Harness man sells shop
actively engaged in making and
repairing harnesses for more
than 65 years has sold his harness
shop and all equipment.
Edward Nadiger started as an
apprentice harness maker with
Mike Fenn, January 6, 1902 in
the building now occupied by Dr.
V. Gulens. He recently sold his
shop to. Dashwood area farmer
Garnet Willert, who will remodel
it into living quarters.
Mr. Nadiger went into business
for himself in 1904 and built his
own shop in 1913. Sets of harness
were made right from scratch
from rolls of hides,
The veteran harness maker
recalls he charged $28 for a
complete backbend team harness
in 1920, A set of collars were
thrown in with the harness.
One of the last sets he made
was a special double team har-
ness in the late 1950's that sold for
$250.
To stay in business in the early
days, a harness maker needed to
be a shrewd trader. He quite
often took wood and feed in trade
for harness.
The wood would be sold around
town while the feed was for a cow
or two and a few pigs that were
owned by the harness maker,
The Dashwood veteran also
doubled as an insurance agent
and was honored in 1963 for 50
years service with the
Economical and Waterloo in-
surance companies.
He also served as Dashwood
police village trustee for more
than 25 years.

equipment, tools and stock was
sold in 1969 with some of it going
to the Mennonite communities
near Elmira where horses are
still used extensively.
When asked what happened to
the harness making trade,
Nadiger replied, "The invention
of cars hurt us some, but it was
tractors that killed us, You know
I never owned a car. Had to set a
good example."
RETIRING HARNESS MAKER — After more than 65 years of
service in the trade of harness making Ed Nadiger of Dashwood has
disposed of his equipment and building. The veteran harness maker

Our Nitrogen Solution serves as the carrying agent for the
herbicides in suspension. You custom apply. You save the cost of
a spreader, the cost of side-dressing, one trip over the field. Figure
Out your own saving in dollars but don't forget the time you save
too. This practice was done with good success in many areas of the
U.S.A. Try it on some of your acreage this year.
