Strong finish The Exeter youngsters scored the first two goals Saturday, Stoneybrook came on strong to win 6-3. Perry Pooley notched the first local counter at 4.28 with David Bogart assisting while Paul Pooley made the score 2-0 near the end of the period with brother Perry and Bogart assisting. Stoneybrook scored six times, in the middle part of the game as they carried the majority of the play. The final Exeter goal came from the stick of Brad Taylor with assists going to Murray Parsons and Darryl Preszcator. T-A photo The Exeter novice hockey club after suffering a loss in the first game of their third round Ontario Minor Hockey Association playoffs bounced back to win the second contest and force a third game, On, Exeter ice, Saturday af- ternoon Stoneybrook downed the Exeter boys 6-3, but back in London Tuesday night, the locals rallied and pulled out a 3-2 decision. While a definite date has not been set,, it is expected the third and final game will be played Sunday, somewhere in the London area. Stoneybrook won the flip for home ice in any deciding contest. The winner of this series will meet either Essex or-Blenheim in the next round. Brad Taylor's goal with about four minutes to go, Tuesday gave the Exeter club their win and kept -their playoff hopes alive. Paul Pooley picked up an assist on the winning goal. The Pooley twins collaborated on the first Exeter goal at 5.12 of the opening period with Paul scoring from Perry. Stoneybrook came back to tie the score before the first period ended. Murray Parsons put Exeter back in the lead late in the second period on an unassisted effort only to have Stoneybrook again Meet Caledonia next Disposed of Belmont in five While next week is designated as a mid-winter break for school children it will probably be a lot busier for many parents in the area. At least four Exeter teams will be competing in tournaments away from home, 17 novice clubs from Huron and Bruce counties will be participating in a tourney in Exeter and the annual Knights of Columbus minor hockey tournament is being held in Seaforth. The Exeter novice team starts things rolling by competing in the annual Brampton tourney Saturday at one o'clock with Uxbridge providing the opposition. The second game of a total goals series will be played the same night at eight o' clo ck The team will stay in Brampton overnight Saturday making the trip home in the morning in preparation for their third and deciding OMHA game with Stoneybrook. The local pee wee team travels to Goderich for the popular Young Canada tournament Tuesday morning to meet Grimsby at 11:40. An Exeter win would set up a game with either Hespeler or Aylmer at 6:40 the same night. In midget tournament play at Hespeler, Exeter meets Byron Tuesday night at 9:45. The last local club to see action will be the bantams as they take to the ice in Georgetown in a two game series with Levack. Game times are 1:45 and 9:15. Other district teams seeing action in the Goderich tourney are Grand Bend and Hensall. Grand Bend, WOAA "E" champs meet Atwood at 8:10 Saturday morning and if successful take on either Belmore or Plattsville at 5:30. The Hensall pee wees, who won the WOAA "D" title Saturday play their first game Wednesday morning at 9:20 when they take on Tiverton. Second round play would pit Hensall against Monkton or Belmont the same day at 3:10. Hawks reach provincial play Action locally While all-star teams from most centres are competing in the various tournaments next week, the house league boys get their opportunity to show their hockey talents. The Lake Huron zone of the recreation directors association are sponsoring a novice tournament at the Exeter arena, Wednesday and Thursday. Local rec director Alvin Willert reports that 17 teams from as far north as Owen Sound, Hanover, Walkerton and Kincardine will be competing. A total of 16 games will be necessary during the two days to declare an overall champion. K of C tourney The sixth annual Knights of Columbus hockey tournament is being held in Seaforth next Tuesday and Wednesday. Teams from Mount Carmel have dominated play the last couple of years bringing home both the junior and senior championships. In senior play, Mount Carmel meets Zurich in the first round, Tuesday at 10 a.m. Junior action has Mount Cannel taking on Dublin in the first game Wednesday at 9 a.m. A full schedule of opening round games can be seen elsewhere on these pages. With six weeks remaining in the regular schedule the Dark Angels lead the Exeter Legion mixed dart league by 15 points. The Angels are on top with 88 points while the B & J's and Dart Sharks are tied in the runner-up spot with 73 points. A three-way deadlock exists for third place between the Late Niters, Sharpshooters and Doublers. Each team has a total of 72 points. In Friday's play Anita Hunter won three games to lead the Shiphunters to a 4-1 win over the Sharpshooters. Bill Smith has 41 wins to his credit to lead the men in most games won with Duff Rothbauer and Keith Brintnell tied in second with 31 wins apiece. Barb Hearn's 28 wins is best for the ladies. Marg Wragg is second with 21 while Jean Estey and Annie Lawson have 20 wins each. Last week's scores were: Dart Sharks 5 — D & S's 0 Each team scored once in the first period with „,Larry Laye registering for the Hawks on an unassisted effort and Doug Hepburn scoring for Belmont. Laye, captain of the Hawks scored his second of the night and only one of the second period and Ron Janke tallied on a solo effort early in the third to give the Hawks a 3-1 margin. Dave Gauthier narrowed the gap at 13.18 and Landon found the mark with only one second to go to tie the score. Shiphunters 4—Sharp- shooters 1 BA's 4 — Canners 1 Swimmers 4 — Scotties 1 Dark Angels 4 — Winkers 1 Late Niters 3 — Doublers 2 Featherflights 3 — Itchy Four 2 BJ's 3. — Noisy Ones 2 After eliminating the Belmont Sunsets in five games to take the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" group championship, the Exeter Hawks are ready for the first round of provincial playoffs. The Hawks will meet the Caledonia Corvairs in a best-of- seven series to determine which club will advance to the Ontario final against a northern club, probably Haliburton. The first game of the semi-final set will go at the Exeter arena Friday night at 8.30 and the largest crowd of the season should be in attendance. A total of 925 spectators were at way mark of-the final-period. Other scorers in the first period were Ron Lindenfield and Brian Bestard to give the Hawks a three goal margin. Pete Glover and Bob Rowe scored early in the second period to put their club five up before the Sunsets hit the score sheet. Brian Abbey and Barry Stratton counted for Belmont in the second period and Dave Gauthier notched their final score late in the third period. The other Exeter goal came from the stick of midget Perry Stover at 4.43 of the closing session. Bears , Park near finals Minors in Shamrock In the first overtime session, Lindenfield counted at the 10 second mark with Steve Murley getting an assist. Only three minutes later, Brian Abbey again evened the count and that ended the scoring until Lindenfield wrapped it up on a three-way passing effort with Steve Murley and Larry Haugh. Randy Preszcator was the scoring star for the Hawks in the deciding win over Belmont, 7-3, Friday. Preszcator scored the first goal of the game with only two minutes elapsed on a play originated by Bob Rowe and Jim Guenther. He ended the scoring with his secOnd goal of the night and the seventh for his club on an unassisted sortie near the half- the final game with Belmont at the Exeter arena, Friday night when the Hawks won 7-3. The second game of the series will be back in Caledonia, Sunday afternoon at 2.15. Further games in the series will be arranged Sunday after a flip of the coin to decide the site of any deciding games. Manager Bob Baynham, coach Bob White and several Hawks were in Simcoe Sunday night as Caledonia edged Simcoe 6-5 to win the series in four straight games. All are optimistic of the Hawks chances against Caledonia. It took two periods of overtime in Belmont Wednesday night, for the Hawks to gain a 5-4 win and a 3-1 edge in games in the final series and set the stage for the clincher, Friday on home ice. Ron Lindenfield was thee scoring hero for the Hawks in the squeaker win in Belmont. He scored early in the first overtime period only to have Belmont tie it up again but scored the winner at 2.49 of sudden-death overtime. The Hawks built up a 3-1 lead in the late stages of the game but the Sunsets fought back to get on even terms. The equalizer to knot the regulation score at 3-3 was fired by Ed Landon with only one second left in the third period. ea Simmons 12 — MacDonald 5 Parsons 12 — Hackney 4 . The Exeter Legion mixed dart league is sponsoring their 8th annual mixed open dart tournament. League president Ed Hearn reports that entries are already in from Sarnia, Corunna, Preston, London and Walkerton. More than 50 teams are expected to participate in the popular sport. Cash prizes of $500 along with trophies from Carling's are being offered. Included in the entry list are some of the finest dart players in Ontario. Norm Ferguson is tourney chairman. Triebner's Gun Shop Hawks heading out The Exeter Hawks were successful in winning the district junior "D" championship in five games over Belmont and now meet the Caledonia Corvairs in the first provincial round. The first game will be played at the Exeter arena Friday night at 8:30 with the second game back in Caledonia, Sunday afternoon at 2:15. We would like to wish the Hawks the best of luck as they travel down the playoff trail. The same wishes are extended to the Exeter novice club currently engaged in a third round series with Stoneybrook, Exeter To err is human; to really foul things up requires a computer. Lieury, Shipka Ausable finalists The final round of playoffs in the Ausable Valley Rec hockey league gets underway Sunday night at eight o'clock at the Exeter arena. The Shipka Bulldogs and Lieury will be meeting in a best- of-seven series with games each Sunday and Wednesday nights until a winner is declared. Lieury edged the Brinsley Bombers 4-3 Sunday night to advance to the finals with a three- games-to-one edge in the series. Shipka ousted Ailsa Craig in 'three straight contests. Ernie Schlegel, Sonny Slater, George Fraser and Harry Martin were the goal getters for Lieury. Scoring in single fashion for Brinsley were Lloyd Mathers, George Tryon and Doug lee. Ontario The Exeter pee wees moved to the final round of Shamrock league play by defeating Ilderton two straight games while the bantams are all even with Ilderton in a best-of-three semi- final series. The pee wees downed Ilderton 4-1 in Exeter Wednesday and travelled to Lucan Tuesday night to gain. a 3-1 decision and the series in the minimum of games. In bantam play, Exeter downed Ilderton 7-2 on home ice in the first contest but were defeated 4-2 in Lucan, Tuesday. The deciding bantam game will go at the Exeter arena, Saturday night at seven o'clock. Robbie Heard scored twice to lead the Exeter attack in the first win over Ilderton. Singles were fired by Marty Becker and Brian Horrell. Murray Connolly was the Ilderton marksman. Exeter scoring in the second game went to Robbie Heard, Howard Schenk and Ken Pinder. Brian Taylor was the only double scorer for the opening Exeter bantam win over Ilderton. One goal apiece were notched by John Wuerth, Steven Pfaff, Randy Regier, Steve Schroeder and Wayne Regier. In the 4-2 loss, John Wuerth and Brian Taylor scored for the locals. The Dashwood Bears and Huron Park Plugs need only one game apiece to reach the finals of the Exeter and district Rec hockey league. The Dashwood club leads the Bank Boys two games to one in a best-of-five series while Huron Park holds a commanding 2-0 games lead over Newby Tire. Thursday night, the Bank Boys bounced Dashwood 6-1 to tie the series, but the Bears came back Monday night to gain a close 1-0 decision. In their only game of the week, Huron Park dumped Newby Tire 8-3 to go two games up in another best-of-five set. Bob Pinter, Ian McCallum and Frank Funston each scored twice for the Plugs in their latest win over the Tiremen. Notching single scores were Larry Brint- nell and Grant Turner. The only goal of the game Monday night was fired by Gary Grant as Dashwood blanked the Bank Boys. Thursday night, Earl Wagner and Fred Wells scored twice for the Bank Boys with singles being fired by Paul Mason and Ellison. Gerry Hartman counted the lone Dashwood marker.
