A good
day
Saturday's Minor Hockey Day celebration at the
Exeter arena was one of the most successful staged by
the Exeter Minor Hockey Association.
It may riot have been the best as far as finances
are concerned but the player and parent participation
was excellent.
Due to the postponement of the original day
about a month ago because of the storm, the schedule
was completely revised, allowing more of the youngsters
to participate.
It certainly was a well organized and well-run 13
hours of hockey with almost all of the 225 Exeter and
district boys registered with the EMHA taking part.
The morning was devoted to house league play
with novice and novice teams playing. The eleven
o'clock slot was taken by the youngest members of the
group showing off their wares to parents and friends.
Some of these boys are only five and six years of age.
We were pleased with the performances of the
four teams from Huron Park who won three of their
four games. While they were playing the Exeter No. 2
teams, the Huron Park boys showed plenty of hockey
ability and augers well for their minor hockey program
that gives boys not only from Huron Park, but from
Centralia, Crediton and Mount Cannel a chance to play.
Probably the most exciting game of the day was
the OMHA novice playoff between Exeter and Petrolia.
The Exeter boys scored twice in the third period to gain
a 4-2 decision.
The two teams were back at it in Petrolia, Sunday
afternoon and in a real thriller Exeter won 1-0 to
advance to the third round against either Stoneybrook
or Byron.
Three stars were selected in each of Saturday's
games excluding the house league action. While in
charge of the selections we would like to thank all the
fellows that helped pick the stars in the various games
throughout the day.
Congratulations to the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association executive and everyone that helped make
Saturday a real successful day. This includes, the arena
staff, rink rats, mothers that helped prepare lunches for
the boys and many other volunteer helpers.
Another top scorer
A former Exeter minor hockey star is currently
one of the top scorers in the British Columbia junior
hockey league.
As of February 8, Chris Riddell had collected a
total of 70 points, good for fifth place in the BC league
standing.
While his father Lyle Riddell was stationed with
the RCAF at Centralia and Clinton, Chris played squirt
and pee wee hockey in Exeter.
Five other players of the same pee wee team that
won the WOAA championship in 1962-63 are now
valuable members of this year's Exeter Hawk juniors.
They are Ron Janke, Joe O'Rourke, Larry Haugh,
Jim Guenther and Ron Lindenfield. The goalie on that
team was Mike McLaughlin, the same fellow that is in
the nets this year for Belmont and giving the Hawks
plenty of trouble.
A strong game
During our frequent visits to the Exeter curling
club we often hear comments on the strong points of
various curlers.
They are quite right when they use the term
strong. The curling rocks weigh about 42 pounds each.
In a three game bonspiel of eight ends, each curler
tosses 48 rocks. This means each competitor handles
slightly more than one ton of granite during each 'spiel.
It happened
Hockey experts have argued long and loud for
many years over the topic of when a goal was last scored
by a goal tender in professional hockey. According to a
recent story in the Hockey News it had never happened
until February 21 of this year.
In a central league game in Kansas City, goalie
Michael Plasse scored an unassisted goal by shooting the
puck the length of the ice into the unguarded Oklahoma
City net with the goalie out for an extra attacker.
The closest a goalie has come to scoring in
modern NHL times was two years ago when Ed
Giacomin of the Rangers hit the goal-post in a similar
situation with the opposing net empty.
We vaguely remember hearing a story of a goalie
skating the length of the ice in a professional game in
London back in the 1920's.
As we remember the goalie's name was Herbie
Stuart. If any of the old timers can recall this incident
we would be glad to hear from them.

Novice advance in OMHA
game late in the third period gave
the Sunsets their Sunday 4-3 win.
The same scoring pattern was
in effect, on Tuesday, only in
reverse. The Hawks took an early
lead with Belmont coming back
to tie things up and then score the
winner.
Brian Bestard shot the Hawks
into an early lead on a play
started by Pete Kleinstiver.

It was Larry Laye's goal with
only 36 seconds left in the first
overtime period that gave the
Hawks their opening 4-3 win on a
three-way effort with Bob Rowe
and Randy Preszcator.
The teams were even-stephen
through regulation time with two
goals each in the second period
and a single counter apiece in the
third frame.
Laye scored both Hawk goals in
the second period as he started on
the way to his hat trick. Ron
Janke and Bob Rowe assisted on
the first score with Mike Hoy and
Pete Glover helping on the
second.
Brian Abbey scored both

Belmont only replying once.
Pete Glover scored on an
unassisted effort and Randy
Preszcator registered from Mike

was the Belmont marksman in
the second and he came back to
score the winner in the third.
The Grand Bend pee wees won
the Western Ontario Athletic
Association pee wee "D"
championship in Belgrave,
Friday night with an exciting 7-6
win over the Belgrave pee wees.
The Grand Bend club now
moves on into Ontario Minor
Hockey Association playdowns.
Their next opponent was not
known at press time.
Cameron Haist's second goal of
the night with a minute and a half
to go in overtime gave the victory
to Grand Bend.
The score was tied 4-4 after
regulation time. Early in the
extra session Steve Jennison
scored two quick goals to give
himself a hat trick but Belgrave
fought back to tie the score again
and set the stage for the winner.
With time running out, Steve
Jennison hit Cameron Haist with
a perfect pass at the blue line and
the youngster made no mistake
as he fired a sharp shot into the
right hand corner of the Belgrave
net.
Jennison led the Grand Bend
scorers with his three goal
performance while Haist and

Exeter win was managed
Tuesday night on a shot by Steve
Murley, also in the last half of the
final period.
The fourth game was played
last night, Wednesday in Belmont
with the fifth slated for the
Exeter arena, Friday night at
8:30. If a sixth contest is
necessary it will go back in
Belmont, Sunday afternoon and if
a seventh and final game is
needed, it's back to the Exeter
arena, Tuesday night with the
usual 8:30 starting time.
Steve Murley's goal at 10:40 of
the third period and solid
Exeter defensive play to the
finish sent the crowd of 537 fans
home from the arena, Tuesday
night in a happy frame of mind.
The game was close all the way
with never more than one goal
separating the two clubs at
anytime.
Belmont opened the scoring in
the first period with a goal from
the stick, of Ed Landon. The
Hawks came back with two
unanswered goals in the middle
session.
Ron Janke tied the game at 1.48
of the second on three-way effort
with Mike Hoy and Bob Rowe.
Larry Laye put the Hawks
ahead for the first time with less
than five minutes to go in the
period when he converted passes
from Bob Rowe and Jim Guen-
ther.
Shortly after the halfway mark
of the closing frame, Doug
Hepburn tied the count at 2-2, but
the deadlock didn't last very long
as Steve Murley blasted the
winner home only 19 seconds
later with Pete Glover getting an
assist.

On ' a face-off in the Petrolia
end, Paul Pooley gained the draw
and flipped the puck behind the
net where Dave Bogart tipped the
puck back to the point to Fisher
and the game was over,
The Exeter win was gained on a
total team effort. Jim Veri in the
Exeter nets turned in an out-
standing performance as did
Timmy Gilmore at the other end
for petrolia.
Veri's best stop came in the
second period when a Petrolia •
player was left loose . n a rebound
and the local youngster stuck his
arm up to block the shot.
On two occasions Petrolia had
a man advantage and the Exeter
penalty killers of Paul and Perry
Pooley, Randy Fisher and David
Bogart did a good job of holding
the fort.
Quick start
In the first game in Exeter
Saturday afternoon, the locals
were quick to reach the
scoreboard with Perry Pooley
taking the opening face-off pass
from brother Paul and to fire the
puck into the Petrolia net at the
12 second mark.
Less than six minutes later
Petrolia was back on even terms
with Darren Syer scoring.
In the second period each team
again scored once. Syer was
again the Petrolia marksman.
Randy Fisher replied for Exeter
with a high, hard slap shot from
the left point with only 30 seconds
remaining.
At the 10 minute mark of the
third period, Paul Pooley fired
what proved to be the winning
goal on a pass from Derek
Regier. Only 50 seconds later,
Randy Fisher added the in-
surance with an identical drive
from the same spot as his first
successful shot.
The final series for the
championship of the western
grouping of the Ontario Hockey
Association Junior "D" series
will be close right to the wire if
the first three games are any
indication of what is to come.
While the Exeter Hawks lead
the best-of-seven final against
Belmont two games to one, each
victory has been by a single goal.
Home ice seems to be the
difference to date. The Hawks
opened the series with a 4-3 win
on home ice, Friday night.
Belmont came back to win by an
identical score Sunday afternoon
and the Exeter club moved ahead
with a 3-2 win at the Exeter
arena, Tuesday night.
Decisions in each game have
come late in each of the three
games. In the
first game, Exeter captain Larry
Laye scored the fourth and
winning goal with less than a
minute to go in overtime.
The Belmont win Sunday af-
ternoon came on a goal by Ed
Landon with less than 10 minutes
captain Kevin Datars each
scored twice.
Datars received the WOAA
trophy .from convenor Bert
Clifford following the game.
The Grand Bend club handled
by coach Bill Baird and his
assistants Bob Chapdelaine and
Griff Thomas went through the
regular season undefeated in
their first year in regular com-
petition,
In playoff action they suffered
their only defeat, a 1-0 loss to
Zurich before winning the next
two games.
