The amount of students taking part in the more than 24-hour event was much greater than last year and teacher participation was also much better than last year. Several new events were added to the program to keep interest level throughout. The showing of horror movies right through the night captured a lot of interest and the pace of the marathon basketball never slackened. We were amazed by the final score of the basketball game. After 24 hours of continous play, the yellow team downed the green club by only 20 points 1,044 to 1,024. The outdoor activities again drew plenty of support with several teachers participating. Pete Connors was an easy winner of the snowshoe race with fellow teacher Bruce Perry placing second. Principal J. L. Wooden was on hand for the toboggan race and his team that was completed by five students placed third. Not a bad performance, until you find out, there were only three entries in the event. We would like to congratulate student council president Burton Moon and his aides for a well-organized and well run carnival. Teacher Bruce Shaw again was in charge of the very popular pancake eating contest. The pancake eaters drew the largest group of spectators of the weekend, with several hundred youngsters jammed into the cafeteria to cheer for their favorites. For the second consecutive year, Cathy Read outdistanced all girls in the eating department. She had little opposition in downing a total of 23 pancakes. The boys battle was a lot closer with Dave Rawlings edging Gary McLean by a couple of pancakes. The winner took care of 42 of the floury delicacies. Modesty, No Less We always knew there were some modest people in the world but heard about some over the weekend that really qualify. While at the Exeter curling club Saturday night waiting for a presentation of a curling trophy we heard about a rarity that happened, well we're not sure exactly when, but sometime during the current curling season. A rink skipped by Alvin Pym came up with a perfect eight-ender. This certainly rivals a hole-in-one in golf or a 450-game in five pin bowling. Other members of the Pym rink that was playing in the regular mixed league schedule were Art Cann, Helen Jermyn and Betty Coates. Top Scorer A recent issue of the Hockey News shows Len Fontaine of the Sarnia area and now a member of the Port Huron Flags is tied for sixth place in the scoring race of the International hockey league. Fontaine will be remembered as a top scorer with the Point Edward juniors when they were competing several years ago in the same league as the Exeter Hawks. While talking of former junior teams, this would be the time to mention that three former minor hockey stars of this area are performing well with the Petrolia Jets in intermediate ranks. Playing with Petrolia are Bill Fairbairn, Scott Burton and Craig Chapman. Support The Kids The annual local observance of Minor Hockey Week will be held at the Exeter arena, Saturday, January 30. The program will start at noon, a week from Saturday and run through until close to eleven o'clock and give local spectators a chance to see everyone of the Exeter all-star teams in action including the Junior Hawks. Admission to the arena for any or all of the games will be by wearing an I'm an Exeter Minor Hockey Booster button. The buttons are available from players of any of the minor clubs and their coaches or at the arena. The buttons will also be on sale at the arena on the big day. The price is one dollar. Carnival At Centralia The annual Winter Weekend at Centralia's College of Agricultural Technology will start tomorrow afternoon, Friday. Hockey will take the spotlight Friday night with school clubs from Centralia, Fanshawe, Ridgetown and Kemptville competing. Games will be at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Broomball and volleyball will fill the Saturday morning schedule with teams from Guelph and New Liskeard competing in addition to the four schools represented in hockey. Curling is on the schedule Friday afternoon at four o'clock and again Saturday morning at eight. Saturday afternoon from four to five will be devoted to judging of sculpturing, tug-of-war, three legged races and fun games. To-night, Thursday, the Exeter club travels to Tavistock to take on the Braves and the same two clubs meet on Exeter ice Friday night. Near the halfway mark, Ron Corriveau squared the score at 5.5 and from here on in neither club was able to score again. McKinley and Campbell assisted on the final Co-Op score. The Hawks drew 12 of the 15 penalties called by referees Gus Boussey and Bruce Collins with six of them coming in the last ten minutes of the game. Top goaling The Friday game Won by the Exeter Hawks over their namesakes from Mitchell by a 3-1 count was featured by an outstanding performance in the Mitchell nets by Don Camp belton. The Mitchell youngster turned away a barrage of Exeter shots and kept the outcome of the game in doubt until the final two minutes of play. Mike Hoy scored the only goal of the first period on a play started by Steve Murley and Pete Kleinstiver. Don Nicholson evened the score with a goal midway through the second period. The winning goal came at 17:51 of the last frame on a blistering slap shot from the stick of Steve Murley from the left side just inside the Mitchell blue line. Ron Janke and Larry Haugh helped set up the winner. Only nine seconds later, Peter Glover unleashed a similar shot from about the same location that caught the Mitchell net. Randy Preszcator and Bob Rowe assisted. Murley scores twice Steve Murley scored twice to lead the Hawks to their 5-3 win over the Irish in Lucan, Wednesday.
