more and put a little more strut
into their step when they saw the
old campaigner on parade with
them. It was a proud moment for
me as I stood beside him when he
was requested to take the salute
on the march past.
Holidays are sure nice when
you are on them but it is sure H---
trying to get back to work
following them.
I haven't had too much time to
collect any Legion News for this
weeks column. However I did get
the result of the District A
elections held during the District
convention in London April 23 and
24.
The District A Commander
'Elect' is Comrade George Brown
of Chatham and the Deputy
District A Commander 'Elect' is
Comrade. Larry Ross of
Wheatley. Congratulations on
your election Comrades, we wish
you both a successful term in
office and as always, Branch 540
will do their best to fill their
obligations.
Many thanks to Comrade
Smilin Carl Stuckless for so aptly
filling in for me last week. You
did such a fine 'job Carl the
executive now know where to
look when I am relieved of the
Branch P.R.O. portfolio.
STOP
and
really listen
"Prejudiced? Who me? 'I'm
not prejudiced: after all,my kids
have a dark skinned teacher, I
like Chinese food, I have a
Korean foster child, stand up for
Indian and Eskimo rights and
believe in the United Nations!"
Yes most of us like to think of
ourselves as very broadminded
human beings, but we fear that
there is more than a little
prejudice in us all.
We are thinking in particular of
those long-haired, beard wearing
no-good unisex teenagers who
are supposed to delight in the
destruction of both themselves
and other people's property. But
that is truly an unjust miscon-
ception.
Oh, yes, there are rotten apples
in every barrel, and un-
fortunately the "media" plays
them up out of all proportion.
When fid YOU ever close your
eyes to look and listen to what
these young people have to say?
We mean really listen. You know,
most of them are good sound
young people, a little odd looking
to our standards perhaps, but for
all that, not too different than
ourselves at the same age - think
about it,
This summer, with the
unemployment being what it is,
we are likely to see more than the
usual number of young people,
and we, as Legionaires, should
AGAIN set the RIGHT example.
Next time you see a long-haired .
weirdo, don't just think "dirty
fuddle-duddle hippie," look with
your ears, not your eyes, you
might just find you like some of
them.
I don't know what kind of en-
tertainment Smilin Carl has lined
up for this Saturday but if I know
Newfie he will have something
that will be a joy to behold,
DATES TO -REMEMBER
May 12 - General meeting and
nomination and election of of-
ficers — Be sure to exercise your
vote Comrade - see you at the
meeting.
May 20 - June 3 — Provincial
Convention Royal Canadian
Legion - Waterloo.
And that's 30 for this week —
Remember — Old age is like
everything else. To make a
success of it, you HAVE to start
young.
By SID DALEY
Here we are back from the
North. Thank goodness the
hospitality and comradeship was
warm for the weather certainly
wasn't, On leaving Lucan I
removed my studded tires as I
knew I wouldn't be back in time
to meet the deadline and as dad
and I proceeded further north
the weather became colder and
colder.
As we passed Cochrane the
highways plow was out clearing
the highways for we ran into a
blizzard. However we arrived at
Kapuskasing safely. Believe me
it was sure wonderful to meet
with my old Comrades from
throughout District K and talk
over old times.
The Candian Forces band was
in attendance and played for the
convention dance, Saturday night
and for the parade to the
cenotaph on Sunday. This has
been the first opportunity I have
had to attend a district meeting
with my dad and to go on parade
with him, I think that everyone
squared their shoulders a little
