There will be no houseleague
hockey this Saturday. In order to
celebrate Minor Hockey Week in
Canada the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association is presenting the
above program.
It is hoped that parents and
friends will come to the arena and
see one or more of these games.
Proceeds for the entire day go to
help defray the expenses incurred
by the Minor Hockey Association
here in Exeter.
It is only through events such
as this that we are able to keep the
registration fee at its present
level. The goal set by one hockey
association is ohe thousand paid
admissions for the day. This
seems to be a realistic figure when
you consider that there are 250
boys playing hockey in Exeter.
See you at the arena.
Minors down
Dorchester
Saturday marks the official end of Minor Hockey
Week across this great dominion of ours and the
spotlight is on the younger hockeyists in two district
locations.
Minor Hockey Day is being observed. Saturday at
the Exeter arena while similar activities will be staged at
the Huron Park arena, Friday night and Saturday
morning.
Saturday's local observance of Minor Hockey
Week will be an important day for not only the close to
200 youngsters who take part in the Exeter Minor
Hockey Association but for the sponsoring group itself.
As far as the EMHA is concerned, it is one day in
the year when they can refurbish their treasury to
operate the hockey program that gives house league
time each Saturday throughout the winter to all
youngsters in Exeter and district from the six and seven
year old mites up to the midget boys of ages up to 16.
For the boys themselves it's an opportunity to
show their parents, relatives and friends what ice talents
they have developed by participating in the minor
hockey program.
Admission to the day's activities is by purchasing
an Prn an Exeter Minor Hockey Booster button for one
dollar. They are available for the sum of one dollar this
week from any member of EMHA or any player or can
be purchased Saturday at the arena box office.
This attractive button will allow the wearer to
come and go anytime during the afternoon and evening
and enjoy up to six exciting games of hockey.
The big day actually gets underway at eleven
o'clock with a house league mite exhibition game
between the Gold and Blues giving all of the boys up to
eight years of age a chance to do their stuff.
At twelve noon, the highly successful Exeter
novice team takes on a St. Marys all-star team in the
first of six games.
The Goderich pee wees will be in at 1:15 to take
on their Exeter counterparts. At 2:30, the hitherto
unbeaten Exeter bantams will play host to the Clinton
bantams and the afternoon session will be completed
with a 3:45 contest between the Exeter and London
Southwest midgets.
After a two hour break for supper, the Exeter and
Huron East mites swing back into action at seven
o'clock. The big day will be completed with a very
crucial Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" game at
8:30 between the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan Irish
Six.
While the local Hawks have first place sewed up in
the district junior grouping, the Lucan club is battling to
gain third place in the league standing and an easier foe
in the first round of the playoffs.
The ice surface will be the busiest spot at the
arena Saturday, but the auditorium will also see plenty
of action. After each game, mothers of the local all-star
players will be serving sandwiches and soft drinks to the
hungry athletes.
The Exeter and district minor hockey program
does not need to take a back seat to any in the country
but it does need our continued support. The best way to
back the program is to buy a button for Saturday's big
day.
This will be the start of events to really support
the local project. Firstly, the money helps finance the
minor hockey program. Buying the ticket induces us to
attend, and our presence encourages the youngsters and
those whose efforts are necessary to the success of the
local leagues.
Our support should not stop at encouragement.
We should pay public tribute to the men and women
who spend many hours and many of their own dollars in
organizing and operating the many teams, giving our
boys the opportunity to learn our national sport.
Out of this program comes better bodies,
healthier minds, better boys and better citizens. What
greater reward can we hope to attain?
The following motto of the Canadian Amateur
Hockey Association may be getting a little worn, but it
still applies: "Don't send your boy to the arena, take
him and stay to watch him play."
Huron Park observes
The Minor Hockey observance .at the Huron Park
arena begins Friday evening and concludes early
Saturday afternoon with most of the youngsters
enrolled having a chance to show their hockey wares to
their parents and friends.
At 7:45, Friday night, the Wings meet the Leafs
in house league action. This is a group of six to
ten-year-olds. At nine o'clock, the Huron Park novice
all-stars will meet Hensall in the first game of the
Western Ontario Athletic Association playoffs.
The third game of the night brings the Grand
Bend bantams in to play the Huron Park all-stars at ten
o'clock. Following the final game all youngsters
participating in the three games will be treated to hot
dogs and pop.
Saturday morning at 8:45, another house league
game will be played featuring the Flyers and Hawks.
The second game of the morning has the Grand Bend
and Huron Park midgets meeting in an exhibition game
at ten o'clock with the Huron Park pee wees taking on
the Kernohan Lumber pee wees of London. Frank
Funston heads a very enthusiastic hockey executive at
Huron Park and we would like to wish them lots of luck
in this week-end's promotion.
Should be a record
While statistics aren't available we are sure the
Boston Bruins set a record during their Saturday night
6-2 win over the Chicago Black Hawks.
In the third period, the Bruins outshot the Black
Hawks. 24-1 while sooting three goals. During the
Week-end Phil Esposito of the same Bruins scored his
44th goal in 46 games as he continues his torrid scoring
pace.
With only three games
remaining on the regular
schedule the Exeter
the
hold
a 20 point lead at the top of the

grouping.
The Hawks game in Lambeth

The two teams meet at the
Exeter arena, Saturday night at

of Minor Hockey Week and

Sunday afternoon contest at two

In last week's action, the
Hawks actually broke even as far
as points were concerned.
Thursday night in Tavistock
they lost 8-3 to the Braves, for
only their third loss of the
season.
Friday night back on Exeter
ice, the same two clubs played
to a 7-7 tie. Sunday afternoon,
again in Exeter, the Hawks
downed the Lambeth Flyers 8-5.
In Sunday's game, the score
was tied 2-2 at the end of the
first period before the Hawks
outscored Lambeth 3-1 in the
middle frame on the way to
their 8-5 victory.
The league's top scorer Larry
Haugh started the Hawks off
with the first goal on a
three-way effort with Ron
Lindenfield and Jim Guenther.
Larry Laye fired the next

and Randy Preszcator. Scoring

Ken Kightley.
Kighley scored again for
Lambeth early in the middle
session before the Hawks took
over. All three Exeter goals in
the second period came on
three-way passing combinations.
Preszcator was successful
with help from Guenther and
Pete Glover. Glover then
registered from Joe O'Rourke
and Larry Haugh and Steve
Murley hit the mark with assists
going to Mike Hoy and Haugh.
In the third period, Haugh,
'Laye and Preszcator each fired
their second goals of the
