Saturday , Feb. 13
— by SID DALEY
Things are sure humming
around good old 540. The
Saturday afternoon mixed darts
club is going great. In fact, Sports
Officer Gord Elson had to put up
an extra dart board to
accommodate the dart fans, and
is toying with the idea of getting
extra boards,. Sure wish we could
drum up as much for the General
Meetings!
Due to the adverse weather
and road conditions the public
speaking contest scheduled for
Feb. 5 had to be postponed. It
will now be held Friday,
February 12 at 8:00 p.m. in the
Memorial Hall, That's this Friday,
folks,
Come on over and hear what
the youth of today have to say. I
have followed this Legion
program for a number of years
and can honestly state that I have
always enjoyed myself and found
that it was an evening well spent.
Life's like that — some time
ago a friend was in trouble and I
helped him out. "I won't forget
you" he vowed. And he didn't.
He's in trouble again and he just
phoned me!
Tuesday night Mixed Sports is
another popular occasion around
Branch 540 and rolls around
every second week and Tuesday,
Feb. 16 is the date you have been
trying to remember. This is a real
fun night, Comrades, and if you
Sunshine club
honors birthdays
The Sunshine Club, with 21
members present, held a euchre
party, Thursday.
Winners of the prizes were as
follows: Ladies' high, Mrs. Ivy
Little; ladies' low, Mrs. H. S.
Prince; ladies' lone hands, Mrs.
Walter Martyn; men's high, Ben
Kelly; men's low, Mr. H. S.
Prince; men's lone hands, Alonza
Phillips.
Mrs. Cecil Neil was in charge of
the card party, and Mrs. Evan
Hodgins and Mrs. Gordon
Atkinson provided lunch.
This being a birthday party,
those who had had birthdays in
December or January were
honoured and a cake was donated
by Mrs. Frank Hardy Sr.
don't attend with your lady,
you're the loser!
While on mixed Sports, don't
forget Saturday Feb. 27 is award
night at Branch 540. Our pal,
Molson's Denny Riggin will be
with us. Be sure to keep this date
open, Comrades. Dinner at 7:00
p.m. Awards at 8:00 p.m.
Dancing to follow. Sounds like a
real fun night. How about it?
Shall we make it a date? I know it
will be an event to remember.
Whenever I get to feeling
indespensible, I take another look
at the old saddle hanging in the
garage.
Zone A 5 Sports sees Lucan at
Strathroy on Feb. 12. We are
always looking for good sports. If
you are interested in attending,
see Comrade Sports Officer, Gard
Elson.
A must date to remember is
Thursday, February 18 and
what's so special about this date?
Why it's the Zone A5 Dinner
Meeting at Ilderton. Remember,
Comrades, this is the election of
officers night. Have your say in
who you feel is best qualified to
head your Zone for the ensuing
. two years. The date, Thursday,
Feb. 18 at Ilderton — starting
time 7;00 p.m.
Zone A5 Bowling
competitions will be held at
Strathroy, Saturday, Feb. 13 and
the dart tournament will be held
at Roosevelt Branch 2, London at
11 a.m. on the same date.
Branch 540's second annual
children's snow vehicle party held
Saturday, Feb. 7 is now past
history. I am sure it will live long
in the minds of the many scores
of happy children who enjoyed
rides and the hot dogs, chili, pop
and hot chocolate that followed.
Our grateful thanks to the
many who worked so hard
preparing for the success of the
venture— to the kitchen staff, the
pearl divers (ahem) those who
looked after the safety of the
children and a very special thank
you to the many snow vehicle
operators without whose
participation there would not
have been so many happy
children. We tip our berets to you
fellows, namely: Wes Hickson,
Terry Hickson, Don Hirtzel, Bev
Hirtzel, Don Froats, Dan
Gwalchmai, Charlie Elson, Roy
Herbert, Roy Hodgins, Jim
Hickson, Bill Mathers, Hugh
Dietrich, Lorne Elliott, John
Callcott, Charlie Glean, Earl
Munroe and to any other
operator whose name may have
been inadvertently omini tted.
Another important date to
remember is April 14 and 25 —
for these are the dates of the
District A rally to be held this
year in London. Comrades, this is
also an election meeting and it is
here that you will select the
officers to look after the affairs of
your District for the next two
years. If you haven't had the
opportunity to attend a District
Rally, I assure you, Comrades, it
is an experience you will long
remember. Meeting old and
making new friends, to elevate
your thoughts to a higher level
than just your branch, to get new
ideas and above all to have an
opportunity to voice an opinion
and be heard. You will never get a
meeting of such magnitude any
closer to home than London. Try
to attend, Comrade, I'm sure you
will enjoy the meetings and the
comradeship.
Smilin' Carl advises that the
Country Airs will be in the Sea,
Land & Air Lounge, Sat. Feb.1.3
to entertain you.

A thought to leave with you
— Remember a snowmobile is
not a toy. Whenever you climb
aboard a snowmobile you should
be dressed like you are going to
operate a machine.
Long trailing scarves, Happy
or torn coats and gloves invite
being caught in moving parts.
Long dangling pierced earrings
are taboo. As with any machine,
if you remove protective parts,
like clutch guards, you are
flirting with painful experiences.
Remember safety first.
