vicious." He then proceeded to
do a peaceful war dance in the
middle of the highway to the
delight of the children and the
motorists who were lined up.
While he may have been spoofing
about his Indian blood his
devotion to children is real. "I
always miss them when they're
absent because of sickness, and I
always spot a new face of a
youngster who may have just
moved to town and is using the
crossing for the first time."
His wallet bulges with school
photos pressed upon him by his
small charges.
Hank is being retired at the
end of the year because he is past
retirement age. He's not looking
forward to it.
For one thing his income will
be lowered drastically and will be
made up mainly by his old age
pension. His wife does not yet
receive the pension, "I don't
know how we'll manage . . . it's
going to be tough," he says.
But most of all he's sorry
about the children.
"I don't think I'll have a very
happy Christmas," he predicts
sadly. "After all, I'm losing all my
children."

Dear I-lank, I love you!
Father and mother to a ll kids
Hank Green has had so- many
proposals of marriage he's lost
count.
Dozens of small girls, who
cross Main Street on their way to
Exeter Public School under
Hank's guidance, have pledged
their love and their desire to
marry him when they grow up.
One winsome little miss even
went so far as to set the date,
Four times a day, for eight
years, Hank has been at the Main
and. Victoria Streets intersection
to faithfully guide the children
across the busy highway, In those
eight years, through every kind of
weather, he's only missed being
there when he had to attend a
funeral.
"Sometimes I was almost sick
enough to die but I knew the kids
were counting on me,"
They've counted on him in
more ways than one. "Will you do
up my buttons, Hank'?" "Please
tie my shoes, Hank." "Have you
got a kleenex, Hank?" and "I
need a bandaid, Hank," are just a
few of the requests he's fulfilled
as his duty of school crossing
guard.
The tykes tell him their secrets
(which he will divulge to no one),
and they share childish sorrows
and joys with him, too.
To some he's a real pal and
playmate, His wife remembers
two little boys arriving at the
Green door one evening and
asking, "Can Hank please come
out and play?"
He's been the first real crush of
some of the little girls. Mrs. Green
answered the phone one day and
heard a small voice of an English
girl just recently moved to town
ask, "Can Hank take me to the
moving pictures, tonight?"
That he has won the love of
the hundreds of children in his
keeping is evident by the scrap
book he's has of the many cards
and notes he's received over the
years.
One tiny girl carefully de-
signed a colorful card of flowers,
hearts and crosses. The words on
it say, "Thank you for taking
good care of me. You have my
.love until death." She ended it
with, "The Lord bless you and
keep you. Amen."
He has cards from every
occasion, including Father's Day,
but a most prized item, and which
speaks of devotion not usually
shown to a patrol guard, is a frilly
paper apron made at school by a
small boy who wrote in
painstaking, crooked print, 'I o
Hank on Mother's Day. I love
you, Hank."
The scrap book also holds
notes and letters from
appreciative parents who knew
their children were safe as long as
Hank was on the job.
Hank doesn't stand for bad
manners or sauciness and has even
given a lesson on racial
discrimination. "Are Indians
vicious, Hank?" asked a little
fellow one day. "No," scoffed
Hank. "I'm an Indian and I'm not
HANK GIVES A HAND — The chores of Hank Green over the years as school crossing guard have been
varied and on many occasions he took over the role of a mother. Above, Hank is helping Elaine Cross with
the zipper on her coat while Susan Hewitt, Colleen Whiteford and Blanche Cross gather around.
