First Year
Report from Hundreds
of Farmers:
may now be insured under the
government plan.
Clarence Down, district
director of the Ontario Vegetable
Growers Marketing Board
outlines the new scheme.
Growers may participate in the
government plan as well as the
factory insurance which has been
used in the past.
The premiums will be $3 per
acre for corn and $4.50 for peas. If
using the government crop in-
surance plan all contracted
acreage must be insured.
Growers without claims will
receive a 5 percent discount, for
the following year. In
establishing the insurance, the
processor agrees to pay for the
seed if there is no crop at all.
Some changes are also being
made for 1971 in the insurance
coverage available through the
factory. On peas the coverage is
being extended to include hail,
wet, disease and insects.
Corn coverage now includes
hail and frost.
Down also said, the 1971 prices
had been set last week. Pea
prices would be exactly the same
as a year ago while corn was 50
cents higher at $30 per ton. He
added that spraying costs maybe
a little bit higher this year,
In regard to 1971 acreages,
fieldman Ted Wright said there
would probably be little change
from a year ago.
Wright outlined the
role of a fieldman and indicated
that any problems between the
fieldman and growers usually
come from misunderstanding or
lack of communication.
He added, "If you have any
problems, tell us instead of your
neighbour and we will likely be
able to straighten it out,"
Association president Harry
Dougall commented on the ex-
cellent relationship between the
processor and growers in this
area. This sentiment was echoed
by Canadian Canners manager
Jack Urquhart who said con-
tracting would begin very
shortly.
Other guests at the head table
that spoke briefly were Exeter
mayor Jack Delbridge, Huron's
assistant Ag Rep Mike Miller and
Newt Ashton, Ag Rep for Perth.
Ashton invited everyone to
attend the International Plowing
match to be held in 1972 in his
county near Sebringville.
More than $4,000 is being of-
fered in prizes for a paint-up
clean-up campaign and
homestead improvement
projects.
