In these days of unisex, when
girls look like boys and visa
versa, there's still a pretty sure
way of sizing up the sexes of the
species. Lay down an owner's
manual and see who reads it.
It's almost assure bet it won't
be the gal.
Women are continually being
hauled over the coals for not
reading instructions, but there's
a perfectly logical reason for this.
Instruction books are always
written by men and therefore are
quite incomprehendible!
It's foolish to read all that print
when it doesn't make any sense in
the first place.
For instance.
Not long ago, the need arose for
me to have look under the hood of
the car. It was like trying to
break into a bank, and finally I
resorted to the manual in the
glove compartment.
This is what it said: "The
release lever is located under the
leading edge (what's a leading
edge?), on the crossbar (where's
the cross bar) to the left of the
centre. Slide release toward
centre of hood to release lock. (I
thought that was all, but no, there
was more,) Grasp release pad
(what's a release pad?), squeeze
release safety catch..." and so
forth and so forth and so forth.
I never did get into the hood,
and when I finally was shown the
proper procedure it was easy to
See why. The instructions, long
winded and complicated had
thrown me off completely,
Any sensible woman writing
similar directions, would have
simply said, "Yank the
thingamajig under the front edge
of the hood toward centre, then
pull the watchmacallit on the
other side and open the hood."
Nothing to it.
On another page I glimpsed
`How to Accelerate' which said,
"to obtain rapid acceleration,
press the accelerator to the ex-
tent of its travel."
For Gosh Sakes!
A woman would save time,
words and paper by saying, "To
go faster tramp on the gas."
When we bought the car my
husband was furious because I
wouldn't read the manual and I
was furious because he wanted
me to.
Where was the need?
With 25 years of accident-free
driving behind me it was an in-
sult.
There's a battle everytime a
new appliance arrives in our
household.
He was sure I was going to blow
us all to kingdom- come because
I steamed up the new pressure
cooker without reading the book
that came with it,
Always it's, "Why in heaven's
name don't you read the in-
structions?"
Recently we purchased the
components to a stereo radio. As
soon as it arrived I wanted to tear
into the cartons, get it unpacked
as fast as possible and set up so
we could hear its beautiful tones.
But alas, it couldn't be that
simple.
First, the Man had to read a
lengthy bookonjust on how to
unpack it!
Two hours later it was out of
the box but he was studying the
fine print and wiggly drawings in
the manual on how to set it up,
and turn it on for proper
operation.
Finally, the time came to flick
on the switch that would bring on
beautiful, flowing music of FM.
It was terrrible. It was all
foggy and scratchy.
Disappointed and frustrated
after the long wait, I told him
bitterly, "You've got a lemon.
It's no good. Pack it up and take it
back to the store."
Oblivious to my fuming he
calmly went back to reading the
manual.
Ten minutes later, with a smug
look on his face, he pulled the
electric clock that was plugged
into the same socket as the radio.
Presto. Clear, lilting music
filled the air,
Moral: I suppose it's alright
