Members of Lucan W.I.
participated in the Act Fact

Monday evening. As their main
interest at the present time is the
Sunshine Club this was
emphasized as the project for
which the money would be used.
Many members of this senior
citizen's club attended.
The weather was stormy and a
St. Marys group, which should
also have attended, were unable
to travel owing to the heavy
snowfall. The Lucan people were
asked to take their place, thereby
taping two programs instead of
one.
The Lions Club of Lucan
chartered a bus to take the people
to the T.V. Station which was
appreciated, especially when the
weather was so bad.
The W.I. president, Mrs.
Frances Saward gave the
commentaries and Mrs. M. H.
Hodgins and Mrs. W. C. Tupling
acted the charades. Mrs. Frank
Hardy and Mrs. Earl Young were
the winners of the draws.

The problems of farm income
will not be solved within the
context of free enterprise, a
mainly farm audience was told in
Lucan Monday night.
Donald C. MacDonald, MPP
for York South, and former
leader of the New Democratic
Party in Ontario spoke to over 80
people in the Legion Hall. He said
agriculture hasn't the strength to
compete in the market place.
He explainea that
governments have failed to
grapple with the problems faced
by agriculture by using such
terms as deficiency payments,
emergency floor prices and
"incentive incomes." Mr.
MacDonald said the latter item
was "lost" in the Farm Income
Committee Report.
MacDonald said there is a
place for farmers on the NDP
team. "This is a People's Party
and the Party of the 1970's."
He went on to say, "Our farm
policy will be shaped by farmers.
Once a policy is set, it's a
committment for the whole
party."
The former NDP leader also
said, "One of the best provincial
governments we have ever had
was in 1919 when the UFO
party was in power."
In addition to farm income
difficulties, Mr. MacDonald
outlined the implications of the
Ontario government's recent 25%
rebate of local property taxes to
farmers. He said the immediate
motivation was to "help the Tory
party on the eve of an election."
He emphasized that the
government's move "does
nothing to get at the basic
inequities in the tax structure
which the farmers have protested
for so long."
"There was a time when
farmers could elect a government,
and did," Mr. MacDonald said,
but he, warned that "that day has
gone," He asked his audience to
take a strong look at who is the
natural political ally of the
farmer. He maintained that it is
the trade unionist.
During a sharp question
period, one member of the
audience disagreed with Mr.
MacDonald's assessment that the
trade unionist was an ally of the
farmer, Instead the questioner
saw a bask division of interest
between the two groups, Mr.
— you will have to attend to find
out what it's all about.
