Appearing to be the class in their respective leagues are the Exeter Hawks and the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. The Hawks with a real hustling club this year have only lost once and tied two games in fifteen league starts and in pre-season play they downed last year's Junior "D" champs from Norwich, once in very decisive fashion. Coach Bob White has the boys playing completely as a unit and depends on good solid co-operation instead of a super star or two, While the Hawks are playing to good crowds, the Lucan-llderton Jets are performing before only a handful of fans at the Huron Park arena, This has to be the best brand of hockey in this part of the country and fans are missing a lot when they fail to take a look at this club. Playing coach Jack Nairn has put together what we think is a better team than he had last year when they went all the way to take the OHA Intermediate "B" championship. The Jets are solid in goal with Wayne Parkinson and Don Stewart sharing the net minding duties and veteran Keith Scarborough still around behind the scenes if an emergency should arise. The defensive brigade has only two holdovers from last year, manager Don Urbshott and Ron Cauduro. Added on defence are Bill Dunnell, Bob Lashbrook and Larry Willett. Willert, a graduate of the complete Exeter minor hockey program has been doing a fine job on defence and has helped to give the Jets strength at the blue-line. Only one forward line is completely intact from last year. It has Nairn at centre with Doug Galloway and Steve Storey on the wings. While the veteran Storey has failed to score a goal this year he has been a constant thorn in the side of the opposition with his persistent checking. The hero of last year's final game against Napanee is among the missing this year. Jim Bender and his new bride of a few months ago are now in Winnipeg operating a Young People's Home. Speedy Steve Proctor has taken over on the line with ,Jacques Cousineau and Jamie Robb making it probably the fast threesome in the league. The only other holdover from last year is Ken Loft, a teacher at Medway Collegiate at Arva. Among the newcomers on the front lines are Barry Irwin, Bill White, Dick Doughty and Walt Parkinson. This year's edition of the Hawks is proving an old adage to be quite true. A good offence is your best defence is certainly a good description of our young Exeter club. In 15 games of the regular schedule to date the Hawks have scored a total of 115 goals while the opposition has been only able to put the puck into the Exeter net on 35 occasions. Individual statistics also have a very strong Exeter flavour. Larry Haugh leads the league in scoring with 44 points while team-mates Pete Glover, Ron Lindenfield and Steve Murley are close behind in the first ten top scorers. Slow trading Word out of the major league baseball winter meetings that were held in Los Angeles last week has very little doing on the trading scene. Officials of the Detroit Tigers were apparently talking to most of the clubs in the league with an eye toward obtaining another catcher and a utility infielder. A number of names, like Duke Sims, Jim Lefebvre and Tony Taylor were tossed around, but in every instance general manager Jim Campbell thought the opposition was asking too much. Usually the asking price was two of the Tigers' three young left handed pitchers — Fred Scherman along with Canadians John Hiller and Mike Kilkenny. We know the Tigers need plenty of help to again be a strong contender in the American league but hope they don't have to sacrifice too much of their good young prospects. Kilkenny and Hiller with a couple of years experience under their belts look like they really belong in the big leagues and their presence in the Detroit line-up will certainly help attendance from Ontario. Giveaway Day Youngsters in the district will have the opportunity to take advantage of a giveaway day sponsored by the Lucan-Ilderton Jets Sunday aft ernoon, December 20. The Jets, defending OHA Intermediate "B" champs have a supply of 200 pucks with their name inscribed. They will be given away to the first 200 children attending the game with a parent. Fergus Thistles will be supplying the opposition on the ice. The Exeter Hawks continued their dominance in the Ontario Hockey Association Junior "D" western grouping with a pair of decisive wins over the past week. The Hawks trounced Lucan's fighting Irish 12-3 at the Exeter arena, Friday night and travelled to Belmont, Sunday and inflicted a 4.1 defeat on the Sunsets The game in Belmont was the Hawks eighth. game in a span of 15 days. They were in Lambeth last night, Wednesday to take on the Flyers and will be at home to the Belmont Sunsets Friday night at the Exeter arena and then travel to Mitchell for a Sunday contest. The local junior club now boasts a record of an even dozen wins, two ties and a single loss in 15 starts. Late Game Scoring All the scoring in the Belmont game Sunday was restricted to the last half of the game. Peter Kleinstiver opened the game scoring at 11.09 of the second period as he put the Hawks in front 1-0 only to have Ed Landon square things up for Belmont before the period came to a close. It was all Hawks in the final twenty minutes of play. Bob Rowe fired two goals in a row in a space of less than two minutes with Randy Preszcator picking up an assist on each goal. The final goal for the Hawks and the game came at 16.03 with Pete Glover turning the trick with the assist going to Larry Haugh. Landon 's only goal for Belmont came on a penalty shot late in the second period. The Hawks took 10 of the 16 penalties called. Score often Against Lucan, Friday night, the Hawks scored early and often in picking up the decisive victory. The league's top point getter Larry Haugh started things off with a goal at the 30 second mark before most of the fans had a chance to settle into their seats. In the next seven minutes the Hawks had four more goals and were well on the way to their eleventh victory of the season. Pete Glover scored twice in the short span with singles being fired by Randy Preszcator and Bob Rowe. During the last half of the opening session, Haugh scored his second of the night and line-mate Ron Lindenfield found the mark behind John McLean in the Lucan nets. Ron Janke, Joe O'Rourke and Jim Guenther each picked up two assists during the first period scoring splurge. Jim Macklem scored the only goal of the period for Lucan with less than two minutes to go on a three-way passing effort with Kevin McCarnan and Gord Hardy.
