Contrast this with the activities of the Manitoba NDP govern- ment: they developed plans, they announced them last fall, and were able to open up 10,000 jobs, about 35 percent of the number of jobless in Manitoba. Home building was greatly stimulated — an object lesson that could be taken to heart in Ontario, where we have been falling 20,000 housing starts short each year for the last three years. We would provide employment, and at the seine time get more people into adequate housing, People do like our policies when they find out about them. They want to see the economy functioning so that jobs are created, and fewer people are on the costly and often humiliating welfare rolls. They like our plan for publicly operated, no fault car insurance. They want to see the disadvantaged section of the farm communities get a fair return for their labor and in- vestment. We are proud of our methods, and proud of the way we manage with what money we have. As the election approaches, you will no doubt be asked about our financial support from trade unions. We are happy to be associated with so many working people in Ontario in our political endeavors. But it should be better understood that the 5 cents per member per month is split bet- ween the provincial office and the federal office of the party, and that none of it comes to the local riding. So from this source the Ontario Party receives about $45,000 per year. Mrs. Chefurka, on the teaching staff at the University of Western Ontario was recently named to represent the riding in the next provincial election. The NDP candidate said in her report that planning is well un- derway for a provinicial election. "One thing that I can reveal from a secret strategy session that I attended this past weekend with 60 or more other candidates is that Middlesex North is one of the ridings that can be won by our party." Following is a part of the balance of her speech; Voters must be made aware of our policies, and that we and our policies are credible alter- natives to the present govern- ment. For example, in November 1969, Charles McNaughton, speaking for the government of this province, objected to federal policies on fighting inflation because of the unemployment it would create. However, our Ontario government did nothing.
