SUGGESTIONS SNOWMOBILE OWNERS
The Exeter Council and Police Department seeks the cooperation of all
owners of snowmobiles so that they may continue to enjoy to the full the
sport and at the same time protect the interests of other citizens.
Please cooperate by:
1. Operating machines as quietly as possible and at such times as not to
inconvenience citizens. This 'means the curtailment of late night operation,
particularly the practice of travelling in groups.
2. Avoiding areas where sickness exists such as the hospital grounds and
streets adjacent to nursing homes.
3. Following all highway traffic regulations and regulations contained in
the Motorized Snow Vehicle Act. '
4. Respecting the rights of property owners and avoiding taking short
cuts over private property,
5, Giving precedence to pedestrian traffic remembering that
snowmobiles, being so low, sometimes can be difficult to see.
The cooperation of ail operators is urged, It would be unfortunate if the
actions of a few operators made necessary restrictive Controls that would
curtail the pleasure of other owners.

Minor clubs
fare well

Minor hockey tournaments are getting to be a dime
a dozen during the Christmas and Easter holidays but the
one slated for the Exeter arena this holiday season is a bit
of a unique one.
Coaches of some of the smaller boys in the Exeter
Minor Hockey Association are planning a Mite
tournament to be held, Wednesday, December 30.
Sanctioned by the EMHA, coaches. Ron Horn,
Tony Mattucci, Will Beattie, Gerry Parsons, Jack Fuller
and 'Wilmar Wein are giving young hockeyists that have
not reached their ninth birthday by the end of 1970 a
chance to compete against youngsters their own age.
Teams will be in from Hanover, Goderich, Zurich,
St. Marys, Forest, Strathroy, and Lambeth in addition to
the Exeter mite all-stars.
The tourney will get underway at 8.45 in the
morning with a ten game schedule slated to end
somewhere in the neighbourhood of nine o'clock in the
4 evening.
Each team will be assured of at least two games.
Teams losing in first-round games will go into a
consolation round with a second chance to win a trophy.
The championship trophy for the "A" title is being
presented by the Exeter Lions club.
Admission for the day is quite nominal with adults
paying fifty cents and children being charged only a
quarter for the complete day of hockey action,
In preliminary games periods will be of 15 minute
a duration with the last five minutes of the third period
being stop time. The championship contests will be of
regulation 20 minute session with the first two going
straight time and the last ten minutes of the final period
being stop time.

A popular sport
During the last couple of weeks we have attended
several meetings where the subject of snowmobiling has
taken up a lot of time.
Most of the complaints have been of excess noise
especially during the late hours and also riding on
sidewalks.
Exeter Police Chief Ted Day told us early this
week that any snowmobile operator with his machine
on a sidewalk in the town would be charged.
The same goes for making unnecessary noise. This
charge can be laid under the Highway Traffic Act. We
know that only a very small percentage of the operators
are causing these concerns and would hope that they
heed the warnings and don't spoil the sport for the rest
of the snowmobile enthusiasts.
Chief Day said operators are privileged to drive
their snow vehicles within the town limits, so,
"Therefore, keep them on the roadways and off the
sidewalks."
Day cited an' instance in St. Marys last week
where an elderly lady was standing on the sidewalk and
was seriously injured when struck by a snow vehicle.
The number of snow vehicles in the area is
increasing by leaps and bounds.
The council in Grand Bend is concerned with
snow vehicles running on their green areas and
sidewalks. They hope that operators will use common
sense so stringent rules need not be put into effect.
Chief Day and his Exeter police department are
this week holding clinics at the Exeter public school on
the proper use of snow vehicles and have composed a
traffic knowledge test.
Another questionnaire has also been drafted that
will be available to adults through dealers along with a
request for assistance from all snow vehicle operators
for care and courtesy towards pedestrians and the public
in general.
We recently ran across some do's and don'ts for
snow vehicle operators. They may seem rather simple:
but this type of rules are the ones that can cause a lot of
trouble if broken and certainly can stand constant
repeating.

goal at 13.55 and exactly one
minute later started the play that

The London team came back

completed a play with Brian
Mercer and Perry Pooley.

Do's
Register your snowmobile at your nearest
Licensing Bureau, where laws require it and affix
registration plate to rear of back-rest.
Always use your lights when riding at dusk or at
night. The reduced visibility makes it a must to protect
yourself and alert oncoming drivers.
Insure your Ski-Doo snowmobile against Public
Liability.
Until you become truly expert, do follow
established trails. They will keep you away from barbed
wire fences and guy wires.
Mark all new trails that you and your group may
use frequently. Trail marker signs are available from
your dealer.
Check weather forecasts before long drives and be
sure to either carry enough fuel or map out fuel stops
along the route,
Always carry emergency materials and supplies,
(spark plug, drive belt, tools, bulbs, flashlight, rope,
matches, etc.).
Be careful when giving children a ride. Go more
slowly and check frequently.
Use a rigid hitch or two-bar when pulling a
caboose or other trailer behind your snowmobile. Rigid
hitches prevent tailgate collision on sudden stops and
provide better control.
When trailering your snowmobile, tie it solidly,
protect it with a bright cover, check trailer hitch and tail
lights before leaving.
