HOCKEY
DAY
Lets bock
the kids
Despite a postponement of a couple of weeks due
to winter storms, the Exeter observance of annual Minor
Hockey Day should be bigger and better than ever.
Due to many changes since the original schedule,
a lot more action will be on tap. Most of the more than
200 boys registered will get a chance to show their
wares.
One of the features of the day will be an Ontario
Minor Hockey Association novice playoff game between
Exeter and Petrolia. This exciting playoff contest will
start at four o'clock in the afternoon.
. The big day including 13 hockey games will start
at nine in the morning.
At nine, Boston and the Canucks will meet in a
house league novice playoff game. The next game at ten
will be another novice contest between the Black Hawks
and Road Runners.
The eleven o'clock slot will be filled by regular
squirt house league action.
The twelve noon game will have the Exeter pee
wee all-stars taking on Goderich. The local pee wees
were eliminated last week by Caledonia in OMHA
playdowns.
The next three games starting at one o'clock will
have teams from Huron Park in to take on the No. 2
Exeter clubs in the novice, pee wee and bantam
divisions.
Following the novice OMHA game, the scene
switches to pee wee house league action. Boston takes
on the Blues at five o'clock while the Panthers and Seals
meet in the next game.
At seven o'clock, the Exeter mites do battle
against Hensall. The Exeter all-star bantams meet
London Southwest in the eight o'clock game with a
contest between the Exeter and Hensall midgets ending
the day at nine o'clock.
This program is available to all spectators for only
one dollar. The white "I'm an Exeter Minor Hockey
Booster" buttons that have been on sale for the last
couple of months will entitle the holders to come and go
as they please anytime during the day or evening.
The buttons are on sale at the arena or from any
hockey coach of the Exeter Minor Hockey Association.
All participants in the house league play will get
donuts and pop after each game while players in the
other games will get sandwiches and soft drinks after
their games.
Congratulations, Fellows
Congratulations are in order to three members of
the Exeter Hawks who won individual championships in
the regular schedule of the Ontario Hockey Association
Junior "D" western grouping.
John Hayter allowed only 82 goals in 27 games to
compile a 3.04 goals per game, the best average for any
goal tender in the junior league.
Larry Haugh won the scoring championship and
also picked up the most assists. He scored 30 goals and
gained '56 assists for his 86 point total.
While some people may think this next honour
could be a bit dubious that is far from the truth. Joe
O'Rourke gained the distinction of picking up the most
penalties, a total of 182.
As the captain of the Hawks and one of the club's
top defenceman O'Rourke was the strongman of the
defensive corps all season long.
While speaking of awards, we will mention
another of quite a different nature. Mike Hoy, another
valued member of the Hawks hockey club recently
received a bursary from the County of Huron. Mike is
now attending Waterloo University.
A good move
While most hockey players regardless of their
calibre of play wear helmets to protect themselves from
the numerous injuries that can be received, very few
officials wear any protection on their heads.
In the last couple of weeks we have noticed
several referees and linesmen in district Ontario Hockey
Association games wearing helmets.
This seems like a very good move, especially for
linesmen who are called on to break up fights and with
helmets on should be able to wade in and curtail a fight
a lot quicker and more efficiently.
At a recent Lucan Ilderton Jet intermediate game,
both linesmen wore head protection and in a game early
in the season a referee did the same.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets took
a big step towards reaching the
Ontario Hockey Association
Intermediate "B" group final by
trouncing the Elmira Polar
Kings 10-3 at the Huron Park
arena, Friday night.
The second game of the
best-of-seven semi-final set
scheduled for Elmira Sunday
afternoon was cancelled when
the Jets were snowbound on
their way to the Waterloo
County town.
While three players did reach
the boundaries of Elmira, most'
of the team were turned back by
provincial police because of
blowing snow making visibility
nil.
