FOR A.L GOOD SPORTS
By Ross Haupt'
.L.et's look
ahead
This column brings to a close our sports coverage
for the year 1970, It sure doesn't seem like a year ago that
we did a summary of the sporting events covering the
entire 60's,
in this last issue of 1970 we would like to take only
a brief look at what happened in the past twelve months
but look at what could lay ahead in the coming year.
Some may judge the success of a team or individual
by the championships they win, but it may be more
correct to credit a sport that gives a lot of people the
opportunity to participate especially in this day and age
when more leisure time is becoming available.
More people than ever seem to be participating in
golf, bowling, curling and lawn bowling. One of the most
popular sports in the winter months seems to be
sn o wrno
In recognizing championship wins during 1970, the
main ones were accomplished by the Lucan-Ilderton Jets
in winning the OHA Intermediate "B" title, the Crediton
bantams in taking the WOAA "D" crown and the South
Huron triumphs in junior football and wrestling.
Looking ahead to the new year we would hope for a
repeat for the Jets and there is a very distinct possibility of
three Exeter hockey clubs winning provincial
championships.
The junior Hawks seem to be the best in the
western OHA "D" grouping while the Exeter bantams and
novice hockeyists look as if they could go all the way.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the
many people in Exeter and district that help us
throughout the year by providing scores and information,
As one can readily realize it's physically impossible
to attend all the sports events personally so we depend on
help from a lot of friends.
While we will name_ a few of the folks involved we
would apologize for any that we miss and that will
probably happen.
At the Exeter arena it's wonderful co-operation
from Alvin Willert, Gary Middleton and John Roelofs. In
conjunction with the recreation activities, swimming
instructor Joan Warren and her staff were also very
helpful along with the summer playground supervisors.
While speaking of the arena, all minor hockey
coaches do their share in sending along scores. For the
junior Hawks manager Bob Baynham always brings us the
reports of the away games.
Another very active group at the arena is the Exeter
figure skating club with president Barb Dougherty in
charge of 135 youngsters.
At the high school it's a thank you to Ron Bogart,
Doug Ellison, Glenn Mickle, Jack Riddell, Lauretta
Seigner, Mrs. Lee and Trudy Stover, etc.
We shouldn't forget principal Joe Wooden and two
of the school secretaries, Doris Swartz and Valerie
Callingham, who we seem to bother so often to get
messages to and from the various coaches. •
,In district hockey ranks we think of Don Urbshott,
Steve. .Storey, Barry Beech and all of the wonderful
fellows connected with the Lucan-Ilderton Jets,
Add to this list Clare Stanley, the voice of the
Lucan Irish, pardon me, the 'Fighting Irish' as Clare calls
them, Bob Galloway who has taken over the reins of the
Zurich Combines and Joe Regier of the Crediton Tigers.
Thinking of summer sports, the names of Glenn
Webb and Bill Vandeworp of the Dashwood Tiger baseball
club pop into mind and Bob Sadler of the Huron-Perth
baseball league along with Johntivermore.
In minor ball this year we received great help from
Lorne Preszcator and his wife Joyce in getting reports on
the two Crediton teams.
In other seasonal sports, we have had fine
co-operation from the Exeter bowling lanes and the
Exeter curling club. In connection with bowling it's Grace
and Aub Farquhar and their many fine league secretaries
especially Jack Fuller who has handled the men's statistics
for many years.
On the curling scene, last year especially Lois Learn
was really helpful in providing-the men's scores. She was
actually doing the job for husband Lee.
The activities of the Exeter Legion mixed dart
league were well reported by secretaries Edna Dietz and
Annie Lawson.
We can't forget the executive members of the
Exeter Saddle club, the rodeo committee and the local
pony racing club.
Another busy group in the summer time can be
found at the Exeter lawn bowling club. There help comes
from fellows like Howard Ince, Len McKnight and Alvin
Pym.
To all of these people and others that we probably
missed we would like to say a very sincere, "Thanks,". To
all we would ask your continued co-operation in
providing us with infoimation. In some cases we don't
find out about events because we were not told about
them. So give us a call, no matter how small the
information may be,
In closing, remember, if you can't Play a Sport, at
least, BE ONE.
A very Merry and Blessed Christmas and a Happy
and Prosperous New Year to everyone.
