The kids were excited and
happy,
They sang their zippy action
songs, recited their little poems or
acted out their parts. They
feasted on a special lunch of
Christmas goodies, and squealed
with delight when a lively Santa
burst through the door with All
his merry bells jingling,
It was a typical .Christmas
party except that the gl) kids
attending this one were better
behaved than most. They were
the classmates of Huron. Hope
Day School and Huron Hope
Nursery School for retarded
children,
If they were handicapped in
some way, their joy and
exuberance made up for it, One
bouncy little fellow practically
danced through the whole thing.
He was so full of rhythm that it
was impossible for him to stop
jiggling in time whenever anyone
sang.
A blond, gentle girl discovered
with delight that her red velvet
dress was made of the same
material as Santa's suit.
When the jolly old chap struck
up Jingle Bells all the children
joined in, and they came to his
rescue when he got stuck on. the
words of Rudolph, the Red
Nosed Reindeer.
There was little spilling and no
grabbing for food that is often
seen at children's parties when
they sat down to a yummy lunch
prepared by the Orpha Club of
Grand Bend. And when Santa
Claus gave out the gifts and treats
they remembered to thank him
politely and happily.
It was a good time.
Huron Hope Day School has
14 pupils and is under the careful
and loving guidance of Principal
Mrs. Eleanor Scott, assisted by
Mrs. Mildred McGregor, This class
has been conducted for three
ears in rooms at the J. D.
cCurdy School at Huron Park.
It is unique in the province in that
It is the only school for the
retarded that is held in an
ordinary public school with no
segregation from other students,
The nursery class is held in the
Alhambra hall south of Grand
Bend. •Five children attend and
volunteer teachers, Mrs. K.
Koricini, Mrs. Elva Wheeler and
Mrs. J. Blewitt are in charge of the
children there.
The days of keeping a retarded
child hidden away at home is
happily long gone. These
children, with proper guidance
and love, can be taught many
things to equip themselves to live
in the world with the rest of
mankind.
Huron Hope Schools are well
named. For, indeed, they do give
hope to parents and most of all,
offer hope to children who for
unknown reasons just happened
to be born a little bit different
from the rest,

Santa Claus continues to live

Hope you and your family share
an old-fashioned Christma'S decked

By CYNTHIA GUNN
Grade 8 —Exeter PS
Recently, while looking after
my seven-year old charge I was
confronted with the
highly-sensitive question, "Is
there really a Santa Claus?"
Though rather staggered at
this inquiry, I hastily regained my
sang-froid and proceeded to
answer haltingly and aimlessly.
My answer did not satisfy either
By MARY ELLEN SCHLENKER

A lonely figure trudged down
the deserted road looking for
shelter from the cold, snowy
night. It was Christmas Eve, but
Karen wasn't happy. If only she
could find shelter somewhere.
Her coat was torn and snow had
filled her boots.
She felt like giving up hope,
but she kept on. Oh if only she
hadn't run away from . the
orphanage. Here she was. She
couldn't go back now and besides
she didn't like it there. Miss Baker
was nice, but the other kidt just
made fun of her.
Karen was coming to a town.
Oh, if only someone there would
let her stay overnight. Half tired
and half exhausted she dragged
herself to the first house she saw.
Up the steps she crawled and
banged against the door.
When she finally came to again
she was lying in a lovely bed just
like her bed at the orphanage. A
pretty, young lady was sitting on
the edge of her bed.
A man came into the room
who, she found out later, was the
lady's husband. They asked
Karen were she lived and the told
them the whole sad story.
The, next day, Christmas bay,
the JOIlhS011s phoned the
orpharige to tell Miss Baker where
one of us, so later I began to
wonder to myself, "Is there really
a Santa Claus?"
Granted not in
flesh-and-blood form, but to
convince millions of children
each Yuletide season of the jolly
old man clad in red coat with
white beard, somehow St.
Nicholas must be a truly powerful
spirit.
If he were just the figment of
Karen was. Karen and the
Johnsons had a wonderful
Christmas together.
At. dinner time they told
Karen that they wanted to adopt
her. Karen was so happy that she
gave them both a kiss.. She
thought she was the happiest girl
ever.born.
friends
someone's vivid imagination,
Santa wouldn't have grown and
spread through all the world as
Father Christmas, St. Nicholas,
Kris Mingle, Pelz Nichol, Sinter
Klass and of course our
ever-popular idol Santa Claus.
I can remember clearly the
Christmas mornings when
ecstatic feelings of expectation
temporarily changed to anxious
doubts concerning the late night
Christmas Eve visitor. "Suppose
he was sick at the last minute?
What if a blizzard came up out
of nowhere and he didn't dare
attempt to make the journey all
over the world?" Later
investigation always proved my
fears to be groundless; Santa
Claus wouldn't and didn't fail me.
Even this year's Christmas
morning, I will wake to the calm
assurance that tempting parcels
of every shape and colour will be
awaiting me. Santa Claus is very
real to me personally in the form
of the most precious gift of all —
love, from family and friends.
After all, that's what Christmas is
all about, isn't it?
