Gwyn to &tide, Christmas, for all its popularity, never sits as easily with us as we expect, says Rev. Robert Farrar Capon in a recent published article. We are caught between the cross fire of the icon' job of the commercial establishments to sell us everything up to the kitchen sink, and the ecclesiastical bogeyman, who with elegant righteousness tries to give us all a bad conscience about spending too much money or having too much fun on Christ's birthday. .0;84181111084taititZ8,a1Platefit04.,81148310,41.1tItt GREETINGS etc Joy unconfined, hope unrestrained ... our Christmas wish for you. Marjorie Dilkes Your Hairdresser 235-1744 EXETER ritsicsvevitaztroiktcovalftart Over spending and over indulgence is a bad thing, but superfluous righteousness is dangerous too. Ifyou examine therecords you'll find many of the world's ills have been caused in the name of righteousness, while the number of massacres caused by eating big dinners and spending money on toys and Christmas goodies is rather small. The world is a sad, beaten, scarred old place, yet, God looking at it 2000 years ago chose to enter into it with love, and the ecclesiastics who preach snooty spiritualities about a Christ who lives in some remote province of God with realms of angels and stars of wonder are not talking about the Christ who was born in a barn, grew up in a family, worked hard at a trade, and experienced frustration, despair, discouragement and sorrow. In his lifetime, Jesus recognized the value and the need of getting away from the woes of the world and relaxing in the happy comradeship of his friends. He took time out to refresh Himself (often with his Bethany friends) before going back to minister to the needs of the sick, the poor and distressed. How wonderful it is for us to have Christmas as a time of relaxing and giving our poor old flesh and bones a holiday from too much righteousness and too Christmas eve midnight service Christmas Eve, the bells of Trivitt Memorial Church will call the people of Exeter to the traditional midnight service of Holy Communion which commences at 11:30 p.m. All communicants of other churches are invited to join in this service as guests of the Anglican congregation. The choir, augmented by singers from other churches will lead in the singing of the service, of the hymns and carols. The rector of Trivitt Memorial is the Rev. George Anderson, the organist is David Elston, and the leader of the choiristers, Mrs. Maud Connon. much responsibility for an anguished world. Wouldn't it be soul-soothing if for one or two days we could turn off all the bad news on the TV and rest our brains and emotions so that when we turned back to the world we would be refreshed and optimistic enough to dare to hope that maybe the good news that Jesus brought just might start to get around? So, let's relax and enjoy ourselves by splurging a little on our loved ones, by polishing up the furniture and lighting the candles, and inviting family and friends in for happy times. To be sure, there are agonies in the world we can not fully imagine, and we know that Christmas is not all lights and music and eating and celebrating, even in our own land. But, Christmas is based not only on the Christ who came to wipe away human tears, but also on the Man who sat and ate and laughed with his friends and enjoyed all the delectable things that God offers to His world. For example ... - is the bird too large for an even flow of hot air around it in the oven? - is it completely thawed, very cold, or almost at room temperature? - is the stuffing cold or at room temperature or is the bird unstuffed? Since any roasting chart can only be approximate because of these and other reasons which lengthen or shorten cooking times, it is wise to allow a little more time than in the roasting chart. It does the turkey no harm to rest in a warm oven (with heat off and door ajar if necessary) for 15 to 30 minutes. It actually makes it easier to carve. However, it can be awkward to have to delay dinner when everything is ready but the bird. Remember if turkey is placed in a closed roaster it will steam and so cook in a shorter time than a chart will indicate, similarly, if wrapped in foil or roasting film. Most modern timetables, are based on roasting on a rack in a shallow pan with turkey covered with a loose tent of foil or roasting film or draped with a fat-moistened double thickness of cheese cloth. Foil is removed for the last hour of roasting to allow browning. Film or cheese cloth do not impede browning so may be left on the full time. Baste only if the bird looks like it is drying out.
