District women's groups
elect slate, study history
This meeting is open to all ladies
of the church.
Study and devotional was
given by .Mrs. Harvey Hyde and
those assisting were Mrs. Harold
Bell and Mrs. Harry Snell. The
1971 study is on "Get the
Word around."
A letter from a missionary of
India, Miss Margaret Kennedy
was read by Mrs. Gordon
Schwalm.
All members contributed to
the "LeaseColn" box.
Next meeting will be held
Thursday,February 11 at 2 p.m.
with Mrs. Gordon Troyer and
Mrs. Clarence Volland giving the
study and devotion.
TELLS OF TRIP
UCW Unit 1 met Thursday
afternoon January 14. Mrs.
Robert Cook, the new unit leader
presided. The devotional was
entitled "Stewardship of Time,"
followed by two poems suitable
for the New Year.
Mrs. Walter Spencer
introduced the new study book
for this year on The Americas.
Mrs. Jack Drysdale gave the
highlights of their trip to Norway,
Denmark, Germany and other
countries last fall.
HISTORY WAS THEME
Tweedsmuir History evening
was observed by Hensall WI at the
January meeting last Wednesday
with president Mrs. James
McAllister presiding. Roll call was
answered with a contribution to
the Tweedsmuir History Book.
Mrs. Carl Payne and Mrs. Sim
Roobol were appointed a
committee to visit the sick and
shutins for the coming month. A
motion was passed to continue
sponsoring the 4-H club; A
donation was made to the local
association of Guides and
Brownies for the Camp Building
Fund at Goderich. A euchre is
planned for February 10.
Mrs. McAllister chaired the
program which opened with a
sing-song followed by a reading
by Mrs. Wilbert Dilljng. Miss

first meeting of the New Year
Thursday, January 14 with Mrs.
Clarence Volland presiding.
Annual reports were given by the
treasurer and the conveners of
the other committees.

KINETTE CLUB
The Kinette Club of Hensall
met at the home of Mrs. Gary
Maxwell, Zurich, for the first
meeting of the New Year. Guest
'for the evening was Mrs. Murray
Bell.
Plans were discussed regarding
the club's assistance with We
Kinsmen National Convention to
be held in London in August also
for the annual March of Dimes to
be held Monday February 1 at
7:00. A donation was made to the
local association of Guiding for
their new camp.
Mrs. Leonard Hoffman was
presented with her Kinette Pin
and by-laws and welcomed to the
club as their newest member.
BEGIN NEW STUDY
First meeting of the new year
of Carmel WMS was held last
Thursday afternoon with thirteen
members joining and answering
the roll call with a New Year's
resolution.
President Mrs. R. A. Orr
mentioned the Huron
Presbyterial annual meeting to be
held in this church with WMS and
Arnold circle as hostesses on
Wednesday January 27 at 2 p.m.
Report winners
in euchre play
The CPT committee of the
IOOF and Amber Rebekah Lodge
• held a successful Progressive
Euchre Thursday evening, with
thirteen tables playing.
The ladies' high prize was won
by Mrs. Al. Hoggarth;
consolation, Mrs. John Skea;
gent's high prize, Mr. John Skea;
consolation, Mr. Jim McEwen; • lone hands, Howard Lemmon.
A draw was held on two
baskets of apples which were won
by Mrs. Glenn Bell and Mr.
Charles Hay.
Greta Lammie on her tape
recorder played memories of
early days in Hensall by Mrs.
Harris, the former Irma Rannie.
Mrs, T. J. Sherritt read a poem
"The Parlour Organ" with soft
music accompaniment by Miss
Lammie.
The history of Rogerville was
presented by Mrs. Robert
Simpson. Mrs. T. Brintnell read
newspaper clippings of the past
provided by Miss M. Ellis. Mrs. J.
Corbett gave courtesy remarks.
Program conveners were Mrs.
Grace Peck, Miss M. Ellis and Mrs.
Simpson; hostesses, Mrs. Clarence
Reid and Mrs. Fred Beer.

UCW QUILT
Chiselhurst United Church
Women had a pot luck dinner and
quilting in connection with the
January meeting. Mrs. Russell
Brock, president, opened the
meeting and Mrs. Jack Brintnell
gave the worship "Hasty
Judgment."
Mrs. Clarence Coleman, Mrs. J.
Brintnell and Mrs. Alvin Cole gave
a short skit. It was decided to
send money to Miss Nicol in
memory of Lucille Sperling.
Mrs. Thos Brintnell
introduced the new study book
on "The Americas." . '
Mrs. George Boa convened the
program.
Fair society

George Frayne was elected
president of the Hensall South
Huron Agricultural Society
during an annual meeting held in
Hensall Saturday afternoon.
Other officers are vice presidents,
Larry Merner, Grant McGregor;
secretary-treasurer, P. L.
McNaughton. The society also
announced the Hensall South
Huron Agricultural Twilight Fair
will be held June 22 this year.
MISS MARGARET A. SMILLIE
Miss Margaret A. Smillie of
Toronto passed away Friday
January 15 at the Trafford House
nursing home at the age of 95
years.
She was the daughter of the
late Mr. & Mrs. Ben Smillie, and
born and raised on the Smillie
homestead one and a quarter
Miles north of Hensall. She
taught school for many years in
Hay Township and Haileybury
and Toronto.
She leaves one sister, Dr.
Jennie Robertson, Toronto; one
brother, Dr. A. B. Smillie, Niagara
Falls, several nieces and
nephews : She was predecessed
by two sisters and two brothers,
(Mary) Mrs. John Elder, Hensall,
Miss (Emmaline) Smillie
Toronto, a former missionary in
India, Mr. James Smillie, Hensall
and Rev. Ben Smillie a missionary
in India.
Funeral service andcommittal
was held Monday January 18 in
the Miles Funeral Home, St. Clair
Avenue, Toronto. Interment in
the mausoleum at Hensall
Cemetery.
MRS. MILTON RUSSELL
Mrs. Milton Russell of Hensall
passed away in St. Joseph's
Hospital, London, Friday,
January 15 where she had been
admitted as a patient that week.
The former Mary Clara Dunsford
she was in her 88th year.
Surviving are her husband, one
son Homer, RR 1 Exeter; four
daughters, (Isabel) Mrs. Don
Wilson, Tucson, Arizona;
(Margaret) Mrs, Leroy Coleman,
Blenheim; Mrs. Irene
Bossen berry, Grand Bend;
(Audrey) Mrs. Don Joynt,
Hensall; one sister, Mrs. Florence
Gould, Exeter, also 15
grandchildren and 15 great
grandchildren.
Public funeral services
conducted by Rev. G. Anderson
were held from the Bonthron
Funeral Home, Monday, January
17 at 2 p.m. Interment was in
Exeter cemetery.
Pall bearers were Keith
Buchanan, Ed Little, R. H.
Middleton, Percy Campbell, Earl
Campbell and Bev. Gould.
'McALLISTER B, GREER
Funeral services for the late
McAllister B. (Mac) Greer who
died suddenly at Westminster
Hospital, London, Thursday,
January 14 was held from ,the
Logan and Sons Funeral Home,
London, Monday, January 18
with Canon Derwyn Jones
officiating. Interment was in
Woodland cemetery.
Surviving are his wife the
former Jean Bonthron, formerly
of Hensall and one sister, Edith
(Mrs. H. W. Plaggemeyer), Grosse
Point Michigan.
Mrs, James Sangster who has
been a patient in St. Joseph's
Hospital, London for the past
two weeks returned to her home
Saturday.
Capt. John R. Beer, Winnipeg,
spent the weekend with Mr. &
Mrs. Fred Beer, and Mr. & Mrs.
George Beer and family.
