bobby
Orr was overrated, Dupere
replied, "No, certainly not, but he
can sure outskate you and out-
smart you."
The Leaf rookie who will be
working with Walter Tkachuit's
hockey school at St. Marys this
summer said his hockey hero has
always been Jean. Belliveau.
He said the minimum salary in
the NHL was $12,000 and in minor
pro it was $7,000 per year.

While the hockey playing season has been
concluded locally, the fans will have one last chance to
congratulate the Hawks on their fine showing in
extending the Ontario final to seven games.
A 'Meet the Hawks" night has been arranged for
the Exeter Legion Hail, Friday night with all fans of the
Hawks invited to participate.
This is a chance for the fans to meet the players
and management that brought us many hours of
exciting hockey for the past seven months.
Dancing will be to stereo music provided by Don
Taylor Motors Limited and will start at nine o'clock.
The evening will get underway an hour earlier
with a parade from the arena to the downtown area and
back to the Legion.
Players will be riding in convertibles. The Exeter
Legion band will be out in full strength and the South
Huron District High School cheer leaders are expected
to participate. Any other parade vehicles will be more
than welcome,
Let's make it one of the biggest nights in the
history of Exeter by getting out to meet the Hawks and
say thanks for a job well done.
One will be missing
One member of the Hawks playing roster will be
missing from Friday's activities.
Brian Bestard, the hustling youngster from the
Grand Bend area underwent surgery in London over the
weekend and is expected to be hospitalized for close to
two weeks.
We know that many of the local fans would like
to send wishes for a quick recovery and they may be
directed to Brian Bestard, Room 488, St. Joseph's
Hospital, London.
ders, he said Jacques Plante
has to be the best.
when he first came up to the
Leafs, Dupere said he was
amazed at the extra amount of
practice time put in by Plante
and Dave Keon.
After, the other players quit for
the day, Keon would stay out and
keep rushing and firing the puck
at Plante,
Also in attendance at the
banquet was Paul Roach who will
again be conducting his sports
training and hockey camp at
Huron Park from July18 to

scout for the Buffalo Sabres of the
NHL.

H -P meet in Wingham, Tuesday
Weather does help
For the first time in what seems longer than we
care to remember the weatherman is smiling and we can
think of other things but ice and hockey.
While the NHL finals are still grinding away, all
hockey in this area has been completed and the minds
of youngsters and some others not so young swing to
summery sports.
Baseball seems to be undergoing quite a revival in
this area with a lot of minor clubs being entered in
competition for the coming summer months.
Here in Exeter for the first time in several years
teams will be competing in the Western Ontario Athletic
Association.
Under the guidance of a newly formed baseball
association being guided by Doug Gould and Bud
Preszcator, pee wee, bantam and midget boys' baseball
teams will be representing Exeter in the WOAA.
Add to this, the same complement of pee wee,
bantam and midget teams from Crediton and pee wee,
bantam and juvenile from Dashwood, the area ball
diamonds should be humming in the next couple of
weeks.
At Huron Park, officials have started Little
League baseball on a very large scale.
All boys from 6 to 16 are being fitted into three
divisions under rules of Little Leaguers. The Huron Park
system is being patterned after programs in Stoney
Creek in Hamilton.
Stoney Creek has been the Canadian
representatives in the World Little League baseball
tournaments on several occasions in the last couple of
years.
Huron Park teams will be eligible to compete in
the Canadian playdowns with a chance to advance to
the finals against youngsters from all over the world.
While speaking of baseball, a very nice addition
has been made to the Dashwood athletic field.
Construction of a clubhouse with dressing and
washrooms is now underway and will be ready for use
by the three Dashwood minor ball clubs and the
intermediate Tigers who will again be competing in the
Huron-Perth baseball league in an attempt to win back
the Ontario Baseball Association "D" title they were
able to win in 1968 and 1969,
An organizational meeting of the Huron-Perth
league was held last week and it looks like the loop will
again consist of six clubs.
Teams from Thorndale, St, Marys, Mitchell,
Clinton and Dashwood are assured with an entry from
Stratford fairly close to being certain.
The Stratford team would replace last year's
Hensall club and keep the league at a half dozen teams.
Bob Frier of Mitchell is the president for the
coming year with Glenn Webb of Dashwood as
vice-president.
John Livermore will continue to handle the duties
of secretary-treasurer, a position he has held for quite a
few years.
At last week's meeting the league directors
decided to purchase a trophy that would go to the club
winning the league chaMpionship.
The new award will be named the John Livermore
trophy in honor of the many years of faithful service
put in by the secretary-treasurer,
