By PAT CONDON There is an old English ballad called down by the Greenwood Side and it is about a young girl who had illegitimate twins born to her. In her frustration and helplessness she took her penknife and killed the two babes. But one day, seven years later, as she was walking in the wood, she saw two beautiful little boys playing. In her loneliness and suffering she called to them, wishing they belonged to her. She heard voices answer, "Ah mother, we were once yours," and they disappeared into the wood. This is a tragic story, and could have happened in those days where you were stained for life if such an incident befell you. Now, the experiences of the unwed mother may not be as given, 'as two authorities from the Children's Aid Society informed the students of grades 12 and 13 at South Huron last week. Society has become more accepting to such a plight, which, incidentally, has been increasing steadily since 1961, but, the lowest rates are in Ontario, I am relieved to say. It is sugrested that: mothers of illegitimate children 'tend to be some four or five years younger By MISS JEAN COPELAND Mr. & Mrs. Oliver Stacey, David, Kim and Darryl of Avonton and Mr. & Mrs. Don Nairn, Wayne, Paul and Jane of St. Marys were Sunday supper guests with Mr. & Mrs. Gerald Brintnell, Terri and Scott. Darwin Lannin of Dublin and Bill Spence of Mitchell visited Sunday with Mr. & Mrs. David Wheeler. The Woodham-Kirkton Young Peoples Union went around the village carol singing Sunday evening. than mothers of legitimate children; girls from disrupted families or communities may be more vulnerable; and the mother plays a large part in dealing with the problem or any social agencies involved. This seminar was addressed to a mixed group of boys and girls, health and family perspective classes. After a very interesting film including information on many other interesting branches and facets of the CAS we were given a lecture on the topic by Mr. Heath and Miss Wilkes, social workers from the CAS. In the question and answer period following I was surprised to observe that no questions were rendered by the males and only a few segregated snickers came from their side of the gym when a female raised a controversial question. But it is very hard to get a gym of boys and girls to forget their self-consciousness and inhibitions and ask the questions they have always wanted to ask. I also became aware of the fact that the fathq of an illegitimate child can be taken to court to provide funds for support of the child and also to assume the name of the child. Adoption was discussed as a common solution to the problem of an unmarried mother but our speakers very strictly avoided any suggestions as to preventive measures such ' as contraceptives or abortions which was commented on by many of those who attended the seminar. But when thhiking of this, situation, I try to imagine the emotional strain of the young girl in this situation, torn by fears and prejudices with her bulging tummy and a bare finger where a wedding ring should be, unhappy about the little life growing within her. Once I lived in a land With three suns One above me, One behind me, One before me, So my body Never cast a shadow Wherever I walked So I wasn't afraid Any more. There were no shadows No fears And in this land I never cried tears For always there was Love and joy.
