Haugh Playoffs ahead While winter seems to be with us and spring still well away most amateur hockey teams have moved on to the playoff trail. While the Exeter junior Hawks, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets and two other local minor teams have started playoffs a lot of district teams are also heading for championships. Minor clubs from Grand Bend, Hensall, Huron Park and Zurich are participating in WOAA playoff action. The Exeter pee wees handled by Lloyd Moore and Bev Skinner got off to a flying start in their second round of provincial play by downing Caledonia by a score of 9-4 at the Exeter arena, Saturday afternoon. In recent years all visiting clubs have had trouble in playing a good brand of hockey in the very small Caledonia rink. The locals were forttuiate in winning the toss and if a third game is necessary it will be played Sunday afternoon here in Exeter. While the bantam and midget clubs were sidelined by St. Marys, the Exeter novice team is still waiting for word on their first round OMHA opposition. The Hawks gave their supporters a little bit of nervous frustration in their first round robin game Friday night but they came flying back with another come-from behind win to down Belmont 5-3. Hawk teams of recent years and this year's edition is no exception have been able to gain momentum in the late stages of their games. After ousting the Lambeth Flyers in the minimum three playoff games the Hawks are meeting Belmont and the Lucan Irish in home and home round robin contests. Friday night's game at the Exeter arena with the Lucan Irish supplying the opposition should bring out the best crowd of the season. In intermediate ranks, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets in an attempt to defend their Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate "B" championship compiled a very impressive record during the regular season. The Jets with playing coach Jack Nairn at the helm suffered only one loss and that was to the rough and tough Durham Huskies. The Jets meet the Elmira Polar Kings in a best-of-seven semi-final series starting at the Huron Park arena Friday night at 8:30. This year's edition of the Lucan-Ilderton club has an Exeter flavour with the presence of Larry Willert and Terry Bourne in the regular line-up. Willert, who is a graduate of the Exeter minor system right from pee wee ranks has been turning in a good job on the blue line. For the playoffs, Willert will be teamed with Larry Hossack who came out of sort of semi-retirement a couple of weeks ago. Terry Bourne brings lots of experience to the Jets. After performing with the Ingersoll Marlands in junior ranks, Terry played with the Jersey team in the. Eastern league for some time. Later he coached the Exeter junior Hawks for a couple of seasons and since that time played intermediate hockey with Crediton. We expect the Jets will again provide their fans with a real exciting brand of hockey down the playoff trail especially in the expected final with the Durham Huskies. Remember the carnival We would like to remind everyone in the area of the Exeter Figure Skating club carnival slated for the Exeter arena, Saturday night at eight o'clock. This year's presentation is entitled "Space and Spice, All on Ice". Under the direction of professional Brad Loosley, everyone of the more than 120 members of the local club will be participating in at least one number. A dress rehearsal was held Tuesday afternoon and it looked like it will be a colorful show. This is your opportunity not only to witness. a couple of hours of interesting and exciting entertainment but also show appreciation to the hard working executive for the many hours spent during the winter in organizing the figure skating club activities.
