Due to the blizzard that lasted most of last week nearly all sports ground to a halt. The district junior hockey schedule was completely wiped out and last week's games will go this week instead. The feature of the week has to be the outstanding performances turned in by the Exeter snowmobile club in helping in so many ways that we couldn't begin to mention them. With president Jim Newby in charge, enthusiastic members of the new club were all over the area helping in emergencies. Not only members of the club but anyone with a snow machine pitched in to take food to stranded school pupils, deliver drugs, pick up stranded motorists, etc. We were at the organizational meeting of the local snowmobile club and we're very impressed with their enthusiasm. Last Tuesday night, the first meeting of the executive was scheduled but the members didn't have a chance to meet but were busy cruising streets to look for any stray persons in addition to their mercy jaunts to the schools and other institutions. The next open meeting of the new club which is known for the moment as the Exeter and district snowmobile club will be held at South Huron District High School next Tuesday night, February 9 at eight o'clock. Everyone that owns a machine or is interested in club activities is urged to attend this important meeting. Officers from the local Ontario Provincial Police detachment will be in attendance to'show President Jim Newby told us about 30 members have already joined. This number is expected to grow greatly as most prospective members have been tied up with the storm during the past week. Anybody with a suggestion for another name for the club is asked to bring it to next week's meeting or get in touch with president Newby or any of the executive. The club will also be designing crests and decals for use by the members. Fees in the club for this year are quite nominal. The yearly membership fee is one dollar for one person or two dollars for an entire family. Everyone will be given a chance to join at the conclusion of Tuesday's meeting. We would urge everyone owning a snowmobile to join the new group. Clubs are springing up in many communities and are a real asset in maintaining communications with municipalities and police departments. In closing this part of our column we would like to pass on a sincere thank-you to all snowmobilers for their extreme co-operation and efforts in helping in the storm and we are sure preventing a lot of emergencies. Exeter Police Chief Ted Day echoed the sentiments of many area residents when he said "they saved the day." A tiger cat again District football fans received some good news this week. The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced that they have acquired the services of Dave Fahrner from the Edmonton Eskimos. Fahrner, a graduate of the University of Western Ontario was signed last spring by the Hamilton club but was cut at the start of the regular season. He was immediately picked up by the Eskimos and was with them for the rest of the year. Fahrner's father, Wally Fahrner, now a resident of London formerly lived in Crediton and attended High School here in Exeter and was a top athlete in many sports. A high scorer According to statistics released recently, Dave Webster is the leading scorer in the London East Manufacturing hockey, league. Webster, was a very valued member of last year's Ontario Hockey Association Intermediate "B" champion Lucan-Ilderton Jets. Postponed Saturday's annual Minor Hockey Day at the Exeter arena that was postponed because of the storm has been rescheduled for Saturday, March 6. Due to the fact some of the local clubs will likely be participating in provincial playdowns by that time, the entire day's schedule will be probably revamped considerably. Recreation director Alvin Willert told us this week he expected the morning of March 6 would be devoted to house league activities with all the youngsters having a chance to show their parents and friends their newly gained hockey talents. The afternoon and night will bring in outside competition to play the local all-star teams. The "I'm an Exeter Hockey Booster" buttons that have been on sale recently will allow the bearer to watch any or all of the fine hockey on tap on Saturday, March 6. Irish ready for action Eim.s-Advocate, February 4, 1971 They saved the day The first six teams end up in the playoffs with the first and fourth, second and fifth and third and sixth clubs playing a four out of seven series and the three winners playing a round robin p I a yo f fs for the league championship and the right to go on in the Ontario playdown. The Irish are counting on the veterans like Torn Hodgins, Jim Hearn and Dave Revington to carry the lion's share of the load in the next week's play. Add to this list the improved play of Dennis Carty on right wing who has started: to score with regularity and Kevin McCarnan who looks at home at center ice and Ken Needham who heads up play on defence makes the Irish look like real contenders for the league championship. If you are a Lucan fan be sure to pick up your Irish fan button at the arena and cheer our team down the home stretch, See you at the games.
