We do not have financial problems in the church; we have spiritual problems." United Church people gave $33,000 more to national church funds in 1970 than they did the previous year, but their givings fell more than half a million dollars short of meeting the budget. RECEPTION AND DANCE for BOB HENDRICK and LINDA WEBB (Bridal Couple) Sat., March 6 ZURICH ARENA Music by THE BLUEWATER PLAYBOYS LUNCH PROVIDED Everyone Welcome Campers A frank review of United Church finances, prepared by Dr. Harold Arnup, secretary of the Division of Finance, is contained in the current issue of The United Church Observer: Dr. Arnup says: total membership is down; average age of members is going up; use of weekly envelopes, the basis of support, has dropped by 121/2 percent; money raised in 1969 was almost half a million dollars less than the previous year, the first such drop in 30 years. Although congregational debt is down two and a half million dollars, higher interest rates mean that churches are paying more today than they did five years ago. For the last two years, the church has had to use both income and capital from the 10. million dollar stabilization fund to make ends meet. Church boards spent about one million dollars from reserves last year to keep going.
