In this the first column for the year 1971 we
would like to congratulate the Exeter Minor Hockey
Association and the coaches of the Saturday morning
mite house league in particular.
Mainly because of the enthusiasm of the six men
the first Exeter mite hockey tournament held on the
second last day of 1970 was a smashing success.
Fellows like Ron Horn, Tony Mattucci, Gerry
Parsons, Wilf Beattie, Jack Fuller and Willi-tar Wein who
spend a lot of time every Saturday morning to help the
youngsters were the main cogs behind the tournament,
Other members of the local hockey organization
pitched in with various chores. They were president
Harvey Pfaff, Gord Kirk, Fred Wells, Alvin Willert and
Gary Middleton to name a few.
The tournament was well run from start to finish
with the championship in the final game being decided
exactly three minutes before the specified time.
Running a ten-game all-day tourney right on time
is a sure sign of good planning. Another important part
of any hockey set-up is efficient refereeing and this was
well handled by a group of local volunteers. Early in the
day, Paul Robinson, Randy Tiernan, Randy Gilfillan,
Pete Glover and Steve Murley handled the whistle
tooting duties.
Murley who officiated in six of the ten games of
the day teamed up with ex-EMHA president Derry
Boyle to work the last two games.
In addition thanks should .go to the many other
persons involved ranging from goal judges, time keepers,
scorers, rink rats to some mothers of the youngsters that
helped in the booth to feed the hungry hockeyists after
each game.
Out on the ice in tournament play, the brand of
hockey dished up by the eight-year-old and younger
boys was exceptional. Competition was surprisingly
close with none of the clubs able to score more than six
goals in any one game.
The Exeter Lions club donated trophies to the
two championship clubs and individual awards went to
the most valuable player of the day and the best goalie.
In addition Gord Kirk of the local hockey organization
donated a trophy for the most sportsmanlike team of
the day. This award went to the Goderich club. The
young players were judged for their conduct on and off
the ice.
Choosing the most valuable player of the day was
an easy chore with eight-year-old Glenn George of the
Forest club getting the unanimous nod. He scored nine
goals and led his Forest club to the grand championship.
Young George came up with the winning goal in his
team's 2-1 win over Goderich in the semi-final round
with only two seconds left in the game.
The best goalie of the tourney was Doug Hoffman
of the host Exeter team. While Doug didn't have too
much to handle in his team's opening 6-0 win over
Hanover he was a standout in the second round and
only his steady play held St. Marys to three goals in the
second game.
